Family 11 - Early Generations

Family 11 descends to the present through 2 daughters of a sister to Regulus: Coquette and a grey mare by Snap.

Sister to Regulus
Credible contemporary sources omit the Snake cross from her pedigree.

Her pedigree is given in GSB as "By the Godolphin Arabian; Grey Robinson, by the Bald Galloway; Snake; Old Wilkes, by Old Hautboy".

This mare has had an entry in GSB since the introductory volume of 1791. The name of her breeder (Ld Chedworth) and her foaling year of 1743 were added in 1793. Her list of produce initially consisted of all but one of her foals for Ld Bolingbroke and two others. In 1793, this list was augmented by the addition of another of Ld Bolingbroke's foals, two foals for Mr Dutton, and two more late foals for Mr Conolly and Mr Fox. In 1808, after the Dutton stud records had been sent by Ld Sherborne to Weatherby's for comparison, two more Dutton foals and notes as to years the mare was barren were added to her record. A final addition to her list of produce was made in the edition of 1891.

Her pedigree was provided in the early editions by reference to Regulus's entry in Part 3. In 1891, her dam was given as Grey Robinson who herself had a new broodmare entry in Part One (a new section devoted to the earliest known mares "of their strains").

Records of the Dutton Stud (D678/1 F14/5/6; Gloucestershire Record Office) give the pedigree of the sister to Regulus as follows:

Regulus’s Sister
A grey Mare got by the Earl of Godolphins Arabian, Her Dam by the Balled Galloway her grandam was a mare of Mr Wilks’s, got by Hautboy out of a full sister of Plowmans
Four Years old 1747
The above Pedigree was taken out of Ld Chedworth’s Studd Book.

Her produce record in the Dutton Stud:
The Mare described on the preceeding page was Covered in May 1747 by Hobgoblin She foaled the 14th of April 1748 a Brown Grey Filly with a feathered Star & the off foot behind white.
She was covered in May 1748 by Hazard Did not prove in foal
She was covered in May 1749 by Young Lamprey did not prove in foal
She was Covered in 1750 by Spinner She foaled a filly which was drowned. 1751
She was Covered in 1751 by Squirt Did not prove in foal
She was Covered in 1752 by Rib She foaled a Grey Colt without any Mark 1753 / Juggler
She was Covered in 1753 by White Spot She foaled a Grey Filly 1754
She was Covered by King Pepin in 1754 She foaled a Chesnut filly with a balled face & Three white Legs in May 1755
She was Covered by King Pepin in 1755

Note that the pedigree given for this mare, taken from her breeder's studbook, does not include a Snake cross.

It is possible that the match mentioned in Cheny 1744 (to be run at Newmarket in 1748) was made for the sister to Regulus.

In the Spring Meeting, the Duke of Beaufort's Chesnut Filly, out of His Grace's Partner Mare and Roundhead, against Mr. Dutton's Grey Filly, got by the Godolphin Arabian. 8 st. 10 l. 4 m. 100 Guineas. Half-forfeit.

This match was not listed in later years of Cheny's calendars, and no record of its having been run or forfeit paid suggests that it was declared "off by consent" before 1745.

Bald Galloway Mare (GREY ROBINSON in GSB)
Credible contemporary sources omit the Snake cross from her pedigree.

As mentioned above, this mare did not have a broodmare entry until the 1891 edition of GSB, where she is shown with two produce, Regulus and his sister. She is said to have been bred by Mr Robinson, in 1723, got by Bald Galloway, out of a sister to Old Country Wench, by Snake.

This mare also appears in the Dutton records in a section beginning on p 120 entitled "The Mares which follow are my own" (evidently Sir John Dutton's).

