Pick's Turf Register, volume 1, page 15, says - "Squirrel was got by Mr. Lister's Snake; his dam by the Acaster Turk, (sire of Chaunter, and the dam of Roxana); grandam by a son of the Pulleine Arabian, out of a daughter of Brimmer".

The GSB, volume 1, 5th edition, page 381, says - "Harlequin, Mr Metcalf's, under 13 hds. 3 in., 1719, by Curwen Mixbury - son of the Pulleine Rockwood - Brimmer - Darcy Royal Mare".

The Racing Calendar for 1744, by John Cheny, in the index, page xviii, says - "Metcalf Harlequin Son of Mixberry, Son of the Curwen Bay Barb. Harlequin's Dam was got by a Son of the Pulleyne Rockwood. His Grand Dam was out of a Darcy Royal Mare and Brimmer, Son of the Darcy Yellow Turk".

Early Records of the Thoroughbred Horse, by C M Prior, page 37, in Cuthbert Routh's Stud-Book, says - "Simon. Leapd at Cathrick, 5 years old, 1738. ROCKWOOD

CARLISLE GELDING

Pick's Turf Register, volume 1, page 9, says - "Buckhunter [Carlisle Gelding] was got by that noted Stallion the Bald Galloway; his dam called the Wharton Mare, by Lord Carlisle's Turk, out of a daughter of the said Bald Galloway, which was out of a Byerley Turk Mare". This is confirmed by the GSB, volume 1, 5th edition, page 18, where it is noted that the second cross of the Bald Galloway is - "probably incorrect, but it is given in all the pedigrees".

An Introduction to a General Stud-book, page 168, says - "Carlisle Gelding - Ld. Carlisle, 1713, Bald Galloway - Carlisle Turk - Byerley Turk".

An advertisement from Issue V of the Racing Calendar Periodical, June 5, 1776, says - "Stallions / To Cover in 1776. A Large Strong Bay Colt, 4 yrs old, this grass, upwards of 15 hands high, bred by the Earl Ferrers, and got by Sir C Sedley`s Arabian, sire of Coquette, Greyling, Pudenda, &c &c. His dam was got by Regulus, and is the dam of Sir H Harpur`s colt Drowsy; his grandam by Old Traveller, his gr. grandam by Almanza, son of the Darley Arabian, who was sire also of the D of Devonshire`s Flying Childers; his gr. gr. grandam was own sister to the famous Carlisle gelding, both being got by the Bald Galloway; their dam, who was called the Wharton Mare, and who won three Royal Plates and the Subscription-money at Quenton Meadows in one year, was got by the Carlisle Turk, out of a daughter of the Byerly Turk. N B The colt was lamed in his fore-leg when a foal, which is now a blemish, but he goes perfectly sound.--A bred mare that has won a 50 l plate, or a mare that has bred a son or daughter which has won two 50 l plates, may be covered gratis.--Good grass for mares, and proper care taken.--The money to be paid before the mares are taken away".

The Sportsman's Pocket Companion, a collection of forty engravings drawn by James Roberts and engraved by Henry Roberts, published around 1760, number 11, says - "The Portraiture of Buckhunter or the Carlisle Gelding This Gelding tho' in very high Form for Running there were Horses that could beat him; but in many particulars there were scarce his equal, never his Superior; that could Run with all degrees of Weight, Support frequent Heats Travelling Running often; the whole continued for such a Series of Years, he was bred by the Earl of Carlisle and got by ye Bald Galloway Sire of Old Cartouch, Roxana, & many Eminent Horses he was bred by Capt Rider in Whittleberry Forest his Dam was a Royal Mare of Capt Rider's of the Whynot Kind; his Sire was ye St Victor Barb. Carlisles Dam was got by a Turk of the said Earl's, his Grand Dam was a Daughter of ye Byerly Turk".

The Racing Calendar for 1743, by John Cheny, in the index, page ix, says - "The Byerley Turk got the Duke of Rutland's Black Hearty (which was the Sire of Bonny Black and Peterborough Dun) Basto, Grasshopper, Jig, the Sire of the Dam of the Duke of Bolton's Looby, and the Sire of the Dam of Mr Hutton's Phantom. He got the Dams of Lord Hallifax's Farmer Mare, Grey Ramsden, Sir Wat Williams-Wynn's Looby, and Smales's Childers ; the Grand-Dam of the Carlisle Gelding, of Col. Howard's Squirrel, and his Chesnut Mare that won the King's Hundred Guineas at Newmarket in April 1728".

Weatherby's Racing Calendar for 1790, Advertisements of Stallions, 1791, page 391, says - "Young Highflyer was got by Highflyer, he is own brother to the famous Maid of all Work, Cowslip, Miss Blanchard, &c. &c. His dam is own sister to that celebrated racer, Tandem, got by Syphon ; his grand dam by Regulus, his great grand dam by Snip, his great great grand dam by Cottingham, son of Hartley's Blind Horse ; his great great great grand dam called the Warlock Galloway, and was the dam of Mr. Routh's Cub, and Black Eyes, and grand dam of Judgement and Apollo, by Lister's Snake, a daughter of the Bald Galloway, a daughter of the Carlisle Turk, sire of the Carlisle gelding's dam, and out of a daughter of the Pulleine old Arabian, &c".

The Reading Mercury, Monday, January 16, 1792, page 4, says - "Young Highflyer, Will Cover Mares at the same place [Maidenhead, Berks] at Three Guineas and a Crown ; he is a sure foal getter, - his stock is very promising, being full of bone, and handsome, some of which may be seen as above. Young Highflyer was got by Highflyer, and is own brother to Maid of All Work, his dam is own sister to that celebrated well-bred racer Tandem, which is sire of his Royal Highness the Prince of Wales's Creeper, and several other speedy runners, which have lately appeared on the turf; Tandem was got by Syphon, dam by Regulus, grand dam by Snip, great grand dam by Cottingham, son of Hartley's Blind Horse, great great grand dam, called the Warlock Galloway, and was the dam of Mr. Routh's Cub and Black Eyes, and grand dam of Judgment and Apollo, by the Lister Snake, a daughter of the Bald Galloway, a daughter of the Carlisle Turk, sire of the Carlisle Gelding's dam, and out of a daughter of the Pulleine Old Arabian. Young Highflyer is very like his sire, who now covers at fifty guineas a mare, but is much larger, with a deal more power; he is upwards of 16 hands high, justly proportioned, short legged and full of bone, and is without doubt, a most promising son of Highflyer to get racers ; he is also calculated to get capital hunters, &c. &c. N. B. Proper care and due attention will be paid to mares : there are good grass paddocks provided, and plenty of hay, corn, &c".

Pond's Sporting Kalendar for 1757, page 172, says - "Judgment, Mr. Swinbourne's, was got by Snip; his Dam by Collingham [sic], (Son of the blind Horse) his Grandam by Spark [error for Snake], out of a Daughter of the Bald Galloway, his Great Grandam by Lord Carlisle's Turk, his Great Great Grandam by Pullen's white Turk. The Daughter of the Bald Galloway [error for Snake] was the Dam of Abigail, Cub and Black Eyes".

An Introduction to a General Stud-book, page 80, says - "Miss Cape, Bred by Mr. Stanhope, foaled in 1758, got by Regulus, her dam, Routh's Black-eyes, by Crab, out of the Warlock Galloway, by Snake - Bald Galloway - Ld Carlisle's Turk - Old Hautboy".

The Chester Courant, Tuesday, April 10, 1798, page 4, says - "To Cover, This Season, At Beeston-Hall, near Tarporley, Regulus, At Two Guineas each mare, and a Crown the groom. Regulus was got by Young Morwick, his dam by Turk (the dam of Citizen and Freeman) grandam Fairy Queen by Young Cade, great grandam Mr. Routh's Black Eyes by Crab, out of the Warlock Galloway by Snake, Bald Galloway, Lord Carlisle's Turk, Old Hautboy. For Regulus's performances on the turf, see the Racing Calenders for 1791, 1792, 1793, and 1794".

CARLISLE WHITE TURK

In The Royal Studs of the Sixteenth and Seventeenth Centuries, by C M Prior, page 137, in the list of mares belonging to Edward Coke, there is the following entry:

"Mare called Roxana was got By ye Bald galloway, Her dam by Ld Carlisle's white Turk. Her gr dam was Sir Willm Strickland's Old Blunder mare".

