Family 13

Family 13 descends to the present through two daughters of Sir Ralph Milbanke's black Makeless mare: the SOREHEELS MARE (South's dam) and Gipsy, by King William's No-tongued Barb, although the descendants of Gipsy (branch 13-d) are much less numerous.

The SOREHEELS MARE has had an entry in GSB since the edition of 1791; her dam has been given consistently in all editions as "(the dam of Hartley's Blind Horse) by Makeless, out of Christopher Darcy's Royal Mare." Her breeder was identified as Capt. Hartley starting with the 1808 edition. In various eighteenth century pedigrees her dam was also referred to as "a Darcy Royal Mare" and, in one pedigree, as "Ld Darcy's Royall mare."

Gipsy does not have a broodmare entry in GSB. She was first mentioned in the 1793 edition in the pedigree of

DIANA, (Lord Leigh's,)
Bred by Mr HANGER, foaled in 1740, got by Second,* her dam, Mr Hanger's Brown Mare, by Stanyan's Arabian - Gipsy, by King William's No-tongued Barb - Makeless - Royal Mare.

* According to a letter from Mr Hanger himself to Lord Rockingham, Lord Leigh's Diana was one of three full sisters sired by Whitefoot; Bellina, a half-sister purchased by Lord Rockingham, was sired by Second.

For Mr Hanger's original letter, see Item WWM/R193/21 (Sheffield Archives). Although Charming Molly and Diana are generally thought to have been sired by Second, the available evidence indicates that their sire is more likely to have been Lord Leigh's Whitefoot, generally called Godolphin's Whitefoot.

Sir Ralph Milbanke's black mare by Makeless
Her entry in the current edition of GSB gives a pedigree that is probably incorrect, since contradicted by Lord Darcy, it should also include additional produce.

This mare was first mentioned in GSB in the edition of 1791, where she appears in the pedigree of Hartley's Blind Horse. His pedigree is given there as

Holderness Turk - Sir R Milbank's Black Mare, by Makeless - D'Arcy Royal Mare.

This entry was unchanged until the 5th edition of 1891, when Sir Ralph's mare was given her own broodmare entry. Her entry then read

MAKELESS MARE (black),
Sir RALPH MILBANKE'S famous mare, her dam, Darcy's Royal Mare, by Blunderbuss, out of Old Grey Royal, by The Darcy White Turk.
ch c Hartley's Blind Horse, by The Holderness Turk ... Captain Hartley
f by Soreheels ... Captain Hartley
* bl f Gipsy, by King William's No-tongued Barb ... Captain Hartley
*GIPSY bred a f by The Stanyan Arabian
This pedigree was given by Mr Leonard Hartley.
The American Sir Archie (by Diomed) descends from this mare.

Unfortunately, this pedigree is contradicted by two certificates written by Lord Darcy for Creeper appearing in Routh's records (C M Prior, Early Records of the Thoroughbred Horse, 1925; p 26, 36).

Creepr [1716 gr m] which I [Cuthbert Routh] bought of Ld. D’arcy, “was gott by Woodcock, her dam by ye D. of Rutland’s grey Arab, her grandam was the Old Royall Mare got by Blunderbush, half sistr to Sr R Milbank’s black mare, being both gott by Makeless. Blunderbush Royall’s dam was out of my Gray Royall, and gott by the White Turk.” / Wittness, J D’arcy.

CREEPR. A Gray mare, gott by Woodcock, Her dam by ye D. of Rutland’s Gray Arabian, her grandm was out of my Old Royall Mare, which was gott by Blundrbush, which mare was half sistr to the black Royal mare I sold to Sr Ralph Milbanke, gott by Makeless. Blundrbush Royall’s dam was out of my own Gray Royall, and gott by the White Turk. / Witness my hand, J Darcy.

Like many early pedigrees recorded before the formula became standardized, these certificates are confusingly written and a phrase seems to be missing in the first; they tell us that Creeper was got by Woodcock, her dam by the Duke of Rutland's Grey Arabian; her grandam a half sister to Sir Ralph Milbank's black mare, both being got by Makeless; Creeper's great grandam a Royal Mare, by Blunderbuss; her dam a mare by the White Turk, out of J Darcy's own Grey Royal Mare.

If Mr Hartley received a similar certificate, it is possible that he recorded an incorrect pedigree in his records which were, in turn, the source of the pedigree now given in GSB. Mr Hartley also wrote to Lord Rockingham in 1754 (WWM/R193/45; Sheffield Archives) regarding the pedigree of Countess. There he said

My Blind Horse was got by a Turk brought over from Constantenople by Sr [Rd] Sutton when he was Ambasador for Queen Ann out of Sr Ra: Milbankes black mare which he bought from Sedbury. She was got by Makeless her Dam by Old Royal.

