MERLIN, SMILING TOM, HIGHLANDER AND WOODCOCK

AN INVESTIGATION INTO THEIR TRUE IDENTITIES

MERLIN

The GSB, volume 1, 5th edition, page 382, says - "Merlin (Old), Sir M. Pierson's, by Bustler ; afterwards sold to Mr Acklem".

Pick's Turf Register, volume 1, page 18, says - "Old Merlin was bred by Sir Matthew Peirson, Bart. and sold to Mr. Acklom for a stallion. - He was got by Bustler, (son of the Helmsley Turk). Merlin won several Plates and great Matches ; he was in a very high form for racing, and allowed to be the best horse that had ever ran in the kingdom. He was sire of Mr. Bethell's Woodcock and Castaway ; Mr. Richardson's Merlin, and several others".

Sir John Dutton's Book of Pedigrees, Gloucestershire Record Office, Document Reference D678/1, F14/5/6, says - "A Pedigree of Bay Bolton taken out of Sr Mathew Pearson's Book who bred him. 6 Decr 1735. Bay Bolton was foaled ye 3d May 1705. A Bay Colt foal, the far foot behind white, got by Mr Constable's Grey horse Hautboy, which Grey horse was bred by Sr Wm Strikland. Bay Bolton's Dam was got by Makeless, His Grandam by Brimmer, His Great Grandam by Diamond, out of Sr Mathew Pearson's little Bay Mare, full Sister to his sorrel Running Mare; which sorrell Mare was Old Merlin's Dam"

Sir Matthew Pierson's mares may be related in some way to Dicky Pierson, perhaps full sisters to him by Dodsworth, alias Darcy's Yellow Turk, out of Lawson's Barb Mare. See DARCY'S YELLOW TURK, DARCY'S WHITE TURK AND HELMSLEY TURK for more information.

The 2nd Marquis of Rockingham's pedigree collection, Sheffield Archives, Document Reference WWM/R/193/37, says - "Selima, 9th August 1755, The Bay Mare I sold to the Marquiss of Rockingham, was got by Bajazett, her Dam by Bloody Buttocks, her Grandam by Almanzor, her Great Grandam by Sr Wm Strickland's Hautboy was own Sister to Bay Bolton and Lamprey, her Great Great Grandam by Makeless, her G G G Grandam by Brimmer who was Ocklam Merlin's Dam & was Grandam to Terror, her G G G G Grandam by Diamond, her G G G G G Grandam was full Sister to Old Merlin's Dam".

It is clear from this pedigree that Ocklam Merlin and Old Merlin were different horses, and according to this pedigree the Brimmer mare, grandam of Bay Bolton, was also grandam of Terror. This makes Mr Brewster's famous mare a half sister to the dam of Bay Bolton.

The GSB, volume 1, 5th edition, page 384, says - "Terror, by the Burlington Turk - Little Merlin - Brimmer - Helmsley Turk".

Cheny's Racing Calendar for 1743, page xxvi in the index, says - "Chance was bred by his Grace the Duke of Bolton, and got by Fearnought, Son of Bay Bolton. His Dam was got by Almanzor, Son of the Darley Arabian. Chance's Grand-Dam was called Coquette, she was got by Basto, Son of the Byerley Turk. His Great Grand-Dam was got by a Son of Spanker, her Dam by Hautboy, out of a Daughter of Bustler, Son of the Helmsley Turk. Almanzor, which got the Dam of Chance, was bred by the late Mr. Brewster, his Dam was also the Dam of Old Terror and Champion. This Mare as the said Mr. Brewster assured me in his own House (looking his Book at the same time for the Account thereof) was a Mare that had been Sir Matthew Pearson's, and that she was got by Old Hautboy ; yet others I have heard positively affirm that she was got by Old Merlin".

The 2nd Marquis of Rockingham's pedigree collection, Sheffield Archives, a small account book entitled Expences of the Studd from: May 1st 1751, says - "Bought Jan 1752 of Mr Carlin […] Years old Bl[…] Got by Blaze, her Dam by Boys Dimple, her Grandam by Grime’s Champion, her great grandam by Darley’s Arabian. NB Champion was got by the Harpam Arabian out of S’r Matt Peirson’s best Merlin Mare / Witness: J. Greame".

The doubt surrounding the identity of the sire of Mr Brewster's mare has arisen because the Brimmer mare, that bred Acclom's Merlin, appears to have had two grandsons called Terror. One by the Acaster Turk out of a mare by Hautboy. The other by the Burlington Turk (Thoulouse Barb) out of a mare by Little Merlin, the sire of Acclom's Merlin, whose pedigree lacks the cross of Diamond but includes a cross of Diamond's sire, the Helmsley Turk.

Also, this is the dam line of both Old Merlin and Acclom Merlin, so the Hautboy mare would have been known as a Merlin Mare - a mare from the line of Merlin.

Merlin mare

The descendants of Dick Burton's Mare all trace back to her through a mare by Darley's Arabian out of sister to Ruffler by Son of Brimmer. There are, however, alternative versions of the pedigrees of Red Rose, GSB, volume 1, 5th edition, page 163, and her grandaughter Orange Bud, GSB, volume 2, fourth edition, page 150, which show that the mare by Darley's Arabian was out of a mare by Merlin. This Merlin mare would be a full sister to Castaway and Woodcock, out of sister to Ruffler.