The pedigree of Roxana in the GSB, volume 1, 5th edition, page 1, reads by Bald Galloway out of sister to Chanter, bred by Sir W Strickland, by Akaster Turk, her dam by Leedes Arabian, grandam by Spanker, out of Old Morocco Mare, the dam of Spanker. This is confirmed by Pick's Turf Register, volume 1, page 58 where Akaster is spelled Acaster.

Heber's Racing Calendar, volume X, for the year 1760, page 150, says - "Bever's Driver, Son of Snake, the best bred Son of the Lister Turk, out of Thwait's excellent Dun Mare, got by the Yorkshire Acaster Turk, the sire of Old Chanter".

In some pedigrees Acaster Turk is incorrectly spelled Ancaster Turk, fuelling the speculation that this horse was Alcock's Arabian, a stallion employed by the 2nd Duke of Ancaster. In fact Acaster is an area in Yorkshire just south of York containing the villages of Acaster Malbis and Acaster Selby.

PULLEINE'S WHITE TURK

The following texts, parts of two letters from Thomas Pulleine to John Holles, Duke of Newcastle, are taken from Prior's Early Records of the Thoroughbred Horse, pages 125 and 126:

"[1706. 8br 24, Bolton.] I will next weeke send 3 [mares] for yor Graces app[ro]bation not inferior in blood & beautye to the best of Sr W: [Ramsden] & exceeds her much in size & strength theire pedigree shall come wth them 2 of them are 5 yr old next spring & I hope wth foale to a son of Byerley thother is 6 - wth foale I beleive to my Arabian for she was gott by my white Turke yts deade".

"1706, 28th [October], Bolton. The pedigree of the maires I send for yor Grace to have the refuseall off is as follows
The Lame philly's dam was gott by Mr Place white Turke & vnder a ffenwicke maire & her sire is my Chessnutt Arabian [in foal to a son of Byerley's Turk].
thother 4 yr old philly's dam was out of Sr Mathew Peirson Running maire wch was the most famouse maire in my time & gott by Mr Place Turke & the philly's sire my Chessnutt Arab [in foal to a son of Byerley's Turk].
the 6 yr old maire was out of a maire gott by Brimers [Brimmer] out of a Buttler [Bustler] maire & she was gott by my white Turk [in foal to Pulleine's Chesnut Arabian]".

The GSB, volume 1, 5th edition, page 389, says - "Rockwood, see p. 382, is also sometimes called Pulleine's Arabian". Page 382 says - "Rockwood, Pulleine's, out of the Lonsdale Tregonwell Barb Mare".

According to the evidence here Pulleine's Rockwood was identical with Pulleine's Old Arabian and Pulleine's White Turk, and he died between 1699 and 1706. The dams of the two four year old mares were by Place's White Turk and Rockwood's dam, the Lonsdale Tregonwell Barb Mare, bred a filly by Place's White Turk, so it is possible that Pulleine's White Turk was also by Place's White Turk.

Worlock's Galloway

According to Cuthbert Routh's Stud-Book, Early Records of the Thoroughbred Horse, by C M Prior, page 58, the Warlock Galloway was purchased from Captain William Worlock in 1732, who ran her that year as Cloudy.

The stallion advertisement, above, for the unnamed son of Sedley's Arabian, makes no mention of Worlock's Galloway and says the dam of the Carlisle Gelding was the Wharton Mare, and her dam was by Byerley's Turk.

The stallion advertisement for Young Highflyer, above, says "a daughter of the Carlisle Turk, sire of the Carlisle gelding's dam, and out of a daughter of the Pulleine old Arabian, &c". This evidence implies that the grandam of Worlock's Galloway was not the dam of the Carlisle Gelding.

According to the evidence there are two different families here:

Old Lady, sister to Carlisle Gelding, by Bald Galloway oo Wharton Mare by Carlisle Turk oo mare by Byerley's Turk.

Worlock's Galloway's dam by Bald Galloway oo mare by Carlisle Turk oo mare by Pulleine's Old Arabian.

Early Records of the Thoroughbred Horse, by C M Prior, part of a letter from Thomas Pulleine to John Holles, Duke of Newcastle, page 126, says: "1706, 28th [October], Bolton. The pedigree of the maires I send for yor Grace to have the refuseall off is as follows
The Lame philly's dam was gott by Mr Place white Turke & vnder a ffenwicke maire & her sire is my Chessnutt Arabian
thother 4 yr old philly's dam was out of Sr Mathew Peirson Running maire wch was the most famouse maire in my time & gott by Mr Place Turke & the philly's sire my Chessnutt Arab.
the 6 yr old maire was out of a maire gott by Brimers [Brimmer] out of a Buttler [Bustler] maire & she was gott by my white Turk [Rockwood]".

The six year old mare by Pulleine's White Turk was foaled in 1700 out of a mare by Brimmer out of a mare by Bustler. Crutches was foaled in 1705 by Grey Hautboy out of a mare by Selaby Turk out of a mare by Bustler. Grey Hautboy was by Pulleine's White Turk and Brimmer was also known as the Selaby Turk. This could be the same line, especially since Worlock's Galloway bred a daughter to Cottingham whose grandam was full sister to Crutches.

HAUTBOY AND GREY HAUTBOY

The GSB, volume 1, 5th edition, page 381, says - "Hautboy, bred by the Darcy Family, by the White Darcy Turk - Royal Mare. Hautboy got Grey Hautboy (sire of Bay Bolton), Windham, the dam of Snake, and the dam of Almanzor, Terror and Champion".

Pick's Turf Register, volume 1, page 5, says - "Hautboy, (sire of Grey Hautboy, that got Bay Bolton and Lamprie,) was bred by the D'Arcy family, and got by the White D'Arcy or Sedbury Turk, out of a Royal Mare" and "He was never trained for Racing, and was well known to Sportsmen and Breeders by the name of Wilkes's Old Hautboy. He was sire of Old Wyndham, Mr. Fell's Painted Lady, Sir John Parson's Ploughman, Farmer, and Clumsy, all three bred by Mr. Wilkes; the latter of which was sire of Old Fox and Fox-Cub. - Hautboy also got the Mare that was the dam of Mr. Darley's Almanzor, Terror, and Champion ; the dam of Mr. Lister's Snake ; the dam of the sire of the Gardener Mare, and several others".

The Racing Calendar for 1744, by John Cheny, in the index, page viii, says - "Hautboy, which got the Dam of Snake, was also the sire of Windham, of Sir John Parsons's Plowman, Farmer, and Clumsey, all three bred by Mr. Wilks; The latter of which was the Sire of Fox, and the Fox Cub or Squirrel. He also got Grey Hautboy, Sire of Bay Bolton, Lamprie, and Bell's Painted Lady, and of the Dam of the Earl of Portmore's Spinner, which was the Grand-Dam of Mr. Osbaldiston's Traveller. He got the Mare that was the Dam of Almanzor, Terror, and Champion, the Dam of Cream Cheeks, the Dam of the Sire of the Gardener's Grey Mare, the Dam of Mr. Egerton's Country Wench, which was the Dam of his Grey Mare that won the King's Hundred Guineas at Hambleton in 1729; the Dam of Lord Derby's Tickle Pitcher, the Grand-Dam of Mr. Mayes's (afterward Lord Portmore's) Merry Andrew; of Mr. Shafto's Orion, Young Greyhound, and the Great Grand-Dams of Barforth, Trusty, Brushwood, Country Lass, and Blackatop"

Pick's Turf Register, volume 1, page 174, says - "Cottingham, (sire of the dam of Judgment) a Chesnut Horse, and foaled in 1735. - He was bred by Mr. Constable, and got by Mr. Hartley's Blind Horse ; his dam by a Son of Snake ; grandam by a Son of Rockwood, out of Crutches and Wyndham's dam, page 7". Page 7, says - "Wyndham was got by Old Hautboy, (son of the White D'Arcy Turk) ; his dam, (Crutches's dam,) by the Marshall or Selaby Turk ; grandam by Bustler, (son of the Helmsley Turk) ; great grandam by Place's White Turk, (that got Wormwood) ; out of a daughter of Dodsworth. - This is the Pedigree of Wyndham, as it was generally given ; there have been objections made to the reality of it, though there were never any plausible reasons for them".

