It was Henry F Euren who first stated that Jenkinson's Fireaway H201 was by Driver H187 but he gives no evidence for this assertion. The old stallion cards of the descendants of Jenkinson's Fireaway H201 make no mention of his sire, although most of them state that his dam was by Joseph Andrews. There is, however, a stallion card for Pride of the Isle, who travelled the northwest corner of Lincolnshire in the 1860s, which gives a very complete record of his breeding, the end part of which reads - "Gt. gt. grandsire Old Fireaway, the property of Mr. R. West, Gaywood, Norfolk: Gt. gt. [gt.] grandsire Pretender from whose stock the original Fireaway descended. Pretender was a Chestnut foaled in 1771, by Marske, the sire of Eclipse; his dam by Bajazet, the son of the Godolphin Arabian".
There is, as far as I know, no doubt that West's Fireaway H203 was a son of Jenkinson's Fireaway H201, so it would appear from the above that the "Old Fireaway, the property of Mr West" was Jenkinson's Fireaway H201, a son of Lord Abingdon's Pretender.
The following entry appears in the Stud Book Trotteur Francais, volume 1, page 39:
"Old Phoenomenon (1/2 s. anglais) par The Norfolk Cob.

This line is identified as :
Old Phoenomenon = Bond's Norfolk Phenomenon H522
The Norfolk Cob = Wright and Goold's Norfolk Cob H475
Old Wildfire = Burgess' Fireaway alias Kirby's Wildfire H208
Y. Fire Away = West's Fireaway H203
Old Fire Away = Jenkinson's Fireaway H201
An advertisement in the Stamford Mercury of Friday, March 19, 1819, page 4, column 2, says - "Fireaway, The property of P. Emmitt, Hemingby. He was got by Mr. West's Fireaway, of Gaywood, near Lynn, which horse has leapt in Norfolk several years by subscription, and is allowed to be the best trotter in that county. Mr. West's Fireaway, by Mr. Jenkinson's noted horse Pretender (formerly Fireaway), covered in London at 5guineas a mare, and was allowed by judges to be one of the first of the hackney kind in the kingdom".
The following advertisement appeared in the Virginia Herald of Friday, March 11, 1803, page 4, column 4 - "The Beautiful Horse Young Pretender, was imported by the subscriber from London, and will cover Mares the ensuing season, at his plantation near Mr. Richard Too's tavern in Spotsylvania county agreeable to the following prices; - Ten Dollars for the season, Five Dollars for a single leap (if paid at the time of covering, if not the price of a whole season will be demanded) and Five Pounds for insurance. The season will commence on the first of April, and terminate on the first of August. Pedigree Young Pretender was got by Mr. Jenkinson's famous horse Pretender, his sire by Lord Abingdon's celebrated running horse Old Pretender, that beat the famous imported and well known racer Old Shark, over the Bacon [Beacon] course at Newmarket for 1000 guineas; his grandsire by old Mask, the sire of Shark, the much famed old Eclipse, &c. - His dam was got by Hyder Alley, this horse was the property of Christopher Blake esq and stood at Grange, near Wakefield, in the county of York, at ten guineas the season, and five shillings to the groom for each mare. - Hyder Ally, was got by old Blank, his dam by Regulus, his grandam was the much celebrated old Mexbury mare, the property of the late lord Chedworth, she was the dam of Mab, Phoenix, and Sophia, and got by a full brother to the Curwin Mexbury; Mexbury was got by the Curwin bay Barb, and own brother to the dam of old Partner. Young Pretender is a beautiful blood bay, five feet three inches high, rising four years old [foaled 1799], remarkable for strength; his action and form inferior to no horse on the continent. Daniel Hyde".
The following letter appeared in the American Turf Register and Sporting Magazine of November, 1832, vol 4, no 3, page 157 - "The Imported Horse Pretender. Spotsylvania, Oct. 1, 1832. Pretender was got by Jinkinson's Old Pretender, he was first called Fireaway; was a celebrated roadster and trotter; he won many trotting matches on the flat country of Norfolk and Lincolnshire fens, at the rate of sixteen miles an hour. The dam of Young Pretender was an excellent hunter, the property of the Rev. Mr. Pennington, of Alford, in Lincolnshire, of whom I bought him, a two year old colt. I brought him along with Tupp to this country in the fall of 1801. I broke him the fall that he was two years old, and travelled him from Lincolnshire to London, where I shipped him for Norfolk, Va. from thence I travelled him to Mr. Daniel Hyde's farm to whom I sold him. Mr. Hyde being a well informed good man, kept him among the great farmers over the ridge, some years, where he did good among the Dutch mares and to his owner. He was always a healthy sound horse, and an excellent trotter. Wm Smalley".

