Longbow
b c 1849 (Ithuriel - Miss Bowe, by
Catton). Sire
Line Camel. Family
21. Bred at
Knowsley by Edward Smith Stanley (1775-1851), the
13th Earl of Derby, Longbow was full brother to
the Oaks winner Iris (ch f 1848). His career was
managed by Edward Geoffrey Smith Stanley
(1779-1869), the 14th Earl. He was described as
having Catton's head and a superiority for running
over the distance of a mile. He was also a roarer,
which affliction his trainer, John Scott, was said
to have treated with lime water. A turf writer
noted that it "was difficult to handicap
Longbow out of any race".
In the stud his
most notable offspring included the Oaks winner
Feu de Joie (ch f 1859), the One Thousand Guineas
winner Sagitta (b f 1857), Mrs. Quickly (b f
1857), the taproot mare of Family
22-c, and the stallion Toxophilite (b c 1855).
Through the latter stallion Longbow was grandsire of the Duke of Portland's great
New Zealand-bred Carbine (b c 1885 Musket).
Longbow died in 1864.