The GSB, volume 1, 1793 edition, page 291, says - "Cottingham, Mr Constable's, 1735, Hartley's Blind Horse - Son of Snake - Son of Rockwood - Windham & Crutche's dam, by the Selaby Turk - Bustler - Burnet's White Barb - Dodsworth". Burnet's White Barb must have been Place's White Turk as one of the co-executors of Place's Will was his cousin John Burnett.

Early Records of the Thoroughbred Horse, by C M Prior, page 27, in Cuthbert Routh's Stud-Book, says - "The Gray Mare I bought for Ld Exetr of Hen: Morton, was gott by Gray Cottingham, her dam of the Brimmr kind, she was eight years old [foaled 1717], and with foal to Mr Hartley's horse. 12th November, 1725. [Gray Cottingham, pedigree unknown.]" - This Gray Cottingham was probably the Son of Snake that was the maternal grandsire of Constable's Cottingham by Hartley's Blind Horse.

According to the GSB, volume 1, 5th edition, page 10, Crutches was a grey gelding, foaled in 1705, by Hautboy, and Windham was a grey colt, foaled in 1719, by Hautboy.

The produce of Hautboy and Grey Hautboy have long been confused. According to Pick the sire of Painted Lady was Old Hautboy whereas Cheny says the sire was Grey Hautboy, which stallion was also known as Son of Hautboy, Hautboy and Old Hautboy. It is generally accepted that both Crutches and Wyndham were sired by Old Hautboy but there must be some doubt that Old Hautboy was alive as late as 1718. The Duke of Somerset had two horses called Wyndham. The elder was matched against Bay Bolton (1705 by Grey Hautboy) in April 1713 and the younger ran as a five year old in October 1724. Although Grey Hautboy was definitely at stud from 1703 to 1715 and may have been alive as late as 1718, it is possible that the younger Wyndham was sired by the elder Wyndham.

York Courant, April 11, 1738, says "There is now in the Hands of Mr John Gale of Bishop Burton, near Beverley, in the East Riding of Yorkshire, the Horse called Dunkirk, fourteen Hands three Inches high, Master of twelve Stone Weight, one of the best Plate Horses in England in his Time, and Leaps Mares at one Guinea each. ----- He was bred by Thomas Lister, Esq; of Gisborn Park, got by Squirrel, full Brother to Old Fox, his Grandsire was Clumsey, and Great Grandsire Old Hautboy, Sire of Bay Bolton".

Grey Hautboy and Layton Grey Barb

If it is assumed that Crutches and the elder Wyndham were sired by Grey Hautboy, then the addition of the filly by Son of Rockwood to the produce of the Selaby Turk mare begins to make sense. The Son of Rockwood was also known as Layton Grey Barb and was used by Lord Darcy on some of the Royal Mares.

According to the GSB, volume 1, 5th edition, page 102, Sampson was a bay colt, 1745, by Blaze oo mare by Hip oo mare by Spark (son of Honeycomb Punch) oo mare by Snake oo Darcy's Queen by a Son of Hautboy oo mare by Brimmer oo Royal Mare.

Pick's Turf Register, volume 2, pages 190 and 191, says - "Hambletonian was got by Dainty Davy ; his dam by Regulus ; grandam, (Sampson and Baboon's dam, vol. 1, page 109) by Hip, (son of Mr. Curwen's Bay Barb) ; great grandam by Spark, (son of the Honeycomb Punch) ; great great grandam by Mr. Lister's Snake, out of Lord D'Arcy's Queen". Page 192, says - "Queen was bred by Lord D'Arcy, and got by a Son of Hautboy, out of a daughter of Brimmer".

Hautboy and Pulleine's White Turk

If Grey Hautboy and Layton Grey Barb were the same horse then it must follow that Hautboy and Pulleine's White Turk were also identical. This would seem to be confirmed by the above evidence which shows that the dam of the Wharton Mare was by Old Hautboy or Pulleine's White Turk.

Hautboy was by Darcy's White Turk out of a Royal Mare.

Pulleine's White Turk alias Pulleine's Old Arabian alias Pulleine's Rockwood was out of the Lonsdale Tregonwell Barb Mare and he died between 1699 and 1706. This would appear to be about the time that Hautboy died.

The sire of Pulleine's White Turk is unknown but as his dam had bred a filly by Place's White Turk it can be assumed that he was also by Place's White Turk. Darcy's White Turk, the sire of Hautboy, was also known as Place's White Turk.

History of the British Turf, by James Christie Whyte, 1840, volume 1, chapter XII, says - "We will conclude this chapter with the most accurate pedigree of Eclipse we have been able to put together".

It being assumed that Whyte was privy to information that we are not, this is a most interesting pedigree. Squirt's grandam (Grey Wilkes) is shown as being by Grey Hautboy and Grey Hautboy's dam is shown as Arlington Barb Mare. The reference, in the pedigree of Regulus, to Snake's dam being sister to Grey Hautboy is a printing error. This should read (Hautboy - dam unknown) as in the pedigree of Squirt, while the (Hautboy - Arlington barb mare) should be dropped one place as the parents of Grey Hautboy. As Grey Wilkes was also known as Wilkes Old Hautboy mare, it seems more likely that it was Grey Hautboy, and not his sire, who was also known as Wilkes Old Hautboy.

HAMPTON COURT CHILDERS

According to the GSB, volume 1, 5th edition, pages 10 and 11, Hampton Court Childers was by Childers out of Duchess by Newcastle Turk out of Grey Royal by Darcy's White Turk out of a mare by Darcy's Yellow Turk out of a Royal Mare.

Pick's Turf Register, volume 1, page 54, says - "The Hampton-Court Childers was bred by the Duke of Devonshire, and got by his Grace's Childers; his dam, called Duchess, by the Duke of Newcastle's Turk, out of a daughter of the D'Arcy's White Turk, which mare was of the Royal kind, and called Grey Royal".

The Racing Calendar for 1744, by John Cheny, in the index, page xix, says - "The Hampton-Court Childers's Dam was called Duchess, she was got by the Duke of Newcastle's Turk, her Grand-Dam by the Darcy White Turk, she was of the Royal Kind, and called Grey Royal".

The Racing Calendar for 1746, by John Cheny, in the index, pages 138 and 139, says - "The Turk that got Hautboy, was also the Sire of Cannon, of the Darcy Grey Royal, the Grand Dam of the Devonshire Dutchess, which was the Dam of the Hampton-Court Childers, and many others".

The GSB, volume 4, 4th edition, page 305, says - "Ground Ivy, a bay horse, foaled in 1737, got by Y. Lamprey, out of Y. Duchess, sister to the Hampton Court Childers".

Pond's Sporting Kalendar for 1754, page 157, says - "Ground-Ivy was got by young Lamprie, his Dam by the Devonshire Childers, his Grandam (old Duchess) by the Newcastle Turk, his Great Grandam (grey Royal) by the Darcey white Turk, Sire of old Hautboy, upon a Royal Mare".

An advertisement in Faulkner's Dublin Journal, 12 - 16 June, 1750, Number 2427, says - "Ground Ivy, to be let to Mares this Season at Minola in the County of Mayo, at a Guinea, a Crown, and two English Shillings to the Groom for each Mare. His Size, Beauty, and great Performances, have been so remarkable, that he requires no Elogy; his Colts have such Size and Fashion, that they would now be matched against any Things in this Kingdom. He was got by young Lampre (Sire also of Silver Tail, Small Hopes, &c) Son of old Lampre, own Brother to Bay Bolton; his Dam (own sister to the Hampton Court Childers) was got by the Devonshire Childers; his Grandam (old Dutchess) by the Newcastle Turk; his Great Grandam (Grey Royal) by the Darcy white Turk (Sire of Hautboy, &c) upon a Royal Mare; young Lampre's Dam (Dam also of old Violante) was the Godolphin famous Snake Mare; her Dam was Mr Wilks's famous Hautboy Mare".

The Racing Calendar for 1746, by John Cheny, in the index, page 143, says - "The Hampton-Court Childers was bred by his Grace the Duke of Devonshire, and got by Childers. The Dam of the Hampton-Court Childers, was call'd Dutchess (she was got by the Newcastle Turk) her Grand Dam was got by the Westal Turk ; her Great Grand Dam by the Darcy Black Legs ; her Great Great Grand Dam was called Old Royal ; she was out of a Darcy Royal Mare, and the Darcy White Turk".