Wroot's Pretender H596 was sold at public auction in 1806 at Long Sutton, Lincolnshire and the advertisement for the sale in the Norwich Mercury of February 15, 1806, says - "He was got by Mr. Jenkinson's Fireaway, dam by Joseph Andrews".
According to Henry F Euren, Hackney Stud Book, volume 1, introduction, page 60, Wroot's Pretender H596 was first known as Young Pretender.
John Lawrence, who had knowledge of this horse for some years before the auction, in The History and Delineation of the Horse in all his Varieties, published in 1809, pages 172 and 173, says - "Pretender, a son of Cub, was out of a well-bred daughter of Lord Abingdon's Pretender, by Marske. Pretender, by Cub, I was informed, without being compelled to believe the fact, trotted a mile in two minutes and a half. He was a successful stallion, and exclusive of the consideration of fast trotting, the Fen country has, from the above sources, produced the most active, strongest and best-shaped road stock, to be found in this kingdom".
An advertisement in The Times, Friday, March 29, 1793, Issue 2571, page 4, says - "Horse to be sold, and a Stalion to Cover, at Jenkinson’s Stables, at the Rhedarium, Park-street, Grosvenor-square, that beautiful well-bred Horse, Useful Cub, alias, Young Pretender, (for the last Season in Town,) at Five Guineas a Mare; He is a certain Foal-getter, and for Shape and Action, as a Nag, not to be equaled by any. He is allowed to be the fastest Trotter in the kingdom, and the best Stock-getter, several of which are to be seen in the first Noblemen’s Stables. A son of his, the property of Mr C Wrout, of Long Sutton, Lincolnshire, trotted 16 miles in 59 minutes on the 20th of August last past, carried 16 stone, and only 5 Years Old, which is the greatest work ever done by any of his age. Good Grass is provided for Mares, with proper Care. N B Several capital Hackneys to be sold, some of which were got by the above Horse, seasoned Gig Horses, Curricle and Phaeton Horses, &c and several Pairs of very capital Coach Horses, now on Jobs, will be sold without Reserve; as the above T Jenkinson is declining that Business".
This advertisement, which throws yet another Pretender into the mix, confirms that Wroot's Pretender H596 was sired by Useful Cub and he was foaled in 1787.
A footnote to the entry of Wroot's Pretender H596 in the Hackney Stud Book, volume 1, page 231, says - "The dam of Wroot's Pretender also the dam of Allenby's Atlas, and sister to Clifton's Old Statesman and Allenby's Diana". This was taken from an advertisement of rounds from when the horse was young which says he was - "got by Jenkinson's Fireaway, out of a mare by Joseph Andrews (also the dam of Allenby's Atlas), sister to Mr. Clifton's Old Statesman, and Mr. Allenby's Diana, both excellent racers".
The following entry appears in the General Stud Book, volume 1, 5th edition, page 95:
GOLIAH MARE (sister to Allanby's Diana), 1758 ch. c. Statesman, by Sultan - - Mr Allanby 1761 ch. c. Young Statesman, by ditto - - Mr Clifton 1768 b. f. by ditto - - - Mr Vernon 1769 b. c. by ditto - - - Mr Wentworth This pedigree can be traced no further, but she has no descendants in the Stud Book
Mr Allenby's Statesman ran as Mr Clifton's and won many races on the flat, as did Mr Clifton's Young Statesman.
Mr Allenby's Diana, a chesnut filly by Trout's or Bolton Goliah, ran as a six year old in 1757 and was the sister to the dam of Clifton's Old Statesman, so cannot be the sister to the dam of Wroot's Pretender H596.
Mr Allenby's bay filly Diana ran as a four year old in 1768 and was probably the sister to Clifton's Old Statesman and the sister to the dam of Wroot's Pretender H596.
Mr Vernon's bay filly ran as Sister to Statesman as a three year old in 1771 and is the only mare on record that can possibly be the dam of Wroot's Pretender H596.
It would seem, however, from the above information, that the footnote to the entry for Wroot's Pretender H596 should read - "The GRANDAM of Wroot's Pretender also the dam of Allenby's Atlas, and sister to Clifton's Old Statesman and Allenby's Diana".
The following advertisement appeared in the Boston Independent Chronicle, April 18, 1794:
"Traveller, a full bloodied horse, 16 hands high, imported from England, was got by Redstreak: dam by Chaplin's Blacklegs: grandam by Allanby's noted Blind horse (own brother to Diana), which was got by Goliah which won seven King's Plates in one year. Charlestown, Mass. David Wood".

A stallion card for Young [Black] Harkaway by [Johnson's] Harkaway for the 1849 season says - "[Johnson's] Harkaway's dam by Hemswell ; grandam by Old Pretender, which trotted 16 miles within the hour, carrying 16 stone, beating Old Atlas ; Pretender's sire J. Jenkinson's Old Fireaway, which trotted 2 miles on the Oxford Road in 5 minutes, and was afterwards sold for 1000 Guineas ; his dam by Joseph Andrews".
The Old Pretender in this pedigree must be Jenkinson's Pretender, as the records show that the dam of Wroot's Pretender H596 was neither by, nor descended from, Joseph Andrews. Jenkinson's Pretender, though shown here as by Jenkinson's Fireaway, was in fact previously called Jenkinson's Fireaway and was sired by Lord Abingdon's Pretender. He was a famous celebrated trotter who won many trotting matches at the rate of sixteen miles an hour, the same rate recorded for Old Pretender when he beat Old [Allenby's] Atlas. It may be that Jenkinson's Fireaway was sold to Mr. R. West, Gaywood, Norfolk for 1000 guineas.
The History and Delineation of the Horse in all his Varieties, by John Lawrence, 1809, page 172, says - "and the best trotters which have appeared, and which are now to be found in Lincolnshire, Norfolk, and that vicinity, have proceeded from Old Sheilds [Shales]. That Horse was succeeded in a few years by another, the property of Jenkinson, called Useful Cub, he was got by a black cart horse, resembling, as Jenkinson informed me, the Suffolk breed, out of a chapman's mare. Much of the stock above-mentioned has been bred from this Horse. They were distinguished, in the first produce, by the round buttock and wide bosom of their cart-bred sire, and as I observed in many of them, speed was predominant ; but the stock was soon improved by crossing with racing blood".
John Lawrence also says - "When I was in Lincolnshire in 1770, old Schales was in the height of his reputation. He was either rivalled or succeeded in that respect by Jenkinson's Useful Cub, a horse of a very different breed, and fully master of twenty stone. In 1779 I trotted nearly a mile with this horse, and his speed (as I judged by my own hackney - a tried one) was above the rate of 20 miles an hour, though he carried 17 stone".
Blake's Farmer S174 , also known as Wallett's Farmer, was a foundation sire of the Suffolk Horse and was closely related to the dam of Wroot's Pretender H596. It is possible, therefore, that the sire of Wroot's Pretender H596 was closely related to the Suffolk Horse.

