Perdita
b f 1881 (Hampton - Hermione, by Young Melbourne). Sire Line
Camel.
Family 7-f. Perdita was bred
by John Frederick Vaughan Campbell (1817-1898), 2nd Earl Cawdor, and purchased for the Prince of Wales,
later King Edward VII, by trainer John
Porter. According to Mr Fitzgerald, Porter described Perdita as
"an angular sort of mare, but I could see that she had good points,
and was likely to develop into a nice broodmare". She stood 15.1
hands and was a half-sister to Dorothy Draggletail. Ulbrich notes she
apparently was "nothing like her sire and clearly favoured the
Melbourne
strain".
She raced from two to five years, winning seven races. In the stud her outstanding offspring were the full brothers Diamond
Jubilee, Persimmon, and Florizel, all sired by St Simon. Another son, Sandringham (br c 1896 St Simon), never raced and
went to America.
Perdita belongs to the Hermione branch of Family Number 7, tracing to the
Blacklegs Royal Mare. She died in 1899.