Early Records of the Thoroughbred Horse, by C M Prior, page 124, in the list of the Duchess of Newcastle's Mares for 1712, mentions - "A filly foal Bay, 4 years old, by ye Pagett Arab of her Call'd Darcy's Young Sorrill out of a Royall Mare Call'd Black Leggs & Gott by Wastell's Turk, her Dam Gott by Duke of Rutland's Black Leggs out of Darcy's oldest Royall Mare".

The evidence here points to Darcy's Oldest Royal Mare being the same mare as Old Grey Royal.

Pond's Sporting Kalendar for 1754, page 149, says - "The Hampton Court Childers was got by the Devonshire Childers, out of Mr. Childers's Mare called Duchess, which was full Sister to the Dam of Morrat and Gypsey".

The Dublin Journal, Saturday, February 16, 1765, number 3946, a sale of the entire Stud, with all the Horses in Training, of Edward M'Dermot, Esq, at Rockfield near Roscommon, on the 15th Day of March, 1765, includes - "a dark grey Filly, 4 Years old, a very fine promising Filly, and extremely strong, 15 Hands 1 Inch; she was got by Bustard, her Dam by Merry Andrew, her Grandam by Lath, her Great Grandam by Old Crab, her Great Great Grandam, called Gipsy, by Bay Bolton, and her Great, Great, Great Grandam by the Newcastle Turk, which was the Dam of Morat, Bony Batchelor and Dutchess".

The Universal Advertiser, Dublin, Tuesday, March 1, 1757, Number 453, says - "A Brown bay horse, full 15 hands high, rising 7 years old, quite sound, free from blemish, the property of John Taase, is to cover mares this season at Swords, in the county of Dublin, at half a guinea and a shilling to the groom, the money to be paid at the stable door. He was got by white foot upon a dam of ground Ivy; ground Ivy’s dam was got by the duke of Devonshire’s childers; his grand dam dutchess, by the duke of Newcastle’s turk; his great grand dam was called gray royal, sister to old Hautboy, which was got by the darcy white turk, upon a royal foreign mare. N B Any person inclined to purchase the above stallion, may treat for him any time before the 1st day of April next, and if not sold by that time, will be let out to mares as above. The stallion is now to be seen at Naul in the county of Meath".

This information is most exciting, as further investigation will show.

TANTIVY

According to the GSB, volume 1, 5th edition, pages 146 and 5, Morat and Gipsy were by Bay Bolton out of a mare by Newcastle Turk out of Grey Ramsden's dam by Byerley's Turk out of a mare by Taffolet Barb out of a mare by Place's White Turk out of a Natural Barb Mare of Mr Tregonwell's.

An Introduction to a General Stud-Book, page 186, says - "Spectator - Mr. Panton, 1749, Crab - Partner - Bay Bolton - Darley's Arabian - Byerley Turk - Place's White Turk - Taffolet Barb - Barb Mare".

Pick's Turf Register, volume 1, page 25, says - "Fearnought was got by Bay Bolton; his dam by the Lexington Grey Arabian; grandam by the Curwen Old Spot; great grandam by Old Spanker, out of a daughter of the Byerley Turk, which mare was the dam of Grey Ramsden, and full sister to the dam of Tantivy, a son of the Taffolet Barb".

Heber's Racing Calendar, volume IV, for the year 1754, page 232, says - "Fearnought's Dam was got by the Lexington Grey Arabian, his Grand Dam by Old Spot, his great Grand Dam by Sir William Ramsden's [Young] Spanker, his great great Grand Dam by the Byerly Turk, which Mare was the Dam of Grey Ramsden, and full Sister to the Dam of Tantivy".

The Racing Calendar for 1743, by John Cheny, in the index, page xxi, says - "Fearnought's Dam was got by the Lexington Grey Arabian, his Grand-Dam by Old Spot, his Great Grand-Dam by Sir William Ramsden's [Young] Spanker, his Great Great Grand-Dam by the Byerley Turk, which Mare was the Dam of Grey Ramsden, and full sister to the Dam of Tantivy".

The Racing Calendar for 1746, by John Cheny, in the index, page 144, says - "The Dam of Fearnought was got by the Lexington Arabian, his Grand Dam by the Curwen Spot, bred, &c. as p.139, His Great Grand Dam by the Ramsden [Young] Spanker, his Great Great Grand Dam by the Byerley Turk, out of the Dam of Grey Ramsden, which Dam was full Sister to the Dam of the Curwen Tantivie. Fearnought's Great Great Great Grand Dam was got by the Taffolet Barb, her Dam by Place White Turk, out of Barb Mare".

This pedigree would appear to be responsible for the addition of the cross of the Taffolet Barb between the mare by Byerley's Turk and the mare by Place's White Turk. The Byerley Turk mare is here said to be "out of the Dam of Grey Ramsden, which Dam was full Sister to the Dam of the Curwen Tantivie", and the sire of Tantivy, the Taffolet Barb, is then said to be the sire of the next dam. A literal reading of this pedigree makes the dam of Tantivy by the Taffolet Barb.

Pick's Turf Register, volume 1, in the index, page xxviii, says - "Tantivy, Sir William Ramsden's, (by the Taffolet Barb, dam by the Byerley Turk)".

The Taffolet Barb variously appears here as the sire of Tantivy, the sire of the dam of Tantivy, the sire of the grandam of Tantivy, and the sire of the great grandam of Tantivy. It seems highly unlikely that he was the sire of the great grandam of Tantivy, and the error in the pedigree of Fearnought seems to deny the possibility that he was either the sire of the dam or the sire of the grandam of Tantivy. If we assume for the moment that the Taffolet Barb was only the sire of Tantivy, then Pond's pedigree of Duchess would read:

by Newcastle Turk - mare by Byerley's Turk - mare by Place's [Darcy's] White Turk.

This compares with Cheny's pedigree which reads:

by Newcastle Turk - dam not stated - grandam Grey Royal by Darcy's [Place's] White Turk.

An Introduction to a General Stud-Book, page 131, says - "Snip mare [Paragon], Her dam (the dam of Merry Andrew, and sister to Whitefoot) by Bay Bolton - Darley's Arabian - Byerley Turk - Place's White Turk - Natural Barb Mare". This is confirmed in the the GSB, volume 1, 5th edition, page 150, as - "Paragon, Got by Snip, her dam, Bonnylass, by Bay Bolton - Darley's Arabian - Byerly Turk - Place's White Turk".

The following pedigrees of Hermit are certified by his breeder Thomas Panton:

The London Evening Post, Thursday, February 28 to Saturday, March 2, 1765, number 5825, says - "To Cover this Season, 1765. The Money to be paid at the Stable Door, or when the Mares are taken away. Good Grass for Mares, and proper Care taken of them. / Heber".

Heber's Racing Calendar, volume IX, for the year 1759, page 146, says - "To Cover this Season, 1760, at Buntingford, near Royston in Hertfordshire, at 1 Guinea a Mare, and 1 s. the Servant, the Brown Horse called Hermit, 15 Hands and an Inch high, very beautiful and strong, his Pedigree is as follows: Newmarket, January 2, 1760. I do hereby certify that the Brown Horse, called Hermit, as mentioned above, late Mr. Swymmer’s, and now the Property of Wm Erratt, was bred by me and is no more than 7 Years old last Grass, that he is full Brother to Spectator, and was got by Crab, his Dam by Partner, his Grand Dam by Bay Bolton, which Mare was the Dam of the D. of Bolton’s Merry Andrew, and full Sister to Ld. Godolphin’s Whitefoot and Wryfoot, his Great Grand Dam by Darley’s Arabian, Sire of Devonshire Childers, his Great, Great Grand Dam by the Byerley Turk, his Great, Great, Great Grand Dam by Place’s White Turk, his Great, Great, Great, Great Grand Dam by the Taffolet Barb, out of a natural Barb Mare. Tho. Panton. The Money to be paid at the Stable-door, or when the Mares are taken away. Good Grass for Mares, and proper Care taken of them".

This agrees with the following pedigree of his full brother Spectator:

An Introduction to a General Stud-Book, page 186, says - "Spectator - Mr. Panton, 1749, Crab - Partner - Bay Bolton - Darley's Arabian - Byerley Turk - Place's White Turk - Taffolet Barb - Barb Mare".