Page 153
"Horse 517. Sire of Elegant 386 and Useful 332, and the Dam of Rainbow 246. The property of Mr. West".
The evidence here points to Useful Y893, Useful Y894 and Useful C332 being the same horse and the chart below suggests that West's Useful Y893+894 C332 may be identical with Jenkinson's Useful Cub.
The name Useful Cub may be a corruption of Useful Cob, specifically a cob named Useful. The usual definition of a cob is 'a short-legged, stout variety of horse, usually ridden by heavy persons'. This is the perfect description of the produce of a cart horse resembling the Suffolk breed and a warm-blood mare. R S Summerhays in The Observer's Book of Horses and Ponies, 1968 edition, page 219, in the chapter on the Suffolk Horse, says - "With so admirable a foundation it is not surprising that efforts have been made by many to cross the Suffolk with Thoroughbreds and Arabs in the endeavour to evolve heavy-weight hunters and cobs. These attempts in general have met with varying success, as must always be the case where violent admixture of hot and cold blood is used as a first cross. None the less many good specimens have been produced which have from time to time evoked great enthusiasm".
A lesser known definition of a cob is "a horse not castrated". A cob is anything round and in the northern dialect of England a cob is a testicle, hence a cob, "a horse who has his cobs". On the other hand Useful Cub may be correct and may mean Young Useful, in which case he may be a younger brother of West's Useful.
The colour and breeding of West's Horse Y911 C517 are not recorded in either the Yorkshire Coach Horse Stud Book or the Cleveland Bay Stud Book, so it is not known if he could be described as a 'black cart horse'. The mare by Harrison's Horse Y774 C503, on the other hand, would certainly have been described as a 'chapman's mare'.

There are two different versions of the pedigree of Frost's Adonis H8 in volume 1 of the Hackney Stud Book. His entry on page 5 makes no mention of his sire but says he is out of a mare by Wroot's Pretender H596, while the entry for Wroot's Pretender H596 on page 231 lists him as his son. Both versions are impossible as Wroot's Pretender H596 was foaled in 1787 when Frost's Adonis H8 was four years old. It seems more likely that Lord Abingdon's Pretender, the sire of Jenkinson's Fireaway and maternal grandsire of Wroot's Pretender, was the sire of the dam of Frost's Adonis H8.
A footnote to the entry of Cobbin's Prickwillow H607 in the Hackney Stud Book, volume 1, page 236, says - "Worthy, the Sire of Flamingo, was a renowned Trotter, sired by Worthy by Pot-8-o's; his dam - reported to have trotted 2 miles in six minutes, and 18 miles in an hour - was by Lord Abingdon's Pretender"
An advertisement for two stallions to cover in Norfolk which appeared in the Norwich Mercury in April 1777 concerned "the two trotting horses called Useful Cubb and Hero, both being brothers" and was "Signed Thomas Jenkinson of Lutton, near Long Sutton in Lincolnshire, breeder of the above two horses".
The entry for Wright's Creeper H170 in the Hackney Stud Book, volume 1, page 68, says his sire was Wroot's Pretender H596 and his dam, who trotted two miles in six minutes on the road between Long Sutton and Wisbech, was by Hero. This Hero must have been the full brother to Useful Cub, the sire of Wroot's Pretender H596.

The name and breeding of the dam of Bay President Y922 are not recorded in the Yorkshire Coach Horse Stud Book, this information has been taken from The High Stepper, by Tom Ryder, 1979 edition, page 37. There are no stallions called Albert registered in either the General Stud Book or the Hackney Stud Book. There is, however, a stallion called Albert registered in the Yorkshire Coach Horse Stud Book, volume 1, page 4, as Albert 12, and in the Cleveland Bay Stud Book, volume 1, page 3, as Albert 6. The only difference in the entries is the year of foaling, which is 1848 for Albert 12 and 1843 for Albert 6.
An advertisement in the Yorkshire Gazette, Saturday, April 21, 1866, says - "At Old Thornville, Kirk Hammerton, Golden President will serve Mares at £2 2s. each, and 2s. 6d. the Groom. Golden President is by President Junior, by Bay President, dam by Young Lottery, gr.d. by Royalist, gr.g.d. by Woldsman. Golden President's dam was by Albert, gr.d. by the Duke, gr.g.d. by Woldsman. Golden President is a Chesnut Pony Hunter of very superior action and extraordinary beauty. He stands 14 hands 2 inches high, and is up to 14 stone. Any Person having a favourite Hackney or Pony Mare would do well to send it to this Horse. All Mares sent to stay with him will have the greatest attention paid to them, at the usual charges. Applications to be made to John Lye, Old Thornville, Kirk Hammerton, York".
It is possible that Golden President was full brother to Bay President Y922.
An advertisement in the Carlisle Journal, Saturday, March 7, 1840, says - "Stallion for Sale. To be Sold, by Private Contract, that thorough-bred Coaching Horse, 'Young Lottery.' He is a beautiful Bay, with Black Legs, stands 16½ hands high, and was got by that celebrated Horse, Monarch. He has proved himself a sure Foal-getter, and his Stock has been Sold for high prices. For Particulars, Pedigree, &c., apply to Mr. Robert James, Brampton Sands, the Owner. Brampton Sands, March 5th 1840".
All Cleveland Bays trace back in the male line to Skyrocket Y862 C280 through Sportsman C299. The pedigree of Skyrocket Y862 C280 is not recorded in either the Yorkshire Coach Horse Stud Book or the Cleveland Bay Stud Book. William Scarth Dixon in The Influence of Racing and the Thoroughbred upon Light Horse Breeding, page 51, says - "Perhaps no horse did more good in his day than a horse named Skyrocket, who was owned by Mr. Tommy Masterman of Nunthorpe, and who flourished in the early years of the nineteenth century, or perhaps a little earlier. He filled the country with good horses, and to celebrate his many good qualities Mr. Masterman's neighbours presented him [in 1820] with a silver cup worth five guineas [ten guineas according to the Yorkshire Coach Horse Stud Book, volume 1, page 221, and the Cleveland Bay Stud Book, volume 1, page 51] - no inconsiderable sum in those days. What would one not give for a look at that cup now? Skyrocket was also reproduced on ornamental tumblers, one of which I have in my possession. No pedigree of this horse remains that I am aware of, but the representation of him on the glass shows him to have been very blood-like in appearance - considerably more blood-like than the Cleveland Bay of that date, who was rather on strong lines. It seems by no means improbable then that this horse was by a thoroughbred, and it is certainly possible that that thoroughbred might be the son of the Snap mare [Skyrocket, 1786, by Highflyer]. It was a common plan in Yorkshire in those days to name a horse after his sire, especially if the sire was a famous horse and the son was kept for stud purposes. Of course this is mere surmise, but there seems some possibility of a foundation for it, and there is no doubt about the reputation of Mr. Masterman's horse as a sire, so it is perhaps worth a moment's idle speculation".
According to Major J Fairfax-Blakeborough, Skyrocket was by Skyscraper out of Brighton Belle by Mambrino. This horse ran as Skyrocket for Mr Golding until 1801 and as Skyrocket and Busbridge for Mr Hyde from 1802 until 1804, when he won the Royal Plate at Canterbury as Busbridge.
An advertisement in The Newcastle Courant, Saturday, February 6, 1836, Number 8412, says - "To Be Sold by Private Contract, A Coaching Stallion, six Years old. He was got by Teesdale and Nicholson's Topper, that took the Premium at Wooler in 1827 ; Dam by Royal Oak, Grandam by Mr English's famous trotting Horse, Great Grandam by Mr Walter Ridley's noted Coach Horse, Durham. Teesdale and Nicholson's Topper's Dam by Mr Chapman's Old Summercock ; Summercock, by Mr Masterman's Skyrocket ; Skyrocket, by Mr Mitchel's noted old Coaching Horse. Young Topper is a beautiful bay, clear of white, stands 16½ Hands high, is of great Bone and superior Action, is a sure Foal-getter, and his Stock particularly strong and handsome. Apply to Mr Millican, Coldmartin, near Wooler. 2nd February, 1836".
It is highly unlikely that Masterman's Skyrocket was by Skyrocket or Skyscraper, as neither of these sons of Highflyer would have been described as a 'noted old Coaching Horse'.

