Family 1-o. Bred in Kentucky by J G Boswell, she was owned by Major Barak G Thomas of Lexington, who he thought so highly of her that he named his Dixiana Farm for her. "One of the most noted pre-Civil War matrons in Kentucky," she was the dam of Florac (dam of the Kentucky Oaks winner Florimore, Herzog, Fireball, Aureola, War Jig, and War Reel by War Dance. Horses tracing tail-female to Dixie include Samuel Riddle's champion Friar's Carse (ch f 1923 Friar Rock), Belmont Stakes winner Hail To All (b c 1962 Hail to Reason), Barbs Delight (b c 1964 Bagdad), Timmy Lad (b c 1961 Tim Tam), Sword Dancer and War Relic. Other champions tracing to Dixie are Level Best (ch f 1938 Equipoise), Storm Song (b f 1994 Summer Squall), Silver Cloud (ch f 1964 Dan Cupid), Roving Boy (b c 1980 Olden Times), White Skies (ch c 1949 Sun Again) and Rockhill Native (ch g 1977 Our Native). Dixie belongs to the Penelope branch of Family 1 that traces to Tregonwell's Natural Barb Mare. She died March 9, 1883.

Horse of the Year in 1959, he won the Mayflower Stakes, the Belmont Stakes, the Jockey Club Gold Cup, the Metropolitan Handicap, the Monmouth Handicap, the Woodward Stakes twice, the Travers Stakes, the Suburban Handicap, the Grey Lag Handicap, and finished second for the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness Stakes. He sired Damascus (b c 1964) to help keep the Bend Or sire line, via Teddy (b c 1915 Ajax), alive. War Relic (USA) ch c 1938 (Man o' War - Friar's Carse, by Friar Rock). Sire Line Matchem. Family 1-o. Bred by Samuel D Riddle, he won the Massachusetts Handicap, the Narragansett Special, the Governor's Handicap and the Kenner Stakes. He sired Relic (ch c 1945), influential in Europe, and Intent (ch c 1948), both of whom were significant in perpetuating the Matchem sire line via Man o' War. War Relic died in 1963.
