Mufti b c 1783 (Fitzherod - Mare, by Infant). Sire Line Herod. Family 7.

Bred by Lord Mann of Norwich, Mufti raced in the colours of the Prince of Wales (later King George IV) prior to his sale for 230gs to Richard Vernon in 1786. He subsequently ran for the Duke of Bedford for several years and retired to the Duke's Woburn Stud in Bedfordshire before export to America. In England he got Marianne (ch f 1798) dam of the Derby winner Octavius (br c 1809 Orville) and the Oaks winner Caroline (b f 1817 Whalebone). Sister to Marianne (b f 1797) was the ancestress of Cambridgeshire Stakes winner Bathilde (ch f 1858 Stockwell) who founded a highly successful family in central and eastern Europe.

Imported by Colonel John Tayloe of Virginia in 1799, Mufti stood in several Virginia counties, including three years at Tayloe's Mount Airy stud in Richmond. His stud career there was undistinguished in spite of opportunities, including a mating with the dam of Sir Archy (b c 1805 Diomed). His best son was Trafalgar (ch c 1804), a good racehorse and later an esteemed sire. To his credit his daughter Elephanta (b f 1808) founded a Kentucky racing family that culminated in the sire Judge Leonard (b c 1865 Zero). Considered the most beautiful horse in England according to John Tayloe, his good looks made him popular as a sire of saddle horses in his adopted country.