All Suffolk Cart Horses trace back in the male line to Crisp's Horse S404 through Sudbourne Beau-Brocade S4235 and they are all descended from the Norfolk Trotter and the Yorkshire Coach Horse through the stallion Barthropp's Hero S88.
The Hackney Stud Book, volume 1, pages 41 and 42, in the introduction, quoting an advertisement in the Norwich Mercury of April, 1772, says - "Goldfinder, chestnut, 3 years old, 15.3 hands high, bred by Thomas Giddings. He has a fine forehand, goes well on his legs as any colt whatever. Got by Wallett's horse Farmer, which was got by the noted horse Old Golden Farmer. Farmer's dam was got by a noted horse of Mr. Epworth's, which was a son of Goliah". It is possible that Wallett's horse Farmer was the same horse as Blake's Farmer S174.
The entry for Blake's Farmer S174 in the Suffolk Stud Book, volume 1, page 389, says he was chesnut, foaled about 1760, bred by Mr Garthsides and got by Wallett's Golden Farmer by Rigby's Fearnought. His dam by Eyven's Stud. Pick's Turf Register, volume 1, page 78, says Pamela was bred by Mr Garthside in 1740 and got by his Fearnought, son of Doctor, out of a daughter of Mr Darley's Manica. Pick's Turf Register, volume 1, page 473 says Sobersides was foaled in 1729 by Lord William Manners's Doctor, son of the Cyprus Arabian.
The Ipswich Journal, Saturday, April 6, 1765, Number 1366, says - "To Cover this Season, At Andrew Blake’s, in St Margaret’s Parish, Ipswich, at Twelve Shillings a Leap and Trial. The noted Bay Horse, call’d, Young Farmer, now rising eight Years old, full fifteen hands and an Inch high, and Master of any weight: He was bred by Mr Garthside in Lincolnshire, got by Mr Wallet’s famous Golden Farmer, Son of Rigsby’s Fearnought; his Dam by Mr Eyoon’s Studd, remarkable for Strength and Moving. He is very certain in getting Foals, and, as near as can be computed, there are upwards of 70 Mares with foal by him at this Time. Andrew Blake. N B All Gentlemen who had their Mares cover’d last Season by the aforesaid Horse, and are not with Foal, may have them covered this Season, at 7 s 6 d each, and the Trial of the Season as before".
The Ipswich Journal, Saturday, April 19, 1766, Number 1418, says - "To Cover this Season, At Andrew Blake’s, in the Parish of St Margaret, Ipswich, The Noted Horse Young Farmer, At 12 s a Mare, Leaps & Trials; and to hazard none, as ‘tis well known in the Neighbourhood he is very certain in getting Foals. Young Farmer was the Property of the late Mr W Garthsides of Lincolnshire, bred by Mr Garthsides; got by Mr Wallet’s famous Golden Farmer, Son of Rigsby’s Fearnought; his Dam by Mr Eyvon’s Stud, remarkable for Strength and moving: He is free from Blemishes, goes as well as any strong Horse in the County, and is allowed by good Judges to be a fine strong Hunter. There’s few able to perform with him either in the Field or upon the Road.—This is the third Season of Covering, & he has got as fine, promising, boney Colts, as any Horse whatever. The above Horse will be at Hadleigh on Mondays, at Woodbridge on Wednesdays, and sometimes at Saxmundham on Thursdays, and the other Part of the Week at Home".
Blake's Farmer was bay, foaled in 1757 and had his first foals in 1765.
The Ipswich Journal, Saturday, April 11, 1747, Number 426, says - "This is to give Notice, That the Famous Horse called Fearnought, is still in the Hands of Mr William Garthside, of Rigsby, near Alford in Lincolnshire; and by the Desire of Numbers of Gentlemen in the South, Covers this Season at Mr Abraham Wallett’s of Long-Sutton in the said County, at One Guinea a Mare, and One Shilling the Man. He was got by Doctor, whose Sire was the Duke of Rutland’s Cyprus, out of a Commoner Mare. His Dam was got by Oyster Foot, who was Son of the famous Merlin belonging to the late Duke of Ancaster, and out of a Leister Mare that was Sister to his Grace’s Black Legs, who broke his Leg when running against Fox at Lowes. He has also a Colt which comes four Years old, a Red Roan, got by Fearnought, and out of a Mare got by Mr Lister’s Ball, who was got by Mr Hall’s Arabian. He is full Fifteen hands high, and able to carry Eighteen stone, free from all Blemishes, and without dispute is as fine Horse as ever was bred in England, both for Shape and Action. He Covers at Rigsby near Alford this Season, at one Guinea the Mare, and One shilling the Man. N B Proper Joyce at both Places for Mares which come to stay".
The Stamford Mercury, Thursday, May 23, 1728, says - "This is to give Notice, That the Chesnut Horse calle'd Doctor, which was Mr Panton's, is now kept at the Warren Lodge in Grimsthorpe Park, and leaps for half a Guinea a Leap and Tryal. N B His Sire an Arabian [Cyprus], his Dam a Daughter of Old Commoner, out of a Makeless Mare [Chesnut Thornton], whose Dam was a Daughter of Brimmer [Old Thornton], out of a Mare got by Dicky Pearson, Son of Old Dodsworth's Barb, out of a Burton Barb Mare, as is certified under the Hand of the Breeder".
The Duke of Rutland may have purchased Cyprus from the Royal Stud at Hampton Court, where he was also known as the Chesnut Arabian and the Litten Arabian. The Royal Stud acquired him from the Duke of Devonshire's Stud, where he was known as the Chesnut Arabian and Cyprus. An inventory of the stud at Chatsworth taken on the death of the second Duke in 1729 included a three year old gelding and a five year old gelding, both by Cyprus. The Devonshire Chesnut Arabian was "own brother to Flying Childers, both by Mare and Horse". He was called Old Childers when he sired Tarran's Black Barb at Hampton Court.
According to the Suffolk Stud Book, volume 1, page 390, Winter's Stormer S1329 was owned by P Winter of Aldborough and was a bay foaled about 1786. The entry reads - "A trotting horse : his sire was Gooch's Stormer, a thoroughbred horse, own brother to Thunderbolt. He was advertised in 1789 to stand at Snape. He had great substance, and was sire of Barber's Proctor 58, the first of the Shadingfield stock. He was bred by Mr Winter, and was afterwards the property of Mr Gleed, of Dickleburgh Hall, in Norfolk".
The Ipswich Journal, Saturday, May 2, 1789, Number 3067, says - "P Wynter’s Bay Colt, Stormer, Will cover this season, at Mr Pallant’s, of Snape, at One Guinea and One Shilling. He is a beautiful Blood Bay, fifteen hands and a half high, rising three years old. Was got by Mr Gooch’s Horse Stormer; out of an excellent road mare, by Smoker. For symmetry, action, and temper, this Colt is allowed to be equal, if not superior, to any of his kind shewn in this country for many years. He will be at the Angel, Saxmundham, every Thursday; and at Snape the rest of the week during the season".
The Ipswich Journal, Saturday, April 10, 1790, Number 3115, says - "Young Stormer, Will cover this Season, at Mr H Welton’s, at Badingham, Suffolk, at One Guinea a leap, and One Shilling the groom, the money to be paid at the time of covering. This colt is 4 years old, 15 hands and a half high, and particularly strong made; he is a beautiful dark brown bay, and a very handsome figure; he was got by Old Stormer, a capital and well known hunter, his dam by the stock of Old Smoker, a capital hunter; this colt has been well proved this last hunting season; he is a promising trotter, and a capital bar and fence leaper, and has gained great merit from gentlemen sportsmen that have seen him proved. He will be at Halesworth market, on Tuesdays; Saxmundham, on Thursdays; Framlingham, on Saturdays; and the rest of the week at home".