In The Family Tables of Racehorses, by Kazimierz Bobinski, volume 1, family 31, a note has been appended - "Family 31 is notable for the numerous instances of controversy in respect of its early ancestry" and "it remains open to speculation whether the Darley Arabian Mare (Generation 3) was a half-sister to Woodcock and Castaway, or a daughter of an own sister to Woodcock and Castaway".

King Herod was by Tartar out of Cypron by Blaze out of Selima by Bethell's Arabian out of a mare by Graeme's Champion out of a mare by Darley's Arabian out of a mare by Merlin.

Red Rose and King Herod were out of mares by Blaze. King Herod's grandam was by Bethell's Arabian. The third dam of Red Rose was by Darley's Arabian out of a mare by Merlin, while the fourth dam of King Herod was also by Darley's Arabian out of mare by Merlin. Bethell's Arabian and the first six dams of Red Rose were all owned by Mr Hugh Bethell of Rise, in Holderness.

I think the mares by Darley's Arabian are identical and the Merlin mare was in fact Mr Brewster's Famous Mare by Hautboy.

Mr Brewster's Famous Mare

The GSB, volume 1, 5th edition, page 380, says - "Goliah, Duke of Bolton's, b. c., bred by Mr Hutchinson, 1730, by Fox - Graham's Champion - Sir M. Pierson's Blue Cap. Mr. Hutchinson also bred a sister to Goliah".

The GSB, volume 1, 5th edition, page 88, in the entry for sister to Goliah, says - "Blue Cap, if the same as Penruddock's Blue Cap, was by Old Greyhound".

These are the only mentions of Sir M Pierson's Blue Cap in the stud book.

The Racing Calendar for 1743, by John Cheny, in the index, page xliv, says - "Young Cuddy was got by Capt. Appleyard's Cuddy, which was out of the Dam of Bald Charlotte and Fox. His Dam was got by Smiling Tom, his Grand Dam by Sir William Strickland's Blue Cap, his Great Grand-Dam by the sire of Bay Bolton, &c".

The GSB, volume 1, 5th edition, page 153, says - "Partner Mare, Bred by Mr Osbaldeston, her dam by Gallant's Smiling Tom - Traveller's dam, by Almanzor - Bay Bolton's sister, by Grey Hautboy - Makeless - Brimmer - Diamond - sister to the dam of Old Merlin".

It is possible that the mare by the sire of Bay Bolton and Bay Bolton's sister are the same mare.

Mr Curwen's Terror was owned by him as early as 1712, when he covered the dam of Hannibal. He was previously owned by Sir William Strickland and was probably bred by Sir Matthew Pierson. There is no evidence that Sir William Strickland owned the Hautboy mare, which appears to have been acquired by Mr Brewster (Darley) after the birth of Smockface, by Darley's Arabian. Smockface was owned by Sir Matthew Pierson and may have been bred by him. Mr Brewster then bred Aleppo, Almanzor and Whitelegs. Sir Matthew Pierson bred Graham's Champion in 1707 and a sister to him, so Terror was probably foaled before 1707. The next advertisement confirms that Smockface was bred by Sir Matthew Pierson:

The Shrewsbury Chronicle or Wood's British Gazette, Saturday, March 05, 1774, Volume III, Number 61, page 3, says - "To be Sold, At Francis James's, of Podford, in the Parish of High Ercall, in the County of Salop. Two fine Geldings; one a dark Grey, and the other Black. The Grey Gelding is rising seven Years old; the Black Gelding rising four Years old, each near fifteen Hands and a half high. The Grey Gelding is able to carry sixteen Stone with the fleetest Hounds in this Kingdom. - He was got by the Hon. F. Gower's fine Grey Horse called the Grey-Colt, now in the Hands of his Lordship; which was got by his Lordship's Arabian, now called Gower's Stallion, which was the Sire of Sweepstakes, Little David, and Invalid; Invalid won the great Subscription Plate at Newmarket of 3600l. his Dam was got by Foxhunter; his Dam by Smockface, Son of the Darlow Arabian, out of Sir Matthew Pearson's Mare, which was the Dam of Terror; her Great Grandam by Ld Wharton's Old Snail; her Great Great Grandam by Burford's Bull, out of a Mare of Mr. Wilkinson's: Bull was got by Brimmer, and his Dam by Layton's Barb Mare: Foxhunter was got by the Bald Galloway, Son of Victor's Barb; his Dam by Snake, Son of the Leicester Turk: This Grey Gelding's Dam was got by Mr. Humphries's Bay Horse, which was thought to be the best Foxhunter in this County, and out of a Mare of Mr. Young's, of the Wood, near Newport, Shropshire".

It is possible that when Mr Curwen acquired Terror from Sir William Strickland he was called Blue Cap and he changed his name to Terror. Blue Cap had previously been bred to Bay Bolton's sister, which was bred by Sir Matthew Pierson, so it is possible that this is the Blue Cap bred and owned by Sir Matthew Pierson. This would mean that the dam of Goliah was by Champion out of a mare by Champion's half brother Blue Cap, and it may be that this Blue cap mare was the daughter of Bay Bolton's sister. This Blue Cap mare bred a filly by Smiling Tom. Blue Cap's half brother Almanzor also bred a filly out of Bay Bolton's sister that bred a filly by Smiling Tom. It will also be noted that Terror got a sister to Hannibal that also bred a filly by Smiling Tom.

