Sultan at said Place, at one Guinea, and half a Crown. The Chidworth Dormouse at Golden Bridge, at three Guineas, and half a Crown. The Universal Advertiser (Dublin), April 3 to April 7, 1759, number 672, says - "The Stallions belonging to Messrs. The Oxford Journal, Saturday, April 6, 1776, says - "To Cover this Season, At Dailsford, at one Guinea a Mare and One Shilling the Servant, - The Grey Horse Young Bustard, bred by James Lenox Dutton, Esq; now the Property of Samuel Dadge; got by old Bustard, his Dam by Regulus. Young Bustard is a Grandson of Lord Godolphin's Arabian, and a great great Grandson of Flying Childers : His Stock are well known to be remarkable good Hunters and Road Horses; and is a very certain Foal-getter. - Good Grass for Mares, and proper Care taken of them. - Dailsford is five Miles from Chipping-Norton, and three from Stow-on-the-Wold".
The Oxford Journal, Saturday, April 1, 1780, says - "To Cover this present Season, At Mr. Samuel Dadge's, at Dailsford, at One Guinea a Mare, and One Shilling the Man, The Well-known Grey Horse Young Bustard, whose Pedigree is attested by Thomas Saint John, late Stud-Groom to the late James Lenox Dutton, Esq. of Sherborn, Gloucestershire. - Young Bustard's Pedigree is as follows : 'He was got by the famous Old Bustard, which was got by Old Crab, out of Slammerkin, which was got by Firetail, a Son of Old Childers; this Horse's Dam by the well-known and capital Horse, called Regulus, and his Grandam by the famous Old Partner'. This is a true Pedigree, attested by me Samuel Dadge, of Dailsford, three Miles from the Stow-on-the-Wold, five from Chipping-Norton, and seven from Burford".
These two pedigrees are in error. Young Bustard was not a great great grandson of Flying Childers. The dam of Old Bustard, Miss Slamerkin (1729), bred a filly by Firetail (1729), a son of Childers.
Pue's Occurrences, Tuesday, March 28, 1758, says - "The Stallions belonging to Messrs Sims and Heney are to cover Mares this Season at the following Places. viz. Young Bustard, a most promising Colt, at said Place, at one Guinea and a half each Mare. Forrester at Nenagh, at one Guinea each Mare. Good Grass for Mares, and a British Half Crown to be paid the Groom for each Mare covered by any of the above Horses N. B. It is by particular Desire of several of the principal Gentlemen of this Kingdom that the said Sims and Heney have alter'd their Intentions of lending Bustard to England this Season".
Young Bustard in the above advertisement is most probably Mr Dutton's Bustard in the next advertisement:
The Oxford Journal, Saturday, April 18, 1795, says - "To Cover This Season, at Middle Aston, Oxfordshire, Price Two Guineas each, and Five Shillings the Groom, Hotspur, Got by Northumberland, Son of Old Cade; and Young Bustard, Got by Mr. Dutton's Bustard. The Dam of these two Horses was got by Coatsworth's Son of Old Traveller; Grandam by the Cullen Arabian; Great Grandam by Blaze, Son of the Devonshire Childers, out of Mr. Greswood's Old-Partner Mare Lady Thigh. N. B. These Horses are both perfectly sound, healthy, strong, temperate, and remarkably good Hunters".
James Lenox Naper, of Loughcrew, co. Meath was the eldest son of James Naper, of Loughcrew, and his third wife Anne, daughter of Sir Ralph Dutton, first baronet, of Sherborne, Gloucestershire. He assumed the name of Dutton in 1743 in compliance with the will of his maternal uncle Sir John Dutton, second baronet.

Welsh Ponies and Cobs, by Wynne Davies, 1980, page 288, from a stud card for Railway Comet for 1874, says - "Railway Comet is out of a splendid Mare by Old Railway ; Old Railway was allowed to be one of the best Horses and Trotters in England in his time ; Old Railway by Hibernia ; Hibernia by the Duke of Grafton's Symmetry, dam by Whalebone ; Old Railway's dam by Fitzorvil".
Ponies and All About Them, by Frank Townend Barton, 1917, page 188, says - "Besides the small native ponies, there are the Welsh cobs that have been famous for certainly more than a century, as shown by some of Mr Coltman Roger's interesting genealogy tables in vol. IV. of the Welsh Pony Stud Book - as, for instance, a line from recent times - of a cob tracing directly through Old Express by Trotting Railway by Old Railway by Hibernia, a very fast trotter, owned by a Mr Evan Davies, of Hafod Farm, Llanwrda, Carmarthenshire, and got by the Duke of Grafton's Symmetry, presumably the son of Young Marske out of a Herod mare".
Whalebone's first foals were in 1816. If a filly from this crop was covered as a two year old in 1818 by the Symmetry foaled in 1789, then he would have been 29. He could have continued covering into his 30s but it is also possible that the Duke of Grafton's Symmetry was a son of Symmetry by Young Marske.
The Silurian, Cardiff, Merthyr, and Brecon Mercury, and South Wales General Advertiser, Saturday, April 12, 1851, says - "1851. To Cover this Season. Railway is a rich brown, stands 16 hands high ; for substance, symmetry, and action, cannot be excelled by any half-bred Horse in this Country. All persons wishing to breed good goers, should embrace this opportunity. Railway was got by Hibernia, allowed to be one of the best hunters and best trotters in England ; he was got by the Duke of Grafton's Symmetry, Dam by Whalebone. Railway's Dam was got by Fitzorville, a celebrated trotter ; Grand dam by Percifield, &c. A further pedigree would be needless as a sight of him will suffice. Railway shall trot and get the greatest number of Mares in Foal, against any Stallion that travels against him for 50 Sovereigns. The Premium was awarded to him by the Glamorgan Agricultural Society, in 1848, for the best Stallion for Hunting and Coach purposes. He will attend at Brecon, on Saturday the 12th inst., and every Saturday fortnight ; at Hereford, every other Saturday ; at Abergavenny, every other Tuesday ; at Kington, every other Wednesday ; and, at Hay, every other Thursday. All Mares tried by him and covered afterwards by another will be charged for".