The only Stormer in the GSB, volume 1, 5th edition, was foaled in 1774 by Goldfinder. Knight's Stormer H806 was foaled in 1803 by Gooch's Stormer, but this Gooch's Stormer is not identified as a Thoroughbred in the Hackney Stud Book and would seem more likely to have been a son of the Stormer by Goldfinder, who would have been 28 when the dam of Knight's Stormer H806 was covered. It is possible that Winter's Stormer S1329 was also known as Gooch's Stormer.
The Ipswich Journal, Saturday, April 12, 1783, Number 2275, says - "Stormer, Covers this Season at Brundish-Hall near Framlingham in Suffolk, at One Guinea each mare, and One Shilling the servant. The money to be paid at the time of covering, or before the mares are taken away. As there never was a fairer prospect, than the present, of selling fine strong horses for greater prices, there is sufficient inducement for every one, fond of breeding that fine animal, to which for a stallion of power and beauty, for the introduction of a race of strong, active hunters, or road horses. This stallion is recommended to the public as one likely to answer the purpose, and must be deemed a great acquisition to the county, being so formed for beauty and strength, that the most discerning sportsman would be satisfied, and in his activity he must be captivated; his walk, trot, and gallop, are in a very superlative degree, superior to the generality of his species; in leaping, his power and temper must give satisfaction, being as cool and safe a hunter as any in the kingdom, and is master of 18 stone; he hath been hunted for the three last seasons, is rising eight years old, perfectly sound, is of a rich bay colour, 15 hands 3 inches high, and is a well-bred hunter. As this is the first season of his covering, he will, for the inspection of the curious, appear once at the following markets: Stradbrook, Halesworth, Harleston, Bungay, Diss, Ipswich, Woodbridge, and Saxmundham; and after that will remain at home during the season. N B Good grass for mares at 3 s per week, with foals 3 s 6 d".
Stormer by Goldfinder was foaled in 1774. He raced in the name of the Duke of Grafton from 1777 to 1779 and once for Mr Dymock in April, 1780. He was hunted in 1780, 1781 and 1782, and his first season at stud was in 1783. The claim that he was "rising eight years old" in the above advertisement is an error as he would already have been eight years old in April 1783. This error probably occurred because the advertisement was written before Lady Day, March 25, the first day of the year. He was last advertised in April 1785 and would appear to have died in 1786.
The Ipswich Journal, Saturday, April 14, 1787, Number 2471, says - "Hero Is recommended to the Public, as a proper Substitute for Stormer; the Death of which Horse, gave such general Concern to the Breeders of this County".
The Ipswich Journal, Saturday, May 9, 1789, Number 3068, says - "Gooch’s Thunderbolt, Choice bred Son of Stormer, will cover Mares this Season, at Brundish-hall, at One Guinea each mare. Good grass at 2 s 6 d per week. The only Thing which induceth his Owner to permit him to cover at so early an age as Three Years old, is to prevent a spurious offspring of horses being bred in a county (in which he hath taken great pains to improve the stock) by such a set of animals which attend every market, without the essential requisites to introduce substantial hunters and road horses. Thunderbolt is of a bay colour, 15 hands 3 inches in heighth, with bone sufficient to carry the greatest weights; and hath the activity of a poney. He is descended from a mare of Mr Balls, of Diss, whose character in the field and on the road, as well as her dams, is surpassing the generality of hunters. N B None but well shaped mares, will, on any consideration, be leaped".
The Ipswich Journal, Saturday, April 21, 1792, Number 3121, says - "Thunderbolt Will not attend any Market whatever, as it is injurious to the breeder, as well as owner of the horse; mares are less certain of breeding when a horse is hawked about from market to market, and the prostitution they are apt to suffer from knavish grooms, makes their produce less worthy, being generally dwindling and insignificant. Stormer, his sire, was killed by his drunken keeper, and the mares he covered were not so prolific as they would have been had Stormer remained at home. It being less expensive keeping a horse at home, (as a spur to the owners of mares) that advantage shall be given to the breeder, and the deduction in the price of covering will amply compensate for the trouble of sending their mares to Brundish-hall, near Framlingham, in Suffolk, where he will leap at Half a Guinea and Half a Crown; and half crowned must they be, who seize not this favourable opportunity of breeding by the powerful and perfect Thunderbolt. Good grass and keeping as usual".
The Ipswich Journal, Saturday, March 16, 1793, Number 3169, says - "Thunderbolt, That well-bred Son of the noted Stormer, late the property of James Wyard Gooch, of Brundish, Esq is now to be Sold, and if not Let for covering the ensuing season, the present owner not having opportunity to attend with him. He is a beautiful bright bay, rising 6 years old, 15 hands 3 inches high, full of bone, and free from blemishes. The stock he has got is the best recommendation, being allowed by all judges the most capital in the county, and fit for either road or field. His dam was an excellent hunter; he is quite gentle, and his paces remarkably good. For price and further particulars apply to Mr John Knight, Saxmundham; or Mr Nathaniel Pallent, Snape".
The Ipswich Journal, Saturday, May 3, 1800, Number 3513, says - "Stormer Will Cover This Season, At Beccles, Suffolk, At One Guinea each Mare, And Half a Crown the Groom. The Money to be paid at time of Covering. He is 6 Years Old, 15 hands 3 inches high, rode up last season, carrying 13 stone; to the tail of the Beccles and Frestone’s hounds.—He was got by a son of Stormer’s, the property of Mr Gooch, of Brundish, well known on the turf: his dam a well known blood mare in the neighbourhood of Beccles, bred by James Sewell, Esq of St[ut]ton, near Ipswich; the dam of the horse’s sire by Dodson’s Fortitude; grand dam by the Duke of Grafton’s Antinous; Great grand dam by Maskell’s Old Bumper. Will be at Bungay on Thursdays; during the season; and at home the rest of the week. Good grass for mares (with care) at Three Shillings per week. mares not stinted, half price next season".
This Stormer, foaled in 1794, was by another son of Stormer, who is here confirmed as "the property of Mr Gooch, of Brundish" and "well known on the turf".
The entry for Wright's Farmers' Glory S1396 in the Suffolk Stud Book, volume 1, page 390, says he was foaled about 1796 and was known as the Attleborough Farmers' Glory. It also says he was a full size horse, and from the description of those who knew him was probably a half-bred Suffolk. This was probably Farmer's Glory Y736 C393, own brother to West's Useful Y893+894 C332. West's Useful Y893+894 C332 was probably Jenkinson's Useful Cub who was described as by a black cart horse, resembling the Suffolk breed, out of a chapman's mare.