The York Courant, Tuesday, February 17, 1756, Number 1582, says - "To be Sold, The Property of John Pollard, of Stubbs Hall, near Doncaster, Two Stallions; the one a very genteel Bay Horse, call'd Silvertail, six Years old, well mark'd, full fifteen Hands one Inch and an half high, Master of 16 Stone a-hunting, is allowed to be one of the best Chapmen's Horses in the Country, and his Foals, of their Year, none can exceed. The other a Brown Bay Horse, call'd Stranger, five Years old, fifteen Hands high. Stranger was got by a Son of Young Iphis. Iphis was got by Makeless, and Makeless by the Earl of Albemarle's Grey Arabian; his Dam, by Old Partner; his Grandam, by Cricket, and out of a Mare got by Aleppo; his great Grandam, by Mr Curwen's Terror; and his Great Great Grandam was Lord Derwentwater's white Mare, which was taken at Preston, in 1713 [1715]. The above Horses are free from Blemishes".

This pedigree shows the same inbreeding as the Champion mare. The grandam by Cricket was out of a mare by Aleppo out of a mare by Aleppo's half brother Terror. It is open to speculaion whether Lord Derwentwater's white mare was the same mare as the sister to Bay Bolton. The sister to Bay Bolton must have been grey as she bred the grey Spinner to the chesnut Almanzor.

ALEPPO

Pick's Turf Register, volume 1, page 27, says - "Aleppo (a Bay Horse, foaled in 1711) was bred by Mr Darley, of Aldby-Park, near York, and got by his Arabian, (sire of Childers, &c.)" and "He was, when a Stallion, the property of Mr Bawtry, and was sire of Mr. Hassell's Scrutineer, &c. but covered very few well-bred Mares".

The Caledonian Mercury, Tuesday, April 17, 1750, Number 4606, says - "The said Mr Rattray has in his possession a fine Chesnut-colour'd Ston'd Horse, whose Name is Lowse; he was got by Burlingtoun, the full Brother of Panton's Molly; his Dam was got by Bawtry's blind Horse, Bawtry's Horse was got by Darley's Arabian, the Sire of Childers, and out of a Mare got by Old Marling; Lowse's Grandam was got by Devonshire's Dimple, and Lowse was bred by Edmond Anderson; and will be let out at half a Guinea a Foal, and a Shilling to the Servant, or a Crown, Leap and Trial, and one Shilling to the Servant, all to be paid at the Stable door".

According to this evidence Aleppo was Bawtry's Blind Horse.

On August 22, 1716, Mr Darley's bay horse Aleppo, by Darley's Arabian and Mr Bawtry's bay horse Danger, by Darley's Arabian, both ran in the Ladies Plate for 5 year olds at York.

The GSB, volume 1, 5th edition, page 76, says - "Danger Mare, Foaled in 1728, got by Danger (son of Darley's Arabian), out of Old Partner's dam". This mare bred fillies by Hobgoblin in 1738 and 1741.

Prior's The Royal Studs of the Sixteenth and Seventeenth Centuries, page 140, says - "The Pelham Mare (Chesnut, 1728). By a Son of Darlow's [Darley's] Arabian, sire of Hobgoblin [i.e., Aleppo], out of a Daughter of ye Bay Barb [Curwen's], full sister to Mr. Minchell's [Minshull's] Mixbury, and was dam to Partner". also "In Lord Godolphin's stud book it particularly states that the filly was coming three years old on 13th April, 1731, and also that her sire was Aleppo, by the Darley Arabian".

The GSB, volume 1, 5th edition, page 381, says - "Hobgoblin, Mr Goodall's, and sold to Mr Coke, 1724, by Aleppo, son of Darley Arabian".

Hobgoblin was mated to his half-sister to produce the fillies of 1738 and 1741. This is consistent with the other incestuous matings of this family. It would seem that the Bawtry's Danger that ran against Aleppo in 1716 died and Mr Bawtry later purchased Aleppo and renamed him Danger.

Despite these three horses being out of the same mare, all three pedigrees are different.

According to the GSB, volume 1, 5th edition, page 204 and 205, Grenadier (1746) was by Blaze oo mare by Sultan oo (Grey Childers' dam) by Wharton's Commoner - Castaway.

According to the GSB, volume 1, 5th edition, page 6, Grey Childers and the Sultan mare were out of a grey mare by Wharton's Commoner oo Bald Charlotte's dam by Castaway oo Appleyard's grey mare by Brimmer or son of Brimmer - Royal Mare.

According to the GSB, volume 1, 5th edition, page 32, Sultan (gr 1732) was by the Lonsdale Arabian out of sister to Bonny Lass by Bay Bolton.

The correct pedigrees are:

Grenadier (1746) by Blaze oo mare by Sultan oo mare by Wharton's Commoner oo mare by Castaway.

Sultan (1732) by Lonsdale (Grey) Arabian oo mare by Smiling Tom oo mare by Darley's Arabian oo Mr Brewster's famous mare by Hautboy.