The following pedigree of Spectator is certified by his breeder Thomas Panton:

Heber's Racing Calendar, volume X, for the year 1760, page 147, says - "To Cover this Season, at Grimsthorpe in Lincolnshire, at 3 Guineas a Mare, and Half a Crown the Servant, The Bay Horse called Spectator ; whose Pedigree is as follows : I do hereby certify, that the Bay Horse called Spectator, as mentioned above, was bred by me, and got by Crab, his Dam by Partner, his Grand Dam by Bay Bolton, which Mare was the Dam of the Duke of Bolton's Merry Andrew, and full Sister to Ld Godolphin's Whitefoot and Wryfoot ; his Great Grand Dam by Darley's Arabian, Sire of Devonshire Childers ; his Great, Great Grand Dam by the Byerly Turk, his Great, Great, Great Grand Dam by Place's White Turk, his Great, Great, Great, Great Grand Dam by the Taffolet Barb out of a natural Barb Mare. Tho. Panton. N. B. The Money to be paid before the Mares are taken away. Good Grass for Mares at the usual Prices".

The Morning Post and Fashionable World, London, Monday, November 2, 1795, number 7405, Sales By Auction, By Mr Tattersall, says - "This Day, The following are the Property of a Gentleman: Lot 1. A Brown Mare, aged, got by Snap, her dam by Blank, her grand dam by Old Cade, her great grand dam by Old Partner, her gt gt grand dam by Bay Bolton (which Mare was the dam of the Duke of Bolton's Merry Andrew, and full sister to Lord Godolphin's Whitefoot and Wryfoot) her gt gt gt grand dam by Darley's Arabian (Sire of the Devonshire Childers), gt gt gt gt grand dam by the Byerly Turk, gt gt gt gt gt grand dam by Place's White Turk, gt gt gt gt gt gt grand dam by the Tripoli Barb, out of a natural Barb mare".

The Partner mare here is Hermit and Spectator's dam. Her pedigree is nearly identical to that given in the advertisement for Hermit, but the Taffolet Barb is here called the Tripoli Barb.

I think the Taffolet Barb mentioned here is not Curwen's Bay Barb but Darcy's Yellow Turk, alias Dodsworth, who was probably imported from Tripoli via Tafilalt in Morocco, together with the Barb Mare known as Dodsworth's dam.

The evidence here points to Old Grey Royal being the same as the mare by Place's White Turk out of Tregonwell's Barb Mare. It also points to the possibility that Byerley's Turk was the same stallion as the Duke of Rutland's Blacklegs.

Proof that the Taffolet Barb was Curwen's Bay Barb

An advertisement in the Stamford Mercury, Thursday, May 13, 1714, for Mr. Robert Smith of Peterborow in Northamptonshire, outlining the various wines he has for sale, ends - "He also hath a Bay Stone Horse, Brother to the famous Tantivy, got by Mr. Curwin's Bay Barb: any Gentleman or others, may have a Mare or Mares covered by him at the aforesaid Place at half a Guinea per Mare, and the same may be sent as often as they think fit, till they stand by the aforesaid Horse".

DUCHESS

The dam of Hampton Court Childers was commonly known as Devonshire Duchess, however according to Pond's Sporting Kalendar she was "Mr. Childers's Mare called Duchess, which was full Sister to the Dam of Morrat and Gypsey". Childers's Duchess was involved in the ill-fated running of Queen Anne's Gold Cup at York in 1714 and as this race was for six year olds it can be assumed that Childers's Duchess was foaled in 1708. The four year old bay filly by Pagett's Arabian, mentioned in the list of the Duchess of Newcastle's mares for 1712 in Prior's Early Records of the Thoroughbred Horse, has the same pedigree as Devonshire Duchess and was also foaled in 1708. According to Baily's Racing Register, volume 1, page 2, Childers's Duchess was a bay mare.

The York Courant, Tuesday, February 22, 1743, Number 906, says - "To Leap this Season, 1742-3, At One Guinea a Mare, and One Shilling to his Keeper, At Mr Stephen Jefferson's, at Clifton nigh York, A High-bred beautiful Bay ston'd Horse, known by the Name of Young Childers, full fifteen Hands high, sound and clean of Blemishes, goes well upon his Legs, and able to carry fifteen stone a-hunting. His Pedigree is certify'd by his Grace the Duke of Somerset, as under. He was got by the Hampton-Court Childers, he got by the Flying-Childers; his Grand dam was Dutchess, that won the fourth Heat in Clifton-Ings, in the Year 1714, for the Royal Plate; his Dam, Bonny-Lass, bought of the late Earl of Holderness; and Bonny Lass was out of the famous Gipsey Mare, got by his Lordship's Turk, given him by Sir Robert Sutton. / Somerset".

The evidence here points to Duchess being a bay mare foaled in 1708 by Pagett's Arabian. Pagett's Arabian was foaled in 1697 and was acquired in 1703 in Constantinople by William, 6th Lord Pagett for John Holles, Duke of Newcastle. This is the stallion commonly known as the Newcastle Turk.

Prior's Early Records of the Thoroughbred Horse, in the Duke of Newcastle's Stud Book, 1700 to 1712, pages 113 to 124, records the first five matings of Darcy's Sorrill Royal Mare as follows:

Early Records of the Thoroughbred Horse, by C M Prior, The Duke of Newcastle's Stud, page 115, says - "a Mare Given by Mr. Jessop. Darcy's had for hir 100 0 0 [£100]". No date given for this gift.

Early Records of the Thoroughbred Horse, by C M Prior, The Duke of Newcastle's Stud, page 116, says - "An Acct of what mares are not with foal and by what horses served ; all of 'em now at Houghton, Aprill the 7th, 1709. Darcy's Sorrill real [Royal] Mare by Pagits Arab".

Early Records of the Thoroughbred Horse, by C M Prior, The Duke of Newcastle's Stud, page 117, says - "A List of the Foales Fall'n this year 1709 & of the Mares Covered & by wch Stallions this year 1709. Darcy's sorrill Royal Mare by the Litle Arab April the 21th & the 30th". Prior has added a note [Presented by Mr Jessop, see p. 115.]

Early Records of the Thoroughbred Horse, by C M Prior, The Duke of Newcastle's Stud, page 118, says - "An Accot of his Grace's Brood Mares wch were Covered this year 1710 & what Stallions such mares were serv'd by. Serv'd by the Little Arabian. [Harley's Arabian]. Aprill 16 The Royall Mare". Prior has added a note [Presented by Mr. Jessop, see page 115].

Early Records of the Thoroughbred Horse, by C M Prior, The Duke of Newcastle's Stud, page 118, says - "An Accot of his Grace's brood Mares to be cover'd in the year 1711, and by which of his Grace's Stallions. By the Pagett Arab : [Great Arabian]. Darcy's Royall Mare".

Early Records of the Thoroughbred Horse, by C M Prior, The Duke of Newcastle's Stud, page 119, says - "July ye 24th 1711. The Mares that has no Foles this Year but is Cover'd. Darcy's Royall Mare, 8 years old, with the Great Arab". This gives a year of foaling of 1703.

Early Records of the Thoroughbred Horse, by C M Prior, The Duke of Newcastle's Stud, page 122, says - "A List of Her Grace's foales of this Year 1712 out of wch Mares they fell & by which of Her Grace's Stallions they were Gott. March ye 29th. Royall Mare foaled a filly foal of a Light Bay Colour a Star in her forehead & the of foot Behind White above ye fetlock, Gott by ye Great Arab".

The dam of the Duchess of Newcastle's four year old filly by Pagett's Arabian is shown as Darcy's Young Sorrill but the pedigree given is that of Darcy's Sorrill real [Royal] Mare, foaled in 1703, by Wastell's Turk out of the Royall Mare Black Leggs. This mare was given by Mr Jessop to the Duke of Newcastle, and her foal of 1708 [Duchess] was the subject of a letter recorded in Early Records of the Thoroughbred Horse, by C M Prior, page 127, endorsed "Octobr ye 1st 1708. A copy of his Graces letter to Mr. Darcy about ye philley foal out of Blackleggs & ye philley out of ye grey mare". The letter begins "I recd yors of ye 21st Ult & tho I did undrstand Mr Jessop yu was to have a philley Foal out of Blackleggs [Darcy's Sorrill Royal Mare] got by my Paget Arab yet I did not apprehend it was to be ye first Foal I had".