The "Old Royal" mentioned here is most likely too early to have been the same as Old Royal (sire of Bald Charlotte) and should perhaps be regarded more as descriptive than as a proper name.

Pedigrees published in the 18th century of descendants of Sir Ralph's Makeless mare do not extend her pedigree beyond her dam. But it is apparent that the Makeless mare was highly regarded; she was frequently called "famous" and Thomas Panton wrote that she was "dam of several high formed racers."

Eighteenth century advertisements indicate that in addition to her produce in GSB, Sir Ralph's Makeless mare was also dam of Ragged Star, a brown horse by Mr Crofts Bay Barb, advertised as a stallion in 1728 and 1730; of the Duke of Wharton's, later the Earl of Drogheda's Othello, by Greyhound, raced at Newmarket 1720, 1721, 1723, then a stallion in Ireland before being returned to England; and of Young Sparks, a 1730 bay horse, bred by the Earl of Godolphin, got by old Sparks, and advertised as a stallion in 1741.

Blunderbuss Royal Mare
As noted above, this Royal Mare was most likely NOT the dam of Sir Ralph Milbanke's Makeless mare. Further, she was probably not Christopher Darcy's Royal Mare. However, after Mr Hartley's papers became available to GSB, she was given an entry in the 1891 edition, as were two of her granddaughters HOLDERNESS TURK MARE (1716) and SNAKE MARE (1723).

ROYAL MARE (Kitt Darcy's),
Bred by Lord DARCY, got by Blunderbuss, her dam, Old Grey Royal, by Darcy White Turk.

Little additional contemporary evidence, beyond that extracted from Mr Hartley's papers by the editor of GSB, has been found to support this construction. An advertisement for a son of the Blind Horse in 1736 (Newcastle Courant. 10 Apr 1736. Numb. 572) gives a pedigree with a mare by Blunderbuss, her dam by a "famous White Turk, then at Sedbury, belonging to the Darcy Family," but does not identify the Blunderbuss mare as Royal. And an advertisement for an Almanzor colt (Newcastle Courant. 5 Apr 1729. Numb. 206.) says only that his dam was by the Holderness Turk, her dam out of the dam of the "famous black Mare of Halnaby."

The other produce assigned by GSB to Kitt Darcy's ROYAL Mare by Blunderbuss is Sir J Jennings' filly by Hautboy, which appears in the GSB entry for TIFTER MARE.

TIFTER MARE,
Her dam by Snake - (Pooley's) Diamond - Hautboy - a mare Sir J Jennings had of old Kitt Darcy, by Blunderbuss.

However, eighteenth century evidence does not fully support this entry. The pedigree occurs in three variants, only one of which mentions Kitt Darcy and none of which includes a Blunderbuss cross.

Advertisements for Bashaw, alias old Standard, say he was got by Belgrade 2d; dam by Tifter; Snake; Pooley Diamond; old Hautboy, out of a mare that Sir Jonathan Jennings had from the late Lord Darcey's Stud, at Sedbury, Yorkshire, thought to be as high a bred Mare as any in England.

Advertisements for Tarquin say he was got by the Godolphin Arabian, his dam by the Scarborough Colt; Hip; Tifter; Snake; Diamond; Hautboy, out of a Mare which Sir John Jennings had of old Kitt Darcy, and valued much.

Other surviving evidence suggests that the Blunderbuss Royal Mare was dam of at least two additional produce

The Spectator Numb. CLVIII. / Thursday, August 30. 1711.
But tho' there is so little Care, as I have observed, taken, or Observation made of the natural Strain of Men, it is no small Comfort to me, as a SPECTATOR, that there is any right Value set upon the bona Indoles of other Animals; as appears by the following Advertisement handed about the County of Lincoln, and subscribed by Enos Thomas, a Person whom I have not the Honour to know, but suppose to be profoundly learned in Horse-flesh.
A Chesnut Horse called Cæsar, bred by James Darcey, Esq; at Sedbury near Richmond in the County of York; his Grandam was his old royal Mare, and got by Blunderbuss, which was got by Hemsly Turk, and he got by Mr Courand's Arabian, which got Mr Minshul's Jewstrump. Mr Cæsar sold him to a Nobleman (coming five Years old, when he had but one Sweat) for three hundred Guineas. A Guinea a Leap and Trial, and a Shilling the Man. / Enos Thomas.

This pedigree, is, once again, difficult to interpret, but seems to be saying that Caesar, a chesnut horse bred by James Darcy, Esq; at Sedbury was got by Mr Curwen's Arabian (sire of Jews Trump), his dam was by Blunderbuss, out of Darcy's old Royal Mare.

Cheny's print of Bald Charlotte, published 26 Sep 1741, says her sire "Old Royal: which was the son of a Blunderbuss Royal Mare, & the Holderness Turk."