SYPHAX

Cheny's Racing Calendar, 1743, page xlv, says - "Dairy-Maid was bred by the late Mr. Elstob of Yorkshire, and got by Almanzor, Son of the Darley Arabian. Her Dam was call'd the Hambleton Mare, because got by a Horse that won the first Plate run for at Hambleton ; which Horse was Sir William Strickland's, and called Syphax. The Hambleton Plate at that time was free for either Horse, Mare or Gelding".

Heber's Racing Calendar, volume XI, 1761, Stallions to Cover in the following Season, 1762, page 167, says - "Also, at the same Place [George Grisewood's, Sadler, in Morrfields, London], for 2 Guineas and 2 Shillings, his Chesnut Horse Forester, full 15 Hands and a Half high, Master of 18 st. and is allowed to be as fine a Horse as most in England. He was got by Crofts's Chesnut Horse Forester, (Sire of Ld. Antrim's Gustavus) and Richard Williams, Esqr's, noted Horse Forester, out of a Mare got by Snake, her dam was got by Robinson Crusoe, her Grand Dam by Iphis (when in the Hands of Sir William Strickland) and won the first Gold Cup that was run for at Black Hamilton, her Great Grand Dam by Hautboy, and her Great Great Grand Dam by Brimmer".

There is every reason to believe that the "Great Grand Dam by Hautboy" was Mr Brewster's Famous Mare, and this pedigree might be saying that the "Grand Dam by Iphis" won the first Gold Cup that was run for at Black Hamilton, meaning the first winner of the race for mares only. The next entry confirms that the Hambleton Mare also won the Royal Plate at Hambleton.

The Sporting Magazine, volume 32, September 1808, page 271, says - "Winners of the Royal Plates at Hambleton, &c. from 1715 to 1808. To the Editor of the Sporting Magazine. Sir, as you have given the Winners of the Royal Plates at York, I have taken the liberty of sending you a complete List of the Mares who have won the Royal Plates at Black Hambleton, * Yorkshire, beginning with the year 1715, which is as far back as I can trace with accuracy :- The insertion thereof in your next number, will oblige, Your's, &c. W. P., York, September 10, 1808". The * leads to the following note - "The Royal Cup run for at Hambleton, at its first commencement, was free for either horse, mare, or gelding, provided they were no more than five years old, carrying 10st. each, four miles. - Queen Anne altered it to be run for by five-year old mares, the same weight and distance. - The first Cup (ever run for at that place) was won by Sir William Strickland's Syphax, who was sire to the famous Hambleton Mare, who also won the Royal Plate at Hambleton. - She was the dam of Mr. Elstobb's Shadow, (afterwards Sir Edward O'Brien's Dairymaid) by Mr. Darley's Almanzor".

Cheny's Racing Calendar, 1741, page 57, Curragh of Kildaire nigh Dublin - Ireland, says - "On the Same Course, on the eleventh ditto [September], a second hundred Guineas given by his Majesty were run for, free only for Mares, carrying ten Stone. Which Prize was won by Sir Edward Obrien’s Bay M Athenais, often called Dairy Maid".

Iphis appears to be a mispronounciation of Syphax. If you drop the S and pronounce the x as an s you get Yphas or Iphis.

Whitelegs was bred by Mr Brewster and was sometimes referred to as Brother to Almanzor. He was later owned by the Duke of Somerset and was considered as good a horse as Almanzor, although he never ran in public due to an accidental injury.

These are the produce of Mr Brewster's Famous Mare incorporating the evidence and conjecture contained in this article:

SMILING TOM

The GSB, volume 1, 5th edition, page 383, says - "Smiling Tom (Gallant's), bred at Hampton Court, 1724, by the Conyers Arabian - Chillaby - Makeless". This is confirmed by Pick's Turf Register, volume 1, page 26.

Pick's Turf Register, volume 1, page 27, says - "Smiling Tom was sire of Captain Appleyard's Favourite, Mr. Read's Lucy, and of the dam of the Duke of Ancaster's Dizzy, (grandam of Sir H. Harpur's Pilot, &c.) He got several others".

In Early Records of the Thoroughbred Horse, by C M Prior, page 89, in the Duke of Ancaster's Stud-Book, Prior says - "neither is any pedigree available of Smiling Tom, though he covered mares in this stud in 1723, 1730 and 1731, and must not be confused with the better known stallion of this name (Gallant's) Smiling Tom, who was foaled in 1724 at Hampton Court". The result of the 1731 cover was the dam of the Duke of Ancaster's Dizzy.

Gallant's Smiling Tom ran as a four year old in 1728 and as a five year old in 1729, so it would appear that Prior was right and there were two stallions called Smiling Tom. The truth is there was only one stallion called Smiling Tom but there were two horses called Gallant's Smiling Tom.

The Racing Calendar for 1744, by John Cheny, in the index, page xvii, says - "Smoker was got by the Gallant Smiling Tom, which was bred in the Royal Stud at Hampton Court, and got by the Conyers Arabian. His Dam was got by the White Barb of King William's, called Chillaby, his Grand-Dam by Makeless, Son of the Oglethorp Arabian. He was also the Sire of Captain Appleyard's Craftsman and Favourite, Mr. Brewsters Plunder, Mr. Bacchus's Greyhound, Mr. Gallant's Young Smiling Tom, Miss Brigham, Mr. Griffin's Polly Peachum, &c".

