Alice Hawthorn b f 1838 (Muley Moloch - Rebecca, by Lottery). Sire Line Beningbrough. Family 4-f.

Bred in North Yorkshire by Mr J Plummer, Alice Hawthorn was half-sister to the useful stallions Annandale (br c 1842 Touchstone) and The Provost (br c 1836 The Saddler), and to Fair Helen (ch f 1843 Pantaloon), the taproot mare of Family 4-e. Running for Mr Plummer and after 1843 for G Salvin, Esq, she won more than fifty races and £8000 including the Chester Cup, Cheshire Stakes, Goodwood Cup, Doncaster Cup (twice) and the Richmond Cup. During her five seasons on the turf she also won many additional Cups and Royal Plates.

In the stud she bred six winners from ten foals. Among her offspring were the great Thormanby (ch c 1857 Windhound) who won the Derby Stakes and was Champion Sire in 1869, the Ascot Gold Vase winner Findon (b c 1853 Touchstone) and Sweet Hawthorne (br f 1858 Sweetmeat), the taproot of Family 4-k. Other of her distinguished descendants include the good French stallion Le Sancy (gr c 1884 Atlantic) and the Irish Derby winner and Champion Sire Ben Battle (bbr c 1871 Rataplan). Alice Hawthorn heads her own branch of Family 4-f, tracing to the Layton Violet Barb Mare. She died in 1861.

In 1841 she finished 4th for the All-Aged Stakes at York October, won by Mr Gascoigne's Jack Sheppard (br c 1838 Voltaire), with Lord Zetland's Tamburini (b c 1836 Rubini) placing 2nd, Mr S King's Cattonian (b c 1838 Muley Moloch) 3rd, beating 2 others. Won a £50 plate at Northallerton, beating Mr Hutchinson's Maria Monk (ch f 1837 Revolution) "in a canter," and 2 others. Won a £50 Cup at the same meeting, beating Captain Harcourt's Arnagill (b c 1838 Muley Moloch), Tamburini, Maria Monk and 2 others.

In 1842 she won the £745 Cup at Chester, beating Mr Kirby's Lanercost (br c 1835 Liverpool) by "2 lengths," Mr Holmes's Vulcan (b c 1837 Verulam) and 20 others, including the St Leger winner Satirist (br c 1838 Pantaloon), the Cesarewitch and Chester Cup winner Cruiskeen (ch f 1834 Sir Hercules) and Retriever (ch c 1836 Recovery). Won the £230 Free Handicap at the same meeting, beating Mr Ferguson's Humming Bird (b c 1837 Skylark) and 2 others. Won the £225 Cheshire Stakes at the same meeting, beating Lord Eglinton's Bellona (b f 1835 Beagle), Miss Kitty Cockle (b f 1834 Cadland) and Cruiskeen. Finished 3rd for the Cup at Manchester, won by Mr Buckley's David (b c 1839 Physician), with Mr Bower's Collina (b f 1838 Langar) placing 2nd, beating 2 others. Won the Queen's Plate at York in August, beating Mr Allen's Margaret (b f 1836 Margrave) "in a canter," Mr Kitching's Priscilla Tomboy (br f 1839 Tomboy) and 1 other. Went unplaced for the Suffolk Stakes at Newmarket Second Spring, won by Mr George Payne's Queen Mab (b f 1839 Muley Moloch), with Sir J Hawley's The Bishop of Romford's Cob (b c 1840 Jereed) placing 2nd, the Duke of Bedford's good winner Prologue (br c 1842 Camel) 3rd; 13 started. Finished 3rd for the Emperor of Russia'a Plate at Ascot, won by Lord Albemarle's Ascot Gold Cup winner The Emperor (ch c 1841 Defence), with Foig-a-Ballagh placing 2nd by "2 lengths," beating Lord George Bentinck's Cowl (b c 1842 Bay Middleton), the latter going lame at the final turn.