This is summarised as follows :

1708 Bay filly by Pagett's Arabian
                                                   1709 Barren to Pagett's Arabian
                                                   1710 Barren to Harley's Arabian
                                                   1711 Barren to Harley's Arabian
1712 Bay filly by Pagett's Arabian

The 1708 filly was Duchess and the 1712 filly was probably the dam of Morat and Gipsey.

Family 29

According to the GSB, volume 1, 5th edition, page 89, Vanessa was got by Regulus - mare by Fox - her dam by the Bloody-Shouldered Arabian - Bassett Arabian - Natural Barb Mare.

It would appear that Bassett Arabian is a misrepresentation of Pagett Arabian.

The Bassett Arabian mare was foaled after the dam of Morat and Gipsey; and the Oxford Dun Arabian mare, dam of Miss Slamerkin, was probably foaled in 1716 as the Oxford Dun Arabian was imported in 1715 and the Duchess of Newcastle died in December 1716.

Northern Nanny

Sir William Lowther's chesnut mare, Northern Nanny, ran unplaced in the Royal Plate at Hambleton for five year old mares in 1722 and the Royal Plate at York for six year old horses in 1723. This mare is confused in the GSB, volume 1, 5th edition, page 7, with the mare Northern Nancy, who is credited with her foals Jenny-come-tye-me and Routh's Crab. Her daughter Jilt bred Golden Ball who appears on page 380 as "Golden Ball, Mr Routh's, 1735, by Partner - Hutton's White Turk [Surley] - Highland Laddie - Byerly Turk". Northern Nanny appears in Early Records of the Thoroughbred Horse, by C M Prior, page 38, in the list of Cuthbert Routh's broodmares for 1726 as "My Chesnt Mare gott by Highland Laddy, her dam by the Byrley Turk. Servd this year with Mr Hutton's White Horse". also under foals of 1726 "A Chessnt filley foal out of my Chess: mare Northern Nanny, and gott by Mr Hutton's little white horse. Three white feet, & blaze in her face, was foaled 13th Mar: 1725:6". This filly is Jilt, the dam of Golden Ball.

It is only supposition but the Byerley's Turk mare may be the dam of Tantivy. The next dam was Tregonwell Barb mare alias Old Grey Royal. Old Grey Royal's daughter by Blunderbuss was the grandam of Hartley's Blind Horse who was mated to Northern Nanny to produce Young Nanny in 1725.

The Dublin Journal, From Saturday March the 19th to Tuesday March the 22nd, 1742, Number 1745, says - "The famous grey Horse Elephant, brought into this Kingdom by Robert Baldwin, Esq; is to be let out to Mares this Season by William Brenan at Arklow in the County of Wicklow, at a Guinea each Mare, Leaps and Tryals, and Half a Crown to the Groom. Elephant was bred by Sir Michael Newton, and got by his grey Arabian, his Dam was bred by Mr Bethell of Swinton, she was got by bay Bolton, which is the Sire of Starling and Fearnought, her Dam was got by a famous Horse called Round Robin, and out of the Dam of Mr Bethell’s of Rice’s Woodcock".

The Stamford Mercury, Thursday, March 26, 1778, Number 2456, says - "The noted Horse Spot, (The Property of Samuel Siddall, of Bourn,) will Cover this Season, at One guinea a Mare. Spot was bred by the late Edm. Turner, Esq; of Stoke near Grantham, and his pedigree is as follows: He was got by Blank, his dam by old Regulus, his Grandam by old Royal, Sire of Capt. Appleyard’s bald Charlotte, his great Grandam by Mr Curven’s grey Barb, his great great Grandam by Mr Curven’s bay Barb, Sire of Brocklesby Betty, and out of a Mare of Lord Lonsdale’s called the Tregonnel Mare, which Mare was bred by Mr Curven, and esteemed one of the highest Blood Mares Mr Curven had. The above Pedigree was taken from Mr Curven’s Stud Book, by the late Charles Pelham, Esq; of Brocklesby".

The Universal Advertiser, Tuesday, April 30, 1754. Number 153, says - "To be let to Mares this Season, at Eccles Vell, near Fentona, in the county of Tyrone, Mazard, alias Roger; he is a jet black, 15 hands and an inch high, and every way qualified to get officers horses, hunters, and running cattle; for the encouragement of breeders in that part of the world, he will be let at so small a price as 2 guineas each mare, and a crown to the groom, the money to be paid without distinction before the horse leaves the stable. He was remarkably fruitful last year, which was his first season: mr Eccles had 13 mares covered by him, which were all in foal; any mare that he covered last season, which has not a foal, shall be covered this year at half price, provided the mare is under 10 years old.—The following pedigree, certified by Sir Marmaduke Wyvill, will clearly shew what may be expected from a horse of his blood, size, strength and beauty.—This is to certify, that the black stone horse which I sold to mr Eccles, was bred by me, and now rises 9 years old the next grass; he was got by my Scarborough colt, his dam by Belgrade the 2d, his grandam by Old Tifter, his great grandam by Lord Darcey’s Woodcock, his great great grandam by Lord Darcey’s Chesnut Arabian, his great great great grandam by Blunderbuss, out of a natural Barb mare, which was dam to the famous Makeless. Scarborough colt was a son of my Old Scarborough mare and Old Tifter; he won the great stakes at Richmond when 5 years old, and the King’s plate at Leith when 6; and got the dam of Antelope, and many excellent horses. Belgrade the 2d, was the sire of Volunteer, Bashaw, Garnet, Primate and Antelope. Woodcock got the famous Diana mare, and many others of great note; he was son of Old Merlin and Tyrconnel Barb mare. The Chesnut Arabian above mentioned, got Jews-trump, and mr Bethell’s Royal. Blunderbuss was one of the most noted stallions of his Time, and to this day his blood is as much valued as any in England. The above account is true, witness my hand, / Marmaduke Wyvill".

According to Prior's The Royal Studs of the Sixteenth and Seventeenth Centuries, page 211, a gold cup presented by Queen Anne for the Royal Plate at Bramham Moor bears the inscription "Ruffler and Woodcock on Bramham Moor, 1705 and 1708".

Early Records of the Thoroughbred Horse, by C M Prior, page 147, says - "Another of his [Merlin's] sons, Woodcock, is stated in the General Stud-Book to have been foaled in 1715, but as Mr. Bethell, of Rise, whose ancestor owned the horse, has been kind enough to show the editor of these papers a very beautiful gold cup, presented by Queen Anne and bearing the Royal Arms, won by him at Bramham Moor in 1708, with his name engraved thereon, he was evidently born earlier than Castaway, possibly in 1703".

A note in The Family Tables of Racehorses, by Kazimierz Bobinski, volume 1, family 31, says - "it remains open to speculation whether Woodcock, foaled in 1715 (winner in 1721 of His Majesty's 100 gs. in specie at York and of a King's Plate at Lincoln, and owned by Mr. Raikes Fulthorpe) or Mr. Bethell's Woodcock (winner of Queen Anne's Gold Cup at Bramham Moor in 1708) is a brother to Mr. Bethell's Castaway".

It would appear from the evidence that Bethell's Woodcock and Raikes Fulthorpe's Woodcock were both by the same sire as Bethell's Castaway, with Bethell's Woodcock, foaled in 1702, being the stallion known as Darcy's Woodcock who sired foals from 1716 to 1724.

SPARK

The GSB, volume 1, 5th edition, page 383, says - "Spark, by Honeycomb Punch [by Taffolet Barb], out of Wilkes's Old Hautboy Mare, possibly Grey Wilkes".

Early Records of the Thoroughbred Horse, by C M Prior, page 38, in Cuthbert Routh's Stud-Book, says - "[Note.- Spark by Honeycomb Punch (son of the Taffolet Barb) out of Wilkes' Old Hautboy mare, for note on whom see p. 30.]". Page 30, says - "The mare [my] Surley was out of was got by Coney skins, her dam by old Ho'boy, & her dam [i.e., the Ho'boy mare] was bred by old Wilks, and out of a mare of Sr Wm Wyvill's, calld Clubfoot".

Heber's Racing Calendar, volume IV, for the year 1754, page 238, says - "Bald Partner Sire's Dam was got by Spark, Son of the famous Honeycomb Punch, and out of the Robinson Hautboy Mare, bred by Mr. Wilks, and was the Dam of the Dam of Regulus, and the Dam of the Dam of the Metcalf Lady Betty and Lady Caroline".