It was Gallant's Young Smiling Tom who was foaled in 1724 and who ran as Gallant's Smiling Tom in 1728 and 1729.

The York Courant, Tuesday, March 17, 1729-30, Number 236, says - "This is to give Notice, the Grey Stud Horse called, Smiling Tom, is still in the Hands of Thomas Gallon of Burn-Park nigh Beverley, and will leap Mares this Season, at two Guineas each Mare, and Half a Crown to his Servant. Note, This is the Horse that the late Stud-Master, Mr Marshal give him the Pedigree of, and witnessed by his own Hand, which is this: He was got by Richard's Arabian; the Dam got by King William's white Barb; the Grand Dam got by Makeless out of a Snowden Mare of Mr Crofts, which was a through bred Mare. He has Grass for Mares at a reasonable Rate".

The Newcastle Journal, Saturday, April 9, 1743, Number 210, says - "To Leap this Season, At Benwell, within two Miles of Newcastle, At One Guinea a Mare, and Half a Crown to the Man, Robert Shafto, Esquire’s Bay Stone Horse, got by Snake, Snake got by Lister’s Turk, and bred by Mr Robinson of Easby in Yorkshire; his Dam by the Duke of Rutland’s grey Turk, her Dam by Hoy-Boy; and his Dam by Gallon’s Horse of Beverly, which came from Hampton-Court. She was called Miss Brigham, won several Plates, and the King’s Plate in Scotland: He is full 15 Hands and an Inch, every way proportionable, of Strength to carry any Weight, and free from all natural Blemishes. N B Grass for Mares, and proper Care taken of them, at reasonable Rates".

It is clear from these two advertisements that the owner of Smiling Tom was called Gallon and not Gallant.

It is possible that the third dam of Smiling Tom, Mr Croft's Snowden Mare, was Mr Croft's Place's White Turk mare, the dam of Trumpet. It is also possible that Smiling Tom and Old Cartouch shared the same grandam:

Pick's Turf Register, volume 1, page 17, says Old Cartouch - "was got by the Bald Galloway; his dam was bred in the Royal Stud at Hampton-Court, and got by the Cripple Barb; grandam by Makeless; great grandam by Place's White Turk, a daughter of Dodsworth, out of Mr. Layton's Violet Barb Mare".

The York Courant, Tuesday, March 17, 1729-30, Number 236, says Smiling Tom - "was got by Richard's Arabian; the Dam got by King William's white Barb; the Grand Dam got by Makeless out of a Snowden Mare of Mr Crofts, which was a through bred Mare".

Pick's Turf Register, volume 1, page 21, says - "Victorious [1722] was got by Mr. Bethell's Ruffler; his dam by Mr. Hutton's Grey Barb; grandam, (Bay Wilkinson's dam, and grandam of Mr. Grisewood's Partner) by Whynot; great grandam by Mr. Wilkinson's Turk, out of Old Woodcock, by D'Arcy's Woodcock". The same page also says - "He was sire of Lord Portmore's Highlander, &c".

Pick's Turf Register, volume 1, page 43, says - "Bred by Lord Portmore, and sold to Mr. Grisewood. Partner was got by Mr. Crofts's Partner; his dam by Hutton's Grey Barb; grandam, (Bay Wilkinson's dam) by Whynot; great grandam by Wilkinson's Turk, out of a mare of Mr. Wilkinson's called Old Woodcock, by the D'Arcy Woodcock".

According to the GSB, volume 1, 5th edition, page 103, Victorious and Grisewood's Partner were out of the same Hutton's Grey Barb mare, which would make Highlander's sire and dam half siblings. The above pedigrees make it clear, however, that they were out of full sisters and Highlander's sire and dam were first cousins.

Pond's Sporting Kalendar for 1754, page 156, says - "Mariamne, the Earl of Portmore's, was got by Victorious, her Dam by Partner, her Grandam by Richardson's Merlin, a Son of old Merlin, bred by Sir Matthew Pierson, her Great Grandam by Makeless, her Great Great Grandam by Burfoot's Ball, her Great Great Great Grandam by an Arabian of the old Duke of Devonshire's. Victorious was got by Ruffler, his Dam by the late Hutton's grey Barb, his Grandam by Bay Whynot, which was the Dam of Bay Wilkinson. She came from a kind of Mr. Wilkinson's called the Smithson; Mariamne is full Sister to Sir Ralph Gore's Mare".

Pond's Sporting Kalendar for 1752, page 137, says - "Chance, Earl of March's, was got by a Son of Childers; his dam by Partner".

Pond's Sporting Kalendar for 1754, page 198, says - "Chance, late the Earl of March's, was got by Chance, and out of a Partner Mare (which was the Dam of Sir Ralph Gore's grey Mare, and the Earl of Portmore's grey Mare, Victorious)". This Victorious was also full sister to Mariamne.

RUFFLER

According to the GSB, volume 1, 5th edition, page 4, Ruffler was bred by Mr Bethell and got by a son of Brimmer and the Chesterfield Arabian, out of Dick Burton's mare. His sister was the dam of Castaway and Woodcock.