121
The Grey Mare given me by my Lord Chedworth 30th April 1742

She was got by the Balled Galloway
Vide page 3d
Her Dam was a Mare of Mr Wilks’s got by Hautboy out of a full Sister of Plowman’s. Regulus’s Sister

122
The Mare described on ye other side wa[s] Cover’d ye 20 May 1742 & ye 5 June 1742 by ye Earl of Godolphin’s Arabian

And on page 133 a pedigree is included which was provided by Mr Wilks (the person who bred the dam of grey mare).

The following is the one sent by the Person that bred her Dam Regulus’s Dam
The old Grey mare was got by the Balled Galloway, her Dam was out of famous Old Wilks who was got by Hautboy, & bred by Mr Wilks from a White Turk & a Sedbury Mare. Recd 1742 from Mr Wilks

Possibly Mr Wilks omitted a cross in this pedigree; since it literally reads:

grey mare (Regulus's dam) by the Bald Galloway; her dam by _____; out of famous old Wilks, by Hautboy. Hautboy by a White Turk, out of a Sedbury Mare.

On the other hand, the pedigree taken from Ld Chedworth's Stud Book also does not include a Snake cross.

An alternative reading is suggested by the observation that it is not uncommon to encounter in 18th century pedigrees, the phrase "out of" immediately followed by the name of the sire. In which case the dam of Regulus and his sister would be a mare by Old Wilks (Son of Hautboy).

The earliest pedigrees for Regulus also omitted any mention of Snake (see Cheny 1745, for instance):

Mr Martindale's Sweet-lips is the Horse afterwards called Regulus; he was bred by the late Lord Chedworth, out of a Daughter of the Bald Galloway, and the Godolphin Arabian; his Grand Dam was a Mare of the late Mr Wilks's (which own'd Old Hautboy in the Time of his being a Stallion:) his Great Grand Dam was the Pet Mare of Miss Darcy's, Daughter of one of the Sedbury Royal Mares.

There is also an advertisement for another offspring of this mare, which provides information that Grey Robinson had additional foals.

Jackson’s Oxford Journal Saturday, March 3, 1759. / Numb. 305.
To COVER this Season, At Mr Richard White’s at the King’s-Arms in Didmarton, Glocestershire, At One Guinea a Mare, and Half a Crown the Servant, A Beautiful Strong Grey HORSE, NEAR fifteen Hands high, and Master of any Weight, bred by Mr William Howe, and got by the late Duke of Devonshire’s Second, who was a Son of Childer’s, and full Brother to Black Legs, Snip, Puff, Bay Motte. The Grey Horse’s Dam was the noted Mare, Called Grey Robinson, and was also the Dam of Mr Martindale’s Regulus, Mr Dyer’s Frolick, and several other running Horses. She was got by the Bald Galloway, her Dam by Old Hautboy, out of a full Sister to Sir John Parson’s Plowman. As the Pedigree of Regulus, and the Horses of his gett, are so frequently published in the Horse-Race Papers, it is thought needless to mention any more of his Pedigree.
This is a true Pedigree, as witness my Hand, W HOWE.

This pedigree also omits the Snake cross, and is certified by W Howe, believed to have been the brother of the second Lord Chedworth.

Advertisements for Bald Partner, beginning in 1753, and for Young Red Cap in 1765 refer to the Robinson Hautboy Mare, bred by Mr Wilks, as the "the Dam of the Dam of Regulus, and the Dam of the Dam of the Metcalf, Lady Caroline and Lady Betty, &c."

In 1749, the pedigree of Regulus began to be given in the form that was entered in GSB (the following from Cheny's calendar for 1749):

At Theakston, near Bedal, Yorkshire, the famous Bay Horse called Regulus, at three Guineas a Mare, and half a Crown the Servant. He was bred by the late Lord Chedworth, and got by the Godolphin Arabian, Sire of Lath, Cade, Dismal, Dormouse, Slug, Babram, Bajazet, &c. his Dam was the noted Mare called Grey Robinson, she was got by the Ball'd Galloway, his Grand Dam was got by Old Snake, and his Great Grand Dam was the famous Mare called Old Wilks, bred by Mr. Wilks, and got by Old Hautboy. He is no more than ten Years old this Grass, full fifteen Hands high of great Justness of Shape, Beauty and Strength, and as much Master of high Weights in running, as any Horse in the Kingdom ; he started only for nine Prizes, and won them all, and was never beat ; the first of the said Prizes was fifty Pounds, the other eight were all King's Plates, a hundred Guineas each.

