A Comparative List

Racehorses (& breeding given elsewhere) From the list of Michaelmas, 1731

  1.  ____ light grey mare; got by Mixbury & bought of Mr Thornton

  2.  ____ grey mare (blind of an Eye); got by Woodcock, & bred by Ld Darcy, bought of Mr Thornton

  3.  [1717] light grey mare called Molly, bred by Sir Michael Warton [& raced by him at York, 14 Aug 1723]; got by a Son of the Old Bay Barb, & out of the Old gray Mare that was Creeping Molly's dam

1717 roan mare, Betty Garnet

1720 black gelding, Bald Jack; probably acquired from Mr Hotham

1721 bay mare, Proserpine 4.  [1721] bay mare called Proserpine; bred by Sir Michael Warton [& raced by Sir Michael Newton in 1726 & 1727]; got by Tifter, & out of the Old [Scorfield] Mare

1721chesnut mare, Tripping Nan

  5.  ____ grey mare, called Commoner; bred by Sir Michael Warton; got by a Son of the Old Bay Barb, & out of a [Commoner] Mare, that was out of the Old [Scorfield] Mare

  6.  ____ roan mare, bred by Sir Michael Warton; got by a Son of the Old Bay Barb, & out of a bay Lusty Mare

  6a.  ____ her full sister [not listed in the Stud in 1731, but had at least 1 foal for Sir Michael Newton]

NOTE: One of these mares may have been the [1717] roan mare, Betty Garnet, raced by Mr Newton at York in 1723 (the same race in which Sir Michael Warton's Molly also was an entry); since the broodmares with known ages appear to be listed in order from oldest to youngest, I guess that the full sister [gone by 1731] was Betty Garnet

1722 chesnut horse, A(y)scough
GSB: gives breeding as by Black-a-top, dam by Acaster Turk

  7.  ____ dark grey mare called "the Foreign Mare"; gott by the Cyprus Arabian & bred by Mr Pelham

NOTE: A mare that was bred to the Lonsdale Bay Arabian (dam of 1740 b f Mr Ann's Sparkler, later Ld Byron's Maidenhead): her pedigree was given as by the Rutland Cyprus Arabian, out of a mare by a Foreign Horse of Charles Pelham's Esq; of Lincolnshire Sir Michael's "Foreign Mare" looks like a sister (or possibly the same as) the mare bred to Ld Lonsdale's Bay Arabian

1726 chesnut mare, Bridget;

Sir Michael Newton's Filly, out of a Barb M & Thornton's Arabian

NOTE: the full "Sister to Whitefoot" may have Bowes (or a now unknown sister), by Hutton's Grey Barb - Byerly Turk Mare, her dam by The Selaby Turk, grandam by Hautboy, out of sister to Morgan's Dun, by a son of Helmsley Turk - Dodsworth - Burton Barb.