According to the GSB, volume 1, 5th edition, page 153, Bald Partner was by a son of Lord Essex's Smiling Ball.

The Newcastle Courant, Saturday, March 15, 1739-40, Number 777, says - "To be Leap'd this Season, At Hart, near Hartlepool, in the County of Durham, For One Guinea a Mare, and One Shilling the Keeper, A Bay Colt, four Years old this Grass, belonging to Mr Ellerker: He is full fifteen hands high, very strong and beautiful, with good Marks, and clear of all Blemishes: He was bred by Mr Robinson of Richmond, and was got by Smiling Ball from a sparke Mare, whose Dame was old Wilkie: Smiling Ball was bred by Mr Gase, of Panton, in Lincolnshire; he was got by a Son of Acklam Merlin; Ball's Dam was bred by Mr Curwin, of Workington; she was got by Mr Curwin's old Barb, which was Mr Pelham's, afterwards; she was the Dam of Lord Gower's Chance Gelding: Ball, in his Performances, won, in Plates and Money, in the Year 1726, 190 l 13 s. In 1727, 402 l 7 s. In 1728, 1092 l. In 1729, 357 l. He won in the four Summers 2042 l. N B Good Grass for Mares, and proper Care will be taken of them".

The Newcastle Courant, March 2-9, 1745, Number 2672, says - "Mr Robinson's Spark was from one of the Duke of Montague's Infant Mares, got by Honey come punch me; Honey come punch me was bred by Major Rookby".

Grey Wilkes was full sister to, or the same mare as, the Old Wen Mare, the dam of Alcock's Arabian by Curwen's Bay Barb, and their dam Darcy's Pet Mare was Grey Royal, the fourth dam of Hampton Court Childers.

HONEYCOMB PUNCH

The GSB, volume 1, 5th edition, page 381, says - "Honeycomb Punch, by the Taffolet or Morocco Barb, won at Newmarket in 1699 as Sir George Warburton's".

The American Farmer, by J S Skinner, 1827, volume IX, page 398, Sporting Olio, The Famous Horse Lath, part of a letter written by Charles Sallard, Sr, on March 1st, 1779, says - "Lath is fifteen hands one inch high, strong and boney, was got by Shepherd's Crab, sire of Mr Vernon's Shepherdess, (at present the best mare in England,) the Duke of Devonshire's celebrated Fairy, and many other famous racers. Shepherd's Crab was a very excellent son of old Crab, and out of the famous Witherington mare, daughter of old Partner. The dam of Lath was got by old Lath, one of the best sons of the Godolphin Arabian, and out of Roxana, a daughter of the Bald Galloway, the fleetest horse (the Devonshire Childers excepted,) that ever ran over the Newmarket course. His (Lath above,) grandam by Flying Childers, great grandam by Makeless, out of a full sister to the Honeycomb Punch, son of the Taffolet Barb, his great great great grandam was a natural Barb mare. The grandam of Lath was the grandam of Col. Tasker's famous mare Selima and Lord Rockingham's famous horse Weasel".

Honeycomb Punch is a misnomer. The correct name is Honey come punch or Honey come punch me.

The dam of Honey come Punch was a Natural Barb Mare. This does not mean that the mare was imported but that she was a pure bred Barb. At the time Arabian, Barb and Turk were used indiscriminately, so this mare would also have been known as an Arabian and a Turk.

It is only speculation but a likely contender for this Natural Barb Mare is the Tregonwell Barb Mare, who was grandam of Tantivy, son of the Taffolet Barb. She was also grandam of Alcock's Arabian, by Curwen's Bay Barb (Taffolet Barb), and great grandam of a mare by Spark, son of Honey come punch by the Taffolet Barb.

Taffolet

The largest Saharan oasis of southern Morocco is situated on the Oued Ziz south of the High Atlas and is variously known as Tafilalet, Tafilalt, Tafilelt and Tafilet. The Filali lineage of sharifs which ruled this area later became the Alawite Dynasty which rules Morocco to the present day. In 1672 Mulay Ismail al-Samin, son of Mulay Muhammad al-Sharif, King of Tafilalt, became Sultan of Morocco and he ruled until 1727. A treaty with France was signed in 1682 to encourage commerce and put down piracy, so it must have been some time after this date that the Taffolet, or Morocco, Barb was brought to England.

CURWEN'S BAY BARB

The Origin & History of the British Thoroughbred Horse, by J B Robertson, in The Lonsdale Library, Volume XXVIII, Flat Racing, pages 33 and 34, says - "When James II abdicated and fled to France, in 1688, many of his adherents followed him. One such was Henry Curwen. He remained in France till towards the close of William III's reign. In the meantime his estates had been administered by his cousin, and his stud dispersed".

It was during his stay in France that Curwen acquired a stallion that Mulay Ismail al-Samin had presented to Louis XIV. This stallion was brought to England in 1698 and became famous as Curwen's Bay Barb. In fact this stallion was so famous that he was long known only as The Bay Barb.

Byram

The GSB, volume 1, 5th edition, page 390, says - "Curwen's Bay Barb, was a present to Lewis the Fourteenth from Muly Ishmael, King of Morocco, and was brought into England by Mr Curwen, who being in France when Count Byram and Count Thoulouse (two natural sons of Lewis the Fourteenth), were, the former, Master of the Horse, and the latter, an Admiral, he procured of them, about the end of the seventeenth century, two Barb horses, both of which proved excellent stallions, and are well known by the names of the Curwen Bay Barb, and the Thoulouse Barb".

I have been unable to find a place in France called Byram or an illegitimate son of Louis XIV called Count Byram. There is, however, a place in Yorkshire called Byram and on November 30, 1689, John Ramsden was created a Baronet of Byram by William III. His son Sir William Ramsden, 2nd Baronet of Byram, married Elizabeth, daughter of John Lowther, 1st Viscount Lonsdale.

Henry Curwen was probably in France from 1688 to 1698, during which time his estates in England were administered by his cousin Darcy Curwen (1643 - 1722) and his stud dispersed. It is possible that the Bay Barb came into his possession early in the 1690s and was taken to England for him by Sir William Ramsden, 2nd Baronet of Byram, where he covered as the Taffolet Barb and the Lowther Bay Barb. The earliest known foal by the Taffolet Barb was Honeycomb Punch, who ran at Newmarket in 1699 and was therefore foaled about 1693.

Pick's Turf Register, volume 1, in the index, page xxviii, says Tantivy by the Taffolet Barb was owned by Sir William Ramsden, and The Racing Calendar for 1746, by John Cheny, in the index, page 144, says Sir William Ramsden's Tantivy by the Taffolet Barb was also known as the Curwen Tantivy. The GSB, volume 1, 5th edition, page 390, says Tantivy was by Curwen's Bay Barb.

In 1698 Henry Curwen returned to England with another stallion, which he sold to Sir John Parsons, which became known as the Thoulouse Barb, Parsons Barb and the Burlington Turk. He must then have recovered his original stallion from Sir William Ramsden which continued for some years to be known as the Taffolet, Morocco or Bay Barb. The earliest dated foal by Curwen's Bay Barb was Creeping Molly in 1700, which fits perfectly with Henry Curwen's return in 1698.

Henry Curwen, a Roman Catholic, wasn't allowed, by law, to own any horse above the value of five pounds. In an effort to avoid his stallion being confiscated, he allowed Charles Pelham, a Protestant, to keep the horse for him at his stud at Brocklesby Park in Lincolnshire, where he came to be known as Pelham's Bay Barb.

Pick's Turf Register, volume 1, page 29, says Monkey was bred by Lord Lonsdale and was got by his Bay Arabian out of a mare by Curwen's Bay Barb out of a mare by Byerley's Turk out of an Arabian Mare. This is further evidence that Curwen's Bay Barb and the Taffolet Barb may have been the same horse, as Pick says Tantivy was by the Taffolet Barb out of a mare by Byerley's Turk.

The age of the Bay Barb

Early Records of the Thoroughbred Horse, by C M Prior, page 146, says - "Unfortunately no records of Mr Curwen's stud, which was a most important one, have been preserved by the family, but from a picture in the possession of the Earl of Ancaster, he [Curwen's Bay Barb] is depicted as a blaze-faced bay, and the description states that the horse came from France in 1698, and that the picture is copied from the original [by John Wootton] by W. Shaw, painted in the 12th year of the horses age, and that he died in his 38th year".