Of note, by the time Regulus began to race for Mr Martindale in 1749, his breeder (Lord Chedworth) was dead, and none of the surviving Regulus pedigrees included a breeders certificate to vouch for the pedigree.

In 1747 and 1749 pedigrees for two of the best runners of their years, Shock and Squirt, were publicized, their dam being a mare by Snake, dam by Hautboy.

Ipswich Journal. Saturday, April 11. 1747. No. 426
Now in the Hands of Amos Alexander in Toftmonks near Beccles in Suffolk,
TWO STALLIONS to Cover Mares at Half a Guinea each, and One Shilling the Man; the Money all to be paid down at Covering, otherwise none shall be covered; except that such as were Cover’d by the Black Horse, and were not season’d, are welcome to this Season also. One is a Beautiful Strong Brown Horse well known by the Name of SHOCK, was breed [sic] by Mr Robinson in Yorkshire, and got by Jigg, from a Snake Mare full Sister to Egerton’s Country wench, and from Old Wilks who was got by Hautboy. This said SHOCK won 275 Guineas (called the October Stakes) at Newmarket, when the Nine following started against him, viz Lord Gower’s Horse Spider, Duke of Somerset’s Horse Chance, Duke of Devonshire’s Horse Spot, Mr Honeywood’s Grey Horse, Lord Viscount Middleton’s Horse Sophy, Sir Michael Newton’s Mare Miss Parrot, Duke of Bolton’s Horse Hackney, Earl of Halifax’s Bay Gelding, and Mr Wm Wynne’s Chesnut Gelding. And likewise he run a Match for 200 guineas against the Earl of Portmore’s sootty Dun, which he won also; and afterwards this said Shock was sold for 300 Guineas for a Tryal Horse. The other is a beautiful Black strong Horse, well mark’d, Five Years old, fit for Hunting or the Road, and Master of 16 or 18 Stone Weight, and walks, trots, gallops, and leaps well; which I think there is not one Horse in Suffolk or Norfolk can beat him at the aforementioned Four Exercises.

Newcastle Journal. Saturday, March 4. 1749. No 517.
To LEAP this SEASON, At Mr Richard March’s, in Bellerby, near Richmond in Yorkshire, at one Guinea a Mare, and a Shilling to the Servant. THE beautiful HORSE called SQUIRT, which was the Rt Hon. the Earl of Portmore’s. There is no better bred Horse, and is in high Form, sound in wind and Limb, and clear of all natural Blemishes. Squirt was bred by William Metcalf, Esq; and got by Childers; and his dam was the said ‘Squire’s famous old Mare; which was the Dam of the Horse called Shock, his Horse Partner, the Horse called Gay, and the Earl of Portmore’s Lady Caroline and Lady Betty. Squirt is brother to Lady Caroline. Squirt’s Dam was got by Easby Snake, and out of the well-known Mare called Grey Wilks; Grey Wilks was Sister to Clumsey, that got the Earl of Portmore’s Fox. Squirt run at New-market for the great Stakes, and was Second to the Duke of Devonshire’s Larth, when ten run, after he beat Larth at 12 Stone Weight. Squirt won a Match against Lord Lonsdale, and another against the Duke of Bridgewater; also Stamford, Epsom, Salisbury, and Winchester Plates. The earl run him no more.

The above evidence, from the records of the breeders and owners of the sister to Regulus, her dam and grandam, strongly suggests that the dam of Grey Robinson was not a Snake mare, but was the Robinson Hautboy Mare. It also appears that the Snake cross now found in the pedigree of Regulus first appeared after two sons of the Metcalfe Snake mare (produce of the Robinson Hautboy mare) rose to prominence.