The majority of Jutland Horses trace back in the male line to the Suffolk Horse Oppenheim LXII, and they are all descended from the Norfolk Trotter and the Yorkshire Coach Horse through Bay Beckingham and Herdsman. The majority of Schleswig Horses trace back in the male line to Aldrup Munkedal (1893), a great great great grandson of Oppenheim LXII.

The majority of French Trotters trace back in the male line to a little-known stallion called Young Rattler, a direct descendant of the Godolphin Arabian.
He is registered in the Stud Book Trotteur Francais, volume 1, page 63, as :
"Y. Rattler (1/2 s. anglais) b. 1811. Rattler (p.s.) et N. par Snap (p.s.)".
His sire is registered in the Stud Book Trotteur Francais, volume 1, page 47, as :
"Rattler (p.s.) b. vers 1800. Old Rattler et Snap mare".
Les Courses en France by Charles du Hays (1863), page 72, says :
"Y.Rattler, anglais, 1811, importé 1820, par Rattler (fils de Rattler et d'un Snap mare), et une fille de Snap non tracé".
Handbok for Hastvanner, by C G Wrangel (Revised edition 1911-13), volume 1, page 96, says Young Rattler was "a Norfolk horse", "bred in England" and "his dam and grandam were by the same Thoroughbred sire Snap".
Available evidence suggests that Snap 1750 by Snip was the sire of the dam of Rattler. As this Snap died in 1777 and a mare from his last crop in 1778 would have been 33 years old when Young Rattler was born, it seems more likely that the dam and grandam of Young Rattler were by different stallions called Snap.
Dictionnaire de la Race Pure, by Charles du Hays (1865), says of Young Rattler :
page 150 - "Rattler v. 1810, par Old Rattler et Snap mare, inconnue".
page 424 - 'Snap mare v. 1808 [dam of Rattler], par Snap 1802 et inconnue".
page 171 - 'Snap 1802, par Delpini et Garrick mare is. Monimia".
According to Great Horses by Maurizio Bongianni, 1983, page 222, Young Rattler was by Rattler by Old Rattler by Magnum Bonum by Matchem by Cade by Godolphin Arabian.
The sire of Young Rattler, according to E J C Blackwood, was Mr Hamilton's Rattler, who was sent to Dublin. He was a bay foaled in 1795 by Rattler out of a mare by Snap out of Phoenix by Match'em. The produce of the Snap mare in the GSB, volume 1, 5th edition, page 191, shows no foal for 1795, however, Mr Hamilton bred all her foals from 1789 to 1797, and raced horses in Ireland.
The Hereford Journal, Wednesday, March 31, 1813, Number 2141, says - "To Cover This Season, 1813, at Dormington Court, near Hereford, at One Guinea and a Half each Mare, Groom's Fee included, the Money to be paid on or before Midsummer, Young Rattler. - He is a beautiful Bay colour, with Black Legs, rising Three Years old, Fifteen Hands and a Half high, perfectly temperate, and free from all kind of blemish. - His sire was Rattler, a Horse well known in this and adjoining counties ; grandsire, Old Rattler, the property of Lord Foley ; great grandsire, Imperator, out of a Herod Mare ; (her dam, Darina, by Old Marsk) ; great-great Grandsire, Conductor, Match'em, &c. &c. Young Rattler was out of a capital Hunter selected for the purpose of breeding a Stallion for this county, possessing great power, with good form and action. -He will attend at the Hay and Hereford every week, and at home on Sundays and Mondays".
The Hereford Journal, Wednesday, March 23, 1814, Number 2192, says - "To Cover This Season, 1814, at Dormington Court, near Hereford, Young Rattler, at Two Guineas each Mare, and Half-a-Crown the Groom (the Money to be paid at or before Midsummer). - He is a beautiful bay colour with black legs, rising four years old, upwards of fifteen hands and three inches high, equal to carry eighteen stone, perfectly temperate and just in his paces, is a capital Hunter, and free from blemish. His sire was Rattler, a horse well known in this and adjoining Counties, grandsire Old Rattler, the property of Lord Foley ; great grandsire, Imperator, out of a Herod Mare, her dam, Carina, by Old Marsk ; great great grandsire Conductor, Match'em, &c. &c. Young Rattler was out of a capital Hunter and Roadster, selected for the purpose of breeding a Stallion for this country, possessing great power, with fine action, and good form. - She may be seen by applying to the Proprietor of Young Rattler, at Dormington, as she is now purchased for the express purpose of breeding another Stallion. Young Rattler may be seen at the Black Swan, Hereford, every week ; at the George Inn, Ledbury ; King's Arms, Bromyard ; Oak, Leominster ; and Bear, Hay, every other week ; and at home every Sunday Morning. He was allowed last year Eighty Mares, only Seven of which are ascertained not to be in Foal. He will this year be allowed a Hundred, and it is recommended to those who wish to breed from him, to allow their names to be put down, as that number will certainly not be exceeded. N. B. Proper keep for Mares at 5s. per week. - Mares with Foal, 6s. per week, and every care taken of them. Mares not proving in Foal this Season, will be Covered next year at Half Price".