An Introduction to a General Stud-Book, page 184, says - "Ruffler - By a son of Old Brimmer - Chesterfield Arabian - Hutton Barb".

Pick's Turf Register, volume 1, page 21, says - "Ruffler was bred [by] Mr. Bethell of Rise, in Holderness, and got by a well-bred Son of Brimmer, out of the noted running Mare, called Dick Burton's Mare, which was the grandam of Castaway and Woodcock. - The sire of Ruffler never started, and died when young".

Heber's Racing Calendar, volume X, for the year 1760, in the list of stallions to cover in the following season, 1761, page 146, says -"Highlander was got by the E. of Portmore's Victorious, a Son of the famous Ruffler, that came from a noted Running Mare, called Dick Burton's Mare, but her exact Pedigree now unknown; but Ruffler was got by a well-bred Son of Old Brimmer, that never started, and died when young; his Dam was got by the Old E. of Chesterfield's Arabian out of a well-bred Daughter of the Hutton Barb; which Mare was also Dam of a Grey Horse called Partner, bred by Ld Portmore, but commonly called Grisewood's Partner, from the great Number of Plates he won whilst Mr. Grisewood's Property".

This is probably the pedigree responsible for the erroneous entries in volume one of the General Stud Book, which were caused by the misreading of the line "but Ruffler was got by a well-bred Son of Old Brimmer, that never started, and died when young; his Dam was got by the Old E. of Chesterfield's Arabian out of a well-bred Daughter of the Hutton Barb". The dam by Chesterfield's Arabian was actually the dam of Highlander, and her full sister was the dam of Ruffler, 1732, by Bethell's Arabian.

The Family Tables of Racehorses, by Kazimierz Bobinski, volume 1, family 62, shows Ruffler, 1732, by Bethell's Arabian out of mare by Chesterfield Arabian out of the dam of Grisewood's Partner. A note has been appended - "This Ruffler, who does not appear in the GSB, is often confused with Ruffler (Fam.31), brother to Castaway's dam". A note appended to family 31 says - "Available evidence tends to deny the authenticity of the cross of the Chesterfield Arabian which was introduced into the pedigree of Son of Brimmer Mare by the compiler of the 5th edition of Vol. 1 of the GSB, and this cross has therefore been omitted above".

In Prior's The Royal Studs of the Sixteenth and Seventeenth Centuries, pages 181 to 184, in the Earl of Antrim's Stud Book, Lord Portmore's Highlander is shown as the sire of foals in Ireland in 1752, 1753, 1755 and 1756.

According to Heber's Racing Calendar, volume VII, 1757, page 154, Highlander covered in Ireland from 1st January 1751 to 1st January 1758.

According to Pick's Turf Register, volume 1, page 92, Lord Portmore's Highlander was a stallion at Hampton Court from 1758.

According to Heber's Racing Calendar, volume X, 1760, page 146, Lord Portmore's Highlander's last race was the King's Plate at Newmarket in March 1749. He was advertised to cover in 1761 at Hampton Court.

It would seem that following his win at Newmarket in March 1749, Lord Portmore's Highlander was sent to stud in Ireland. He returned to England in 1758 and took up stud duties at Hampton Court. It is because of his name and his time at stud in Ireland that he was thought to be the sire of Johnson and Trench's bay horse Highlander, that was foaled in 1750 and won the Royal Plate at Downpatrick in 1756.

The GSB, volume 1, 5th edition, page 381, says Lord Portmore's Highlander by Victorious was out of a mare by Crawford's Turk. Crawford's Turk was also known as Stamford's Turk and had known foals from 1745 to 1750, so is most unlikely to have been the maternal grandsire of Lord Portmore's Highlander in 1742. The Devonshire Blacklegs, who was foaled in 1728 and had known foals from 1738 to 1747, is even less likely to have been his great grandsire. The editors of the GSB have probably confused the pedigrees of a father and son because they were both called Highlander.

This is the pedigree of Young Highlander incorporating the evidence and conjecture contained in this article:

Scheik, the sire of Brown Bess, was foaled in 1826 by Lord Orford's Arabian out of Selma by Selim.

First Fruit had descendants in the female line for at least three generations but the line from Red Rose is now extinct.

WOODCOCK

In The Family Tables of Racehorses, by Kazimierz Bobinski, volume 1, in the section Some horses of note, which cannot be traced to any of the established families, the entry for Woodcock is as follows:

WOODCOCK, a very popular name in pre-Hanoverian days.
It is most difficult to discriminate between various stallions of
this name appearing in early pedigrees. The following Woodcocks
                                   have to be noted:

                                      1) D'Arcy's Woodcock, sire of the tap-root mare of Fam. 62,
before 1700. By Bustler (son of the Helmsley Turk).

                                      2) Old Woodcock, sire of the tap-root mare of Fam. 18. He
was probably identical with Woodcock No. 1.

                                      3) Davill's Old Woodcock, sire of the tap-root mare of Fam.
                                         19. This horse could be identical with Woodcock No. 1
                                         or No. 2, or both.

                                      4) D'Arcy's Woodcock, sire of Mad Darcy in 1719. Probably
                                         an altogether different horse.

There has to be some doubt that that there was a stallion called Darcy's Woodcock that was sired by Bustler. The following chart shows that the Woodcock mares that founded families 62, 18 and 19 were probably by the same Darcy's Woodcock.