Snake Mare
As noted above, evidence from the records of Ld Chedworth and Mr Wilks suggests that this mare was not grandam of Regulus and his sister, and that she only appeared in the pedigree of Regulus after her produce began to be famous.

She was first entered in 1791:

SNAKE MARE, Her dam by Hautboy.
1729 b c Shock, by Jigg … Mr Howe
f by Jigg (dam of the D of Ancaster's Dart) …
1732 ch c Squirt, by Bartlet’s Childers … Ld Portmore
1734 ch c Gay, by Bethell’s Arabian … Mr Metcalfe
1739 ch f Lady Caroline, by Childers … Mr Metcalfe
1740 b f Lady Betty, by the Devonshire Blacklegs … Mr Metcalfe
f by Lath (dam of Mr Conolly's Richmond) … Mr Metcalfe
1744 ch f by Roundhead … Ld March

In the 1793 edition, Mr Cornwall's Brown Russet (1738) br c by the Lonsdale Bay Arabian was added to her list of produce, and her pedigree revised to read:

Her dam, Grey Wilkes, sister to Clumsey, by Hautboy, out of Miss D'Arcy's Pet Mare, a daughter of a Sedbury Royal Mare.

In the 1803 edition, her pedigree remained the same, although she was now said to have been foaled in 1712, and bred by Mr ROBINSON. Her list of produce was further expanded to include Mr Egerton's Nanny (1724) gr f by the Pigot Turk and Grey Robinson, by the Bald Galloway; neither of these sires was known to be grey.

By the 1808 edition, Mr Egerton's records must have become available to the editor(s) and it was recognized that the 1712 foaling date and daughter Nanny "belonged" to the mare called Old Country Wench, who was given her own broodmare entry in GSB. The un-named Snake mare was now identified as "sister to Old Country Wench" and Mr Howe's Foxhunter (1722) ch c by the Bald Galloway was added to her list of produce. However, Cheny's racing calendars show that Mr Howe's Foxhunter (raced 1728-1730) was sometimes identified as a grey horse. He may have been another produce of the grey Robinson Hautboy mare, rather than of the sister to Old Country Wench.

Hautboy Mare (GREY WILKES) - The "Robinson Hautboy Mare"
This mare had a new entry in the 1891 edition of GSB:

GREY WILKES (sometimes OLD WILKES, sister to Clumsey), Bred by Mr WILKES, got by Old Hautboy, out of Miss Betty Darcy's Pet Mare, which was out of a Sedbury Royal Mare.

In addition to Old Country Wench and her sister, her list of produce includes a mare by Bustard (dam, in 1723, of Mr Robinson's ch c Robinson Crusoe, by Jigg) and Whimsey, foaled 1722, by a Son of Jigg.

Robinson Crusoe was first included in 1791 in Part II containing pedigrees of horses and mares of note, not included in the former Part:

Robinson Crusoe, Mr Robinson, 1723, Got by Jigg, his dam, Bastard, out of Old Wilkes, a daughter of Old Hautboy.

A contemporary advertisement for Robinson Crusoe (Newcastle Courant. Saturday, February 19. 1731-2. Numb. 356.) gives a different pedigree:

He was got by Jigg, out of a spark Mare, which was from a snake Mare, the full Sister to the famous Egerston’s Mare (Country Wench) which said snake Mare was out of a Hautboy Mare, bought of Mr Wilks, her Dam being a pett Filley Mr Wilks bought of Mrs Betty D’arcy, which was a Foal of her Brother’s Mr Christopher D’arcy’s, out of a Royal Mare, Mr Robinson sold said Robinson Crusoe to Charles Bathurst, Esq;…

Robinson Crusoe's original pedigree in GSB is evidently based on information from Cheny's racing calendars, where in the annual for 1743, his dam was said to have been "called Bastard" and "descended from a noted Mare called Old Wilks, which was bred by the late Mr. Wilks of Yorkshire, out of a Darcy or Sedbury Mare and Old Hautboy." In the annuals for 1744 and 1745, Mr Cheny said Robinson Crusoe "was bred by Mr. Robinson of Richmond, Yorkshire, out of a Grandaughter of an Eminent Mare called Old Wilks, which was bred in the Darcy Family, and got by the said Mr. Wilks's Old Hautboy."

