Woful b c 1809
(Waxy -
Penelope,
by Trumpator).
Sire Line Pot8os.
Family 1-o. Bred at Euston by
Augustus Fitzroy (1735-1822), 3rd Duke of Grafton, the
owner of his sire and the breeder of his dam, Woful
was a full brother to the Derby winners
Whalebone
(br c 1807 Waxy) and
Whisker (b c 1812
Waxy).
The fourth son of the remarkable
Penelope,
he was said to resemble her in all respects, especially
her excellent shoulders, except that he was much larger.
He won twelve races
in all, counting the forfeits paid to him. He didn't
start for either the Derby or the St Leger although
he defeated some horses who had been among the Derby
field, which was won that year by Octavius (br c 1809
Orville). He broke
down running against Lord Foley's Teasdale (br c 1807
Mr Teazle) and was retired to the stud.
Although his stud
career cannot be compared to his brothers,
Whalebone
and Whisker, he had considerable
success, certainly more than the Derby winner, getting
the winners of five classics races: the One Thousand
Guineas winner Arab (br f 1824), the Oaks winner Augusta
(b f 1818), the St Leger winner
Theodore (b c 1819),
and Zinc (br f 1820), winner of both the One Thousand
Guineas and Oaks Stakes. In all, fifty-eight of his
offspring won £33,589. Woful was sold for 510
guineas and sent to Prussia in the autumn of 1832.