It is possible that the Leedes Arabian mare was Sister to leedes, and her daughter by the Acaster Turk was a sister to Chaunter and a half sister to Betty Leedes. Betty Leedes was dam of Childers, Bartlett's Childers and the Devonshire Turk, all by Darley's Arabian and marked **. Bay Wilkinson and Partner were both by the same sire, Son of Snake alias Son of Jigg. Thunderbolt's dam by Snake was by the Snake alias Jigg, that sired Son of Snake alias Son of Jigg.

See DARCY'S YELLOW TURK, DARCY'S WHITE TURK AND HELMSLEY TURK for evidence that this Darcy's Woodcock was Dicky Pierson.

Darcy's Woodcock was the great great great grandsire of horses foaled in the 1720s. He is also said to have sired horses from 1716 to 1724 but this seems unlikely and it would appear that there was a younger stallion also known as Darcy's Woodcock.

Cheny's Racing Calendar for 1744, page xi in the index, says - "Bustler, which got the Grand-Dam of Windham, also got Blunderbuss and Old Merlin, the former of which got the Dam of Old Royal (Sire of Bald Charlotte) the latter got Woodcock, sire of Miss Tippet, and Castaway, which got the Dams of Bald Charlotte and Conqueror".

Cheny's Racing Calendar for 1744, page xxv in the index, says - "White Stockings was bred by Mr Crofts and got by Partner. His dam was got by Woodcock (Sire of the Dam of Sedbury) Son of Old Merlin, Son of Bustler, Son of the Helmsley Turk".

Pick's Turf Register, volume 1, page 69, says - "Badger was got by Mr. Crofts's Partner; his dam by Woodcock, (son of Merlin); grandam by Mr. Wastell's Turk ; great grandam by Mr. Wilkes's Hautboy ; great great grandam by Mr. Place's White Turk, Dodsworth, out of Mr. Layton's Violet Barb Mare".

According to this evidence the younger Woodcock was a son of Merlin and he sired foals from 1716 to 1724, but the only known Woodcock by Merlin, Raikes Fulthorpe's Woodcock, was foaled in 1715.

Pick's Turf Register, volume 1, page 18, says Old Merlin was sire of Mr. Bethell's Woodcock and Castaway, but Raikes Fulthorpe's Woodcock, who was own brother to Bethell's Castaway and who was bred by Hugh Bethell in 1715, was never known as Bethell's Woodcock.

According to Prior's The Royal Studs of the Sixteenth and Seventeenth Centuries, page 211, a gold cup presented by Queen Anne for the Royal Plate at Bramham Moor bears the inscription "Ruffler and Woodcock on Bramham Moor, 1705 and 1708".

Early Records of the Thoroughbred Horse, by C M Prior, page 147, says - "Another of his [Merlin's] sons, Woodcock, is stated in the General Stud-Book to have been foaled in 1715, but as Mr. Bethell, of Rise, whose ancestor owned the horse, has been kind enough to show the editor of these papers a very beautiful gold cup, presented by Queen Anne and bearing the Royal Arms, won by him at Bramham Moor in 1708, with his name engraved thereon, he was evidently born earlier than Castaway, possibly in 1703".

A note in The Family Tables of Racehorses, by Kazimierz Bobinski, volume 1, family 31, says - "it remains open to speculation whether Woodcock, foaled in 1715 (winner in 1721 of His Majesty's 100 gs. in specie at York and of a King's Plate at Lincoln, and owned by Mr. Raikes Fulthorpe) or Mr. Bethell's Woodcock (winner of Queen Anne's Gold Cup at Bramham Moor in 1708) is a brother to Mr. Bethell's Castaway".

It would appear from the evidence that Bethell's Woodcock and Raikes Fulthorpe's Woodcock were both by the same sire as Bethell's Castaway, with Bethell's Woodcock, foaled in 1702, being the stallion known as Darcy's Woodcock who sired foals from 1716 to 1724.

DAVILL'S WOODCOCK

According to the GSB, volume 1, 5th edition, page 223, Miss Doe, gr f 1728, was by Greyhound out of Brown Woodcock by Darcy's Woodcock out of Lusty Thornton by Croft's Bay Barb. Lusty Thornton was grandam of the Ancaster Starling. Miss Doe was owned by Mr Lambton and sent to Ireland as a broodmare.

Pick's Turf Register, volume 1, page 41, says - "Miss Doe (a Grey Mare) was bred by Mr Lampton, of Durham, and got by Old Greyhound; her dam by Davill's Woodcock, out of the grandam of the Duke of Ancaster's Starling". Page 42, says - "Miss Doe was sold into Ireland, and was a Brood-Mare in Sir Edward O'Brien's Stud, and was the dam of [his] Miss Doe, &c".

This is the only other reference to the stallion Davill's Woodcock. Pick's source for this information is not known but Brown Woodcock was bred by Mr Croft and was sired by Woodcock by Merlin.