Whimsey was first entered as a broodmare in the 1808 edition:

WHIMSEY, Bred by Mr ROBINSON, foaled in 1722, got by a Son of Jig, out of Grey Wilkes, great grand dam of Regulus.

Whimsey was described in an advertisement for her g grandson Young Forester (Chester Chronicle Or Commercial Intelligencer / Friday, April 18, 1777 / Issue 104.) as "bred by Lord Molineux, got by a son of Jigg, and out of a favourite mare of Mr Robinson’s, in Yorkshire; which mare he on his death-bed ordered his son not to part with, but the son breaking his neck at a horse-race, the Stud was disposed of, and this favourite mare, with Whimsey in her belly, purchased for Lord Molineux."

Miss Betty Darcy's Pet Mare
She had her first broodmare entry in the 1891 edition. In this, the editor said she was "The property of Miss Betty Darcy. She was the daughter either of Grey Royal or of a Sedbury Royal Mare. The sire is not given in any pedigree, and probably the cover was abroad, as this is the only case in which the sire is not given." She is shown as dam of 3 grey foals by Hautboy: Mr Wilkes' Clumsey, Mr Robinson's Grey Wilkes (or Wilkes Old Mare) and Sir J Parsons' The Old Wen mare (dam of a c by the Curwen Bay Barb).

In contrast to the above entry, the advertisement for Robinson Crusoe, provides details not included in the GSB entry: the "pett Filley" was purchased by Mr Wilks from Betty D'arcy; the foal had been her brother's Mr Christopher's, leading to the supposition that her dam was Christopher D'Arcy's Royal Mare; the characterization of the filly as a "pet" suggests that she had been raised by hand and may have been an orphan. Further, advertisements in the Newcastle Courant from 1732 and 1734 for Bridgwater's Horse, (young) Brisk (sire of the Gardiner's mare Favourite, who won 6 King's Plates) may supply the sire of the Pet Mare. Brisk's dam was stated to have been bred by Mr Wilks, and got by old Hautboy; out of the dam of Mr Wilk's Spot, by old Bustler; her dam one of Ld Darcy's Royal Mares. So, if Mr Wilks owned only one mare out of a Darcy Royal Mare, then, it looks as if his Bustler mare could be the same as the mare acquired from Miss Betty Darcy.

Christopher Darcy's Royal Mare
This mare is not identified in GSB as dam of Miss Betty Darcy's Pet Mare; she had her first broodmare entry in the 1891 edition:

ROYAL MARE (Kitt Darcy's), Bred by Lord DARCY, got by Blunderbuss, her day, Old Grey Royal, by Darcy White Turk.

This entry appears to have been taken from Mr Hartley's manuscripts (which evidently were newly available to GSB in 1891), and probably derived from the pedigree of his Blind Horse. The dam of Hartley's Blind Horse was Sir Ralph Milbank's famous mare black Makeless mare, her dam given as Darcy's Royal Mare, by Blunderbuss, out of Old Grey Royal, by The Darcy White Turk.