If it is assumed that the Bay Barb was presented by Mulay Ismail al-Samin to Louis XIV at the time of the signing of the treaty with France in 1682 and that he was a yearling, then he would have been foaled in 1681. He would have been 12 years old in 1693 and already in England when he was painted, and 34 years old in 1715 when he covered the dam of Hip. He would have died in 1719 in his 38th year.

It being extremely rare for a stallion to be covering in his 34th year, let us assume he last covered in his 29th year. He would have been foaled in 1686, 6 years old in 1692 when he covered the dam of Honeycomb Punch, 12 years old in 1698 when he was painted and when Henry Curwen returned to England and 29 years old in 1715 when he covered the dam of Hip. He would have died in 1724 in his 38th year.

TREGONWELL'S BARB MARE

The GSB, volume 1, 5th edition, page 382, says - "Rockwood, Pulleine's, out of the Lonsdale Tregonwell Barb Mare".

The GSB, volume 1, 5th edition, page 378, says - "Bumper, Sir J. Pennyman's (aft. Mr Maskell's), 1735, by Partner - Bay Bolton - Commoner - Restive - Lord Lonsdale's Tregonwell Barb mare".

An Introduction to a General Stud-Book, page 167, says - "Bumper, Sir J. Pennyman, Partner - Bay Bolton - Commoner - Restive - an Arabian Mare of Ld Lonsdale's".

The Racing Calendar for 1744, by John Cheny, page 125, says of Bumper - "He was bred by Sir James Pennyman, got by Partner; his Dam by Bay Bolton; his Grand-Dam by Commoner; his Great Grand-Dam was out of Lord Lonsdale's Arabian Mare, and Restive".

The Sporting Kalendar for 1757, by John Pond, page 221, says Trumpet's dam was - "out of a Darcy Yellow Turk Layton Mare, and she was got by Place's white Trugunwell Turk, that got Commoner and the Ranter Gelding".

The Derby Mercury, Friday, March 14, 1755, part of the advertisement for the stallion Silver-Leg, says - "Eminent for his great Success in Give and take Plates, was foal'd at Weybridge in Surry, and was got by the Earl of Portmore's Cartouch, Son of Old Cartouch, who was got by the Bald Galloway, and whose Dam was got by the Cripp'd Barb, his Grand-Dam by Makeless, and she was out of Trumpet's Dam, which was out of a Darcy Yellow Mare, which was got by Place's White Tregonwell Turk, that Commoner the Ranter Gelding, and several Running Horses at that Time was out of [sired by] Silver Leg's Dam, was got by Old Cartouch, his Grand Dam by Darley's Arabian, (Sire of Old Childers) his Great Grand-Dam was the dam of Bay Bolton and Lamprey, both high bred and famous Race Horses. Bay Bolton belong'd to the Duke of Bolton, and Lamprey, to the Earl of Godolphin. Their Pedigrees are so well known to Sportsmen, that it is needless to mention them"

The GSB, volume 1, 5th edition, page 14, says Lord Lonsdale's Counsellor was by the Shaftesbury Turk out of a sister to Spanker by Darcy's Yellow Turk out of the Old Morocco Mare by Fairfax's Morocco Barb.

The Origin & History of the British Thoroughbred Horse, by J B Robertson, in The Lonsdale Library, Volume XXVIII, Flat Racing, page 31, says - "The terms Arab, Barb and Turk were indiscriminately applied to the same animal. Thus, Sir Anthony Ashley Cooper, first Earl of Shaftesbury, in a letter written from the Tower of London in 1681 concerning the sale of his horses and mares, describes his Turk as 'my Arabian.' Included in Lord Shaftesbury's mares at St Giles, Wimborne, was Bay Darcy, covered in 1681 by the Shaftesbury Turk. For her the Earl asked £40 with her colt foal. This mare apparently was bought by Sir John Lowther, first Viscount Lonsdale, and was the dam of the Lonsdale Counsellor, by the Shaftesbury Turk (Stud Book, vol. 1), and, further, may be identified as a mare bred by James Darcy the elder (or younger) at Sedbury, and as by the Darcy Yellow Turk, out of the Old Morocco Mare (Old Peg, No. 6 Family)".

Early Records of the Thoroughbred Horse, by C M Prior, page 28, in Cuthbert Routh's Stud-Book, says - "[Wood's] Counsellor's dam was got by Makeless, her dam was a Barb mare of Sr Hugh Cholmondley's. His sire's [Darcy's Counsellor's] dam was the Violet Laton mare in Ld D'arcy's stud. His grandsire's [Lonsdale Counsellor's] dam was gott by the White Turk, who got Cannon and Ho'boy. And her dam by the Yellow Turk, who got Old Spanker".

The pedigree of Lord Lonsdale's Counsellor in the GSB makes his dam a full sister to Spanker, while the version entered in Cuthbert Routh's Stud Book makes his dam a daughter of Darcy's White Turk out of a daughter of Darcy's Yellow Turk. This pedigree actually refers to Darcy's Counsellor and should read - "His sire's [Darcy's Counsellor's] dam was the Violet Laton mare in Ld D'arcy's stud. His sire's [Darcy's Counsellor's] dam was gott by the White Turk, who got Cannon and Ho'boy. His grandsire's [Lonsdale Counsellor's] dam by the Yellow Turk, who got Old Spanker".

It being more than probable that Lord Lonsdale's Counsellor was descended from his Arabian Mare, then the Lonsdale Arabian Mare would have been a full sister to Spanker by Darcy's Yellow Turk out of the Old Morocco Mare.

The records show that the Tregonwell Barb Mare was the property of Sir John Lowther, who was created Viscount Lonsdale in 1696, and she had a daughter by Place's White Turk. The pedigree of Trumpet's dam in Pond's Sporting Kalendar refers to Place's White Turk as Place's White Trugunwell Turk. It may be that the daughter was a Place's White Trugunwell Turk mare, which was shortened to Trugunwell Barb mare. A more correct name for her dam, the Tregonwell Barb Mare, may be Lord Lonsdale's Arabian Mare, and if Pond's pedigree of Duchess is correct then she was a grey mare by Darcy's Yellow Turk out of a grey Royal Mare, and identical to Darcy's Grey Royal Mare.

The Tregonwell Barb mare was probably by Place's White Trugunwell Turk out of Lord Lonsdale's Arabian Mare and was identical to Old Grey Royal.

According to the GSB, volume 1, 5th edition, page 379, Wood's Counsellor was foaled in 1694. As the next advertisement shows that he was still covering in 1731, it is possible that 1694 refers to his sire Darcy's Counsellor.

The Newcastle Courant, Saturday, March 7, 1730-1, Number 306, says - "The Horse called Councellor, (which got Mr Mennell’s Horse call’d Thunderbolt) is kept at Beedle, and will be leaped this Season, at one Guinea a Mare, and Twelve-pence to the Man".

RESTIVE

According to the GSB, volume 1, 5th edition, page 156, Mr Egerton's Pigot Turk mare was out of a mare by Byerley's Turk out of a mare by Castleton out of a sister to Sir John Lowther's Old Resty. According to a letter from J Griffin to the ninth Duke of Rutland, as reproduced in Prior's Early Records of the Thoroughbred Horse, page 105, the Duke of Rutland's Castleton was of full age in 1687. Sir John Lowther was created Viscount Lonsdale in 1696, so it is more than possible that Old Resty was identical with the stallion Restive, whose daughter out of Lord Lonsdale's Tregonwell Barb Mare was the ancestress of Maskell's Bumper.

The Newcastle Courant, Saturday, April 21, 1739, Number 730, says - "To be Leap'd this Season, At George Snawdon's, at White-House, near Ormsby, in Cleaveland, in the County of York, at Half a Guinea a Mare, A Beautiful Horse, call'd Rainbow, seven Years old this Grass, full fourteen Hands three Inches high, and of great Strength: He was got by Mr Croft's Bloody Buttocks, and out of a Mare got by Bay Bolton, which was under a Mare bred by Lord Lonsdale's, got by Croft's Commoner, which Lord Lonsdale's Mare was out of his Lordship's old Arabian Mare, and got by his old Horse Resty. N B If any Mares are sent to him to stay till serv'd, they'll have good Grass on reasonable Terms, and be well taken Care of".