The following advertisement makes it clear that Sedbury and Miss Doe were both out of mares by Woodcock by Merlin:

The Caledonian Mercury, Wednesday, May 22, 1765, says - "To Leap this season, at Mrs Duncan's, near to Priestfield, at One Guinea each mare, and One Shilling to the keeper, a fine chesnut stoned horse, called Tartar, nine years old, fifteen hands and a half high, able to carry 14 stone a hunting, and free of all natural blemishes.--His pedigree is as follows: Tartar was got by Ground Joy [Ground Ivy], his dam by the Hartley Roan Horse, got by Hip upon the dam of Babraham; his grand dam (bred by Lord Dorcey) by Woodcock sire of the dams of Sedbury, Miss Doe, and many others of note; his great grand-dam by the Darcey chesnut Arab, sire of Jews-trumps; his great great grand dam (Violet Leyton) by the Darcey White Turk, sire of Hautboy, Black Leggs, Royal, &c his Great great great grand dam by Dodsworth, the common ancestor of the Windam's Dimples, Starlings, Desdemona, Grey-hounds, Ticklepitchers, &c his great great great great grand dam by the Darcey Yellow Turk, sire of Brimmer, Spanker, &c so remarkable to future ages for their gets. The above is certified by Dom Browne, Esq; N B Good grass for mares, and proper care taken of them.--The money to be paid at the stable door".

TYRCONNEL BARB MARE

The Universal Advertiser, Tuesday, April 30, 1754. Number 153, says - "To be let to Mares this Season, at Eccles Vell, near Fentona, in the county of Tyrone, Mazard, alias Roger; he is a jet black, 15 hands and an inch high, and every way qualified to get officers horses, hunters, and running cattle; for the encouragement of breeders in that part of the world, he will be let at so small a price as 2 guineas each mare, and a crown to the groom, the money to be paid without distinction before the horse leaves the stable. He was remarkably fruitful last year, which was his first season: mr Eccles had 13 mares covered by him, which were all in foal; any mare that he covered last season, which has not a foal, shall be covered this year at half price, provided the mare is under 10 years old.—The following pedigree, certified by Sir Marmaduke Wyvill, will clearly shew what may be expected from a horse of his blood, size, strength and beauty.—This is to certify, that the black stone horse which I sold to mr Eccles, was bred by me, and now rises 9 years old the next grass; he was got by my Scarborough colt, his dam by Belgrade the 2d, his grandam by Old Tifter, his great grandam by Lord Darcey’s Woodcock, his great great grandam by Lord Darcey’s Chesnut Arabian, his great great great grandam by Blunderbuss, out of a natural Barb mare, which was dam to the famous Makeless. Scarborough colt was a son of my Old Scarborough mare and Old Tifter; he won the great stakes at Richmond when 5 years old, and the King’s plate at Leith when 6; and got the dam of Antelope, and many excellent horses. Belgrade the 2d, was the sire of Volunteer, Bashaw, Garnet, Primate and Antelope. Woodcock got the famous Diana mare, and many others of great note; he was son of Old Merlin and Tyrconnel Barb mare. The Chesnut Arabian above mentioned, got Jews-trump, and mr Bethell’s Royal. Blunderbuss was one of the most noted stallions of his Time, and to this day his blood is as much valued as any in England. The above account is true, witness my hand, / Marmaduke Wyvill".

The Stamford Mercury, Thursday, March 26, 1778, Number 2456, says - "The noted Horse Spot, (The Property of Samuel Siddall, of Bourn,) will Cover this Season, at One guinea a Mare. Spot was bred by the late Edm. Turner, Esq; of Stoke near Grantham, and his pedigree is as follows: He was got by Blank, his dam by old Regulus, his Grandam by old Royal, Sire of Capt. Appleyard’s bald Charlotte, his great Grandam by Mr Curven’s grey Barb, his great great Grandam by Mr Curven’s bay Barb, Sire of Brocklesby Betty, and out of a Mare of Lord Lonsdale’s called the Tregonnel Mare, which Mare was bred by Mr Curven, and esteemed one of the highest Blood Mares Mr Curven had. The above Pedigree was taken from Mr Curven’s Stud Book, by the late Charles Pelham, Esq; of Brocklesby".

The Kentish Gazette, Saturday, May 6, 1780, Number 1199, says - "Trimmer Will Cover this Season, 1780, At Thomas Winter's, Colt-breaker, at Hythe, At Two Guineas a Mare, and Five Shillings the Man. He is fifteen Hands and a Half high, Master of sixteen Stone, and free from Blemish. - Trimmer was got by Mr. Turner's Spot ; Spot was got by Blank ; his Dam by Regulus ; his Grandam by Royal, who was the Sire of Captain Appleyard's Bald Charlotte ; his Great Grandam by Mr. Curwen's Grey Barb ; his Great Great Grandam by Mr. Curwen's Bay Barb, sire of Brocklesby's Betty, and out of a Mare of Lord Lonsdale's, called the Tyrconnel Mare, which Mare was bred by Mr. Curwen, and esteemed one of the best Mares he had. The above Pedigree was taken from Mr. Curwen's own books by Charles Pelham, Esq; of Brocklesby. His Dam by Sportsman ; his Grandam by Cullen ; his Great Grandam by Rib ; his Great Great Grandam by Partner. The above Horse was bred by J. Warren, Esq; of Stapleford. Trimmer never started but three Times, and won easy each Time, and was then lamed. Good Grass for Mares at 2s. 6d. per Week, and the utmost Care taken of them".