Given the above evidence, the Blunderbuss Royal Mare is not linked to Christopher Darcy in eighteenth century documents. Further, her list of produce should probably be revised to show her as dam of

ch c Caesar, by Mr Curwen's Arabian (sire of Jews Trump) … James Darcy, Esq;
c old Royal (sire of Bald Charlotte) by the Holderness Turk …
f by the Duke of Rutland's Grey Arabian (dam, in 1716, of Mr Routh's Creeper, by Woodcock) …
f by the Duke of Rutland's Black Barb (dam of 2 mares owned by Mr Hartley) ...

Although Blunderbuss was described by Sir Marmaduke Wyvill as "one of the most noted stallions of his Time, and to this day his blood is as much valued as any in England," he is now found in only two other contexts. Mr Hutton's Hen Mare (Fen Mare in GSB) by the Royal Colt had as her dam a mare by Blunderbuss, out of the Old Thornton Mare, by Mr Place's White Barb (or Turk). The other occurs in an advertisement for Mazard alias Roger from the Universal Advertiser (Dublin) of 30 Apr 1754. This horse was bred by Sir Marmaduke Wyvill and his pedigree in the advertisement was certified by Sir Marmaduke as got by his Belgrade the 2d; old Tifter; Ld Darcy's Woodcock; Ld Darcy's Chesnut Arabian; Blunderbuss, "out of a natural Barb mare, which was dam to the famous Makeless." Reference to Lord Rockingham's records (WWM/R193/49; Sheffield Archives; from Brown's copy of Sir M: Wyvill's Stud Book) indicates that the natural Barb Mare was actually grandam of Makeless.

Makeless - was got by Gene...l Oglethorpe's Arabian his dam by Ld D'Arcy's Y...llow Turk - & out of a Natural Barb Mare - which Sr Jno Lawson (a Sea Admiral) bought from Barbary & gave her to King Charles - who gave her to Ld d'Arcy.

This, incidentally, gives us an apt example of a Royal Mare, that is, one formerly owned by the monarch.
Christopher Darcy's Royal Mare
As discussed above, there is no clear evidence for the pedigree of this mare. Lord Darcy said only that the dam of Sir Ralph Milbanke's black Makeless mare was NOT the Blunderbuss Royal Mare (dam by the White Turk, out of his own Grey Royal). In pedigrees of her descendants the dam of Sir Ralph's Makeless mare is variously referred to as "a Royal Mare," "Mr Darcy's Royal Mare," and once as Lord Darcy's (implying the pedigree was written down no earlier than 1721, when James Darcy the younger became Lord Darcy of Navan). She was also described by Thomas Panton as "a Royal Mare, esteemed the best bred Mare in England" (Whitehall Evening Post. 30 Dec [1760]-1 Jan 1761. No. 2308.; advertisement for Matchless). After 1755, pedigrees of Danby Cade and South specified Christopher Darcy's Royal Mare, Christopher (or Kit) having been a younger brother of James's. And in 1769, a pedigree provided by the Duke of Ancaster for Pagan, a great grandson of Gipsy, also specified "Christopher Darcey's Royal Mare." Since mitochondrial DNA testing to date indicates that most family 11 and 13 share the same haplotype, it is reassuring that family 11 is also linked by pedigree records to a mare of Christopher Darcy's.

A confusing pedigree in the Dutton records (Gloucestershire Record Office, D678/1 F14/5/6) also mentions in passing the "Dam of Sr Ralph Milbanks famous Black mare."

This pedigree appears to represent the same maternal line as GSB's MERLIN MARE (dam, in 1783, of Meteor, by Eclipse) which is now given (after going through several revisions in earlier editions) as

MERLIN MARE,
Bred by Lord CHEDWORTH, in 1765, her dam, Mother Pratt, by Marksman - Mixbury - Bald Galloway - King William's Black Barb - Lord Darcy Black-legged Royal Mare.

There is a Darcy Blacklegs Royal Mare mentioned in the Duke of Newcastle's records. However, she appears to have been the ancestress of family 7, which does not have the same mtDNA haplotype as families 11 and 13. If the Dutton pedigree is accurate, perhaps the explanation is that there was another Blacklegs Royal Mare belonging to Christopher Darcy, derived from a different matrilineage. And possibly Blacklegs (the sire) was the horse Mr Hartley called "Old Royal" in his letter to Lord Rockingham. Given the short pedigrees in the very earliest records, however, misinterpretation must also remain a possibility.

Current mtDNA testing results also indicate that family 4 shares the same type as do families 11 and 13; however, there is presently no known overlap in pedigrees between families 4 and 11 or 13, suggesting that the common matrilineal ancestor predates historical records.