A full brother to Candelaria by Innocent's [Young] Catton is registered in the Hackney Stud Book, volume 1, page 209, as Jackson's Perfection H541. A footnote to the entry, page 210, says - "Catton (Innocent's), bred by J. Innocent, foaled 1848, dark bay, was sired by Bay Beckingham; dam by Lord Scarborough's Catton; g dam by Pretender (Wroot's) 596". Bay Beckingham is not registered in the Hackney Stud Book or the General Stud Book.
A stud card for 1892 for the Welsh trotting stallion Phenomenon III, reproduced on page 274 of Welsh Ponies and Cobs, by Wynne Davies, gives a very complete record of his breeding, the end part of which reads - "G. grandsire, that very celebrated Norfolk Horse, Young Perfection [Jackson's Perfection H541], winner of the Royal in 1865. G. g. grandsire Young Catton [Innocent's Catton], winner of the Royal at Lincoln. Catton by Bay Beckingham, by Grand Conqueror, by King George, which was sold to the Emperor of Russia for £370".
Grand Conqueror is registered in the Yorkshire Coach Horse Stud Book, volume 1, page 55, as Grand Conqueror Y204, foaled in 1834, by King George. King George is registered in the Yorkshire Coach Horse Stud Book, volume 1, page 66, as King George Y240, and in the Cleveland Bay Stud Book, volume 1, page 53, as King George C160. Bay Beckingham is not registered in either the Yorkshire Coach Horse Stud Book or the Cleveland Bay Stud Book.
A stallion called Bay Beckingham was sent to Denmark to cover Jutland mares. He is described in the Stambog over heste af Jydsk Race, the Jutland Stud Book, as - "Bay, foaled 1843 in England", "English Yorkshire stallion, imported 1846" and "Pedigree unknown, mostly Cleveland Bay". The stud book lists where he was every year from 1847 to 1858 but makes no mention of 1846, the year he was said to have been imported. It would seem from the evidence that Bay Beckingham by Grand Conqueror was sent to Denmark in 1847 some time after covering the dam of Innocent's [Young] Catton.
The Yorkshire Gazette, Saturday, August 8, 1846, Number 1412, The Award of Premiums at the Yorkshire Agricultural Show, says - "Class 27. - For the best Cleveland bred Stallion, £10, to Mr. Henry Watson, of Walkeringham, Bawtry, for his bay horse, Bay Beckingham, f. June 1st, 1843, s. Grand Conqueror, d. by Barnaby".
The Leeds Intelligencer, Saturday, August 8, 1846, Number 4816, says - "For the best Cleveland bred Stallion, £10 - Bay Beckingham, (bay,) f. June, 1st, 1843, - S. Grand Conqueror, D. by Barnaby. - Henry Watson, Walkeringham, Bawtry ; bred by him".
The following entry appears in the Yorkshire Coach Horse Stud Book, Volume 1, page 154:
"Bawtry 553. Foaled 1843. Bred by and property of Henry Watson, Walkeringham, Bawtry. Sire Grand Conqueror 204. Dam by Barnaby 552".
This evidence clearly shows that Bay Beckingham was registered as Bawtry 553.

