Hawthorn was half-sister to the useful stallions
Annandale (br c 1842 Touchstone) and The Provost (br c
1836 The Saddler), and to Fair Helen (ch f 1843
Pantaloon), the taproot mare of
Family
4-e. Running for Mr Plummer and after 1843 for G Salvin, Esq, she won more than fifty races and £8000
including the Chester Cup, Cheshire Stakes, Goodwood
Cup, Doncaster Cup (twice) and the Richmond Cup.
During her five seasons on the turf she also won
many additional Cups and Royal
Plates.
In the stud she bred six winners from ten foals.
Among her offspring were the great
Thormanby
(ch c 1857 Windhound) who won the Derby Stakes and was
Champion Sire in 1869, the Ascot Gold Vase winner Findon
(b c 1853 Touchstone)
and Sweet Hawthorne (br f 1858 Sweetmeat), the taproot of
Family
4-k. Other of
her distinguished descendants include the good French
stallion Le Sancy
(gr c 1884 Atlantic)
and the Irish Derby winner and Champion Sire Ben Battle
(bbr c 1871 Rataplan). Alice
Hawthorn heads her own branch of
Family
4-f,
tracing to the Layton Violet Barb Mare. She
died in 1861.
