Traveller [Young
Traveller] b c 1785 (Highflyer
- Sister to Proserpine, by Henricus). Sire Line
Highflyer.
Family 11. Traveller was bred by
the noted breeder John
Hutchinson, of Shipton, near York, who stood King
Fergus (ch c 1775 Eclipse) after his
return from Ireland in 1785. Mr Hutchinson also bred the St Leger
winners Beningbrough (b c 1791
King
Fergus), Hambletonian (b c 1792
King
Fergus) and Young Traveller (ch c 1788 King
Fergus).
Traveller was purchased by His
Royal Highness the Prince of Wales, later King George IV, prior to his
last race as a four year old. The Prince had also owned the Derby winner
Sir Thomas (ch c 1785 Pontac) and was the breeder of
Escape
(b c 1785 Highflyer) and
Whiskey
(b c 1798 Saltram).
Traveller immediately won a 500
guineas match against Grey Diomed (gr c 1785
Diomed)
for the Prince, however, in the next three years he appeared unable to
regain his four year old form. He retired from the turf as a seven year
old. Despite his interesting pedigree, which included crosses to
Blank
(b c 1740 Godolphin Arabian) and his
sister, and to Regulus (b c 1739
Godolphin
Arabian) and his sister, Traveller made no mark on the stud book. He
was shot in 1813.