According to The Family Tables of Racehorses by K Bobinski, volume 1, the sire of Electrique was Young Emilius, 1833, by Emilius out of Shoveler, however there is no evidence that this Young Emilius ever stood in France. In Le Stud-Book de la Race Pure, by Commandant Cousté, published in 1898, which lists the Thoroughbred sires in France, Electrique is listed as one of the sons of Young Emilius, 1828, by Emilius out of Cobweb.

Some French Trotters trace back in the male line to Rysdyk's Hambletonian through The Great McKinney and Sam Williams. The stallions Quiproquo II (1938) and Quiroga II (1938), both fraudulently registered as by Gael (1928) by Intermede (1908) by Bemecourt (1901) by Fuschia, were in fact by Calumet Delco. As there are no officially registered foals by Calumet Delco in the Stud Book du Trotteur Francais his line doesn't officially exist, however its existence is commonly accepted in France where the leading trotting magazine, Trot Information, refers to this line as "Lignee Calumet Delco".

All Orlov Trotters trace back in the male line to the Arabian stallion Smetanka.
The three breeds of trotter in Russia are the Orlov Trotter, the Standardbred Trotter and the Russian Trotter. Any horse not Orlov or Standardbred is by definition a Russian Trotter. An Orlov Trotter may carry the blood of other breeds up to a maximum of 12.5%, so it is therefore possible for an Orlov Trotter to trace back in the male line to a stallion other than Smetanka. All Russian Trotters carry less than 87.5% Orlov blood and most trace back in the male line to Rysdyk's Hambletonian. Russian Trotters that descend from Smetanka include Burlak (1901), Koldun (1929) and Talantlivyi (1932). The Orlov Trotter Pilot (1932) was by the Russian Trotter Giatsint (1925) by the Russian Trotter Burlak (1901) by the Orlov Trotter Bystrolet (1893).
Registration numbers, which were introduced at the start of the twentieth century, are used to identify the breeds. Orlov Trotters have numbers beginning 1 through 9 while Standardbred Trotters and Russian Trotters have numbers beginning 0.

All Morgan Horses trace back in the male line to Justin Morgan (1789).
The foundation sires of the American Saddle Horse are Denmark (1839) and Harrison Chief (1872). Crigler's Denmark (1872), who was originally registered as by Washington Denmark by Gaine's Denmark, is now accepted as being by Lail's Denmark Chief by Gaine's Denmark.

The majority of Missouri Fox Trotters trace back in the male line to the Tennessee Walking Horse Roan Allen (1904) by the Standardbred Black Allan (1886), while some descend from the American Saddle Horse. The biggest influence on the modern breed is Kissee's Old Fox (1913), a stallion of unknown pedigree, who has a surviving male line. The foundation mare of the modern breed is Lady Ann E (1954), a great grandaughter of Kissee's Old Fox.

The Thoroughbred Odin (1830), through Veikle-Balder (1848), is the foundation sire of the Coldblood Trotter, the Dole-Gudbrandsdal and the North Swedish Draft. The majority of Coldblood Trotters trace back in the male line to Kaare (1898), who is officially by Dalegudbrand (1891) by Doelegubben (1874) by Sterkoder (1870) by Toftebrun (1865) by Gamle Toftehingst (1856). There is evidence which suggests that when the dam of Kaare, Toftebruna (1887) by Toftebrun, was sent to be covered by Dalegudbrand in 1897, she escaped and was later found together with Galde (1887). Old photographs show that Kaare was very different from other sons of the heavy Dalegudbrand and it is most likely that he is a son of Galde and traces back in the male line to the Thoroughbred Odin. That Dalegudbrand was a large heavy horse is confirmed in an old letter which states that his sire was not Doelegubben but a three year old son (1887) of the Ardennais stallion Bayard, of unknown pedigree. The line of Gamle Toftehingst survives through the descendants of Valde (1923).

The four stallions which had the greatest influence on the Welsh Cob during the period 1830 to 1880 were True Briton H839 (1830), Evan's Trotting Comet H834 (1836), Cymro Llwyd and Alonzo the Brave H22 (1866). The stallion which had the greatest influence on both the Hackney Pony and the Welsh Pony was Wilson's Sir George H778 (1866). The established Welsh Pony and Cob sire lines descend from Hamlet Prince of Denmark H4804 (1892), Julius Caesar II H5666 (1894), Glory Farmer, who may or may not be related to Farmer's Glory Y736 C393 S1396, and Charley, the great grandsire of Dyoll Starlight. The majority of Dartmoor Ponies trace back in the male line to Jude (1941).

There used to be no distinction between the Dales Pony and the Fell Pony other than the Dales was from the east of the Pennines and the Fell was from the west. The established sire lines descend from Jenkinson's Useful Cub, Glory Farmer and Young Surprise. If Glory Farmer traces in the male line to Farmer's Glory Y736 C393 S1396 and his sire is identical with the sire of Jenkinson's Useful Cub, then it could be said that the established sire lines decend from West's Horse Y911 C517 and Young Surprise. Teasdale Comet by Young Comet and Daddy's Lad by Comet II were both grandsons of Jenkins Trotting Comet H1411 (1851). It is possible that Young Comet and Comet II were the same horse. The grey Park End King was by Comet. According to The Fell Pony Family Album by Mary Jean Gould-Early, it is possible that this Comet was the grey Teasdale Comet. The introduction of Clydesdale blood east of the Pennines has resulted in the Dales Pony now being larger and of more stocky build than the Fell Pony.

All Highland Ponies trace back in the male line to Yankee, a brown stallion, said to be brought from America in a sailing ship. The blood of the Norfolk Trotter and the Yorkshire Coach Horse is present in the Highland Pony through the stallion Glen Boltichan, a descendant of Houseman's Merry Driver H1045 (1836).