However, this pedigree is contradicted by two certificates for Creeper, a mare bought by Mr Routh from Ld Darcy (see Mr Routh's records, published by C M Prior in Early Records of the Thoroughbred Horse, 1924). In these certificates, James D'arcy said that the Makeless mare (Creeper's grandam) was out of Blunderbush Royall (by Blunderbuss, dam by the White Turk, out of Darcy's own Gray Royall) and that this Makeless mare was half sister to the Black Royal Mare sold to Sir Ralph Milbank, both being got by Makeless. The Creeper certificates are confusingly written and if Mr Hartley had received something similar from Ld Darcy, he may have entered an incorrect pedigree in his records. Unfortunately, James Darcy did not give any further information about the descent of Sir Ralph's mare, so all that is known from these two certificates is that her dam was NOT (as given in GSB) the mare by Blunderbuss; White Turk - Darcy's own Grey Royal. In a paper sent to Ld Rockingham in 1754, by Mr Hartley (WWM/R193/45; Sheffield Archives) Mr Hartley said the dam of his Blind Horse "was got by Makeless her Dam by Old Royal." This "old Royal" may not have been a proper name, and was too early to have been Old Royal (sire of Bald Charlotte).

Christopher (Kit) Darcy was a younger brother of James Darcy the Younger. In 1665, Dugdale's Visitation recorded the Darcy family of Richmond; it included James Darcy of Richmond, Esq; aet 44, younger son of Conyers, Ld Darcy and Conyers, and brother to the then-living Conyers, Ld Darcy and Conyers. This James was married to Isabell, daughter of Sir Marmaduke Wyvill, of Constable Burton, Kt and Bt, and among his 6 children were James, aet 15, Christopher, aet 12, and Elizabeth. About 1684, Sir Marmaduke Wyvill of Constable Burton consented to the sale of Sedbury (Manor) by his father Sir William Wyvill, to his cousin Christopher Darcy. James Darcy appears not to have become involved with Sedbury until about 1690 when he took away materials from Witton Castle for use at Sedbury. So it is likely that between 1684 and 1690 Kit Darcy was the person principally involved with breeding and selling horses at Sedbury. A letter written by James Darcy in 1684 mentions a mare sold by Kit to Sir John Lowther "she was got with the old Chesnut Turk, and under an old mare which they sold White Clarke, which is as well bred as any mare almost at Sedbury" and the "King has a horse that's brother to her, both by horse and mare (C M Prior, The Royal Studs of the Sixteenth and Seventeenth Centuries, 1935). Perhaps Kit Darcy’s Royal Mare dates to this period.

The only other mare linked to Christopher Darcy in surviving records is found in the pedigree of Tarquin. The pedigree of Tarquin's dam was given in advertisements for Tarquin as by the Scarborough Colt; Hip; Tifter; Snake; Diamond; Hautboy - a Mare which Sir John Jennings had of old Kitt Darcy, and "much valued." Lord Rockingham's records, supply more information about Tarquin's dam, called in Sir Marmaduke Wyvill's records the Spectacle Mare (WWM/193/34a; Sheffield Archives), taken from Brown's Copy of Sr M: Wyvills Stud Book:

Pedigree of the Spectacle Mare - dam of Tarquin - Hill Forsters now Sr Ralph Gores Stallion & also dam of my Godolphin Hunter
The Spectacle Mare - was got by ye Scarborough Colt - her dam by the Pelham Tifter (Sire also of ye Garnet Mare) - her G: dam (the Snake Mare) was got by Old Tifter, her Gt: G: dam by Snake Gt: Gt: G: dam by Pooley's Diamond, her Gt: Gt: Gt: G: dam by Hautboy, her Gt: Gt: Gt: Gt: G: dam by Bustler, her Gt: Gt: Gt: Gt: Gt: G: dam by Old Woodcock out of one of Sr Jonathan Jenning's Mares; which Mare was of the Royal Kind at Sedbury.
N B was foaled Apr ye 4th 1747. Bay Colt off hind foot white

Of interest are the successive crosses of Hautboy and Bustler, raising the possibility that Kit Darcy's Royal Mare was by Woodcock.

Christopher Darcy’s Royal Mare is also regarded as the founder of family 13. MtDNA testing to date is consistent with the historical evidence, in that most tested members of families 11 and 13 have the same haplotype.
