Nettle | ||
A modern branch of Family 1 descends from a mare now known as Nettle. Until 1891, she was un-named in GSB and neither she, nor her dam (a Regulus mare) had broodmare entries.

||
For the 1891 edition of Volume 1 of GSB, it appears that the editor(s) relied heavily on Pick's entry in his Turf Register (i, 1803; p 442-443) when formulating the entries for NETTLE & her dam REGULUS MARE.

According to Pick, Nettle
was a grey mare, foaled in 1763, bred by John St Leger Douglas, Esq;
sold to Lord Viscount Bolingbroke, and afterwards to Mr Freeth. Pick
gives her pedigree as got by Bajazet, her dam (Goldfinder's grandam) by
Regulus; grandam by Lord Lonsdale's Bay Arabian, out of Bonnylass, the
dam of Merry Andrew. He describes her racing career beginning with a win
at Odsey in September 1766. After being sold to Mr Freeth, she won twice
more in 1767, twice in 1768, and once in 1769. She then became a
broodmare in Lord Bolingbroke's Stud & was the dam of Nettletop (dam of
Fortunio & Cormorant) as well as Indiana (dam of several foals for Lord
G H Cavendish). However, comparison against contemporary records indicates that 3 different mares have been combined in Pick's entry, which was then perpetuated in GSB. Lord Bolingbroke's Nettle Lord Bolingbroke's bl f won £50 at Odsey in September 1766. She was probably the same as his black filly Nettle which ran 3 of 15 for £50 for 3 yo at Newmarket in October. In April 1767, Ld Bolingbroke's br f Nettle, by Bajazet ran 2 of 4 for a Sweepstakes of 100gs each at Newmarket; her pedigree was given in Heber's 1766 (Races to Come) as got by Bajazet, her dam by Crab. Mr Freeth's Nettle Mr Freeth's gr f Nettle first raced in 1767, as a 4 yo; she was frequently identified as a daughter of Bajazet, and consistently described as grey. Her racing career did not end in 1769, as given in Pick; she started 3 times in 1770 and once more in July 1771. It seems extremely unlikely that she was dam of Nettletop in 1770 and Bacchus in 1771. Further, Mr Freeth did start Young Nettle, a 4 yo black filly, in 1776, suggesting that he bred at least one foal after the retirement of his Nettle from the turf in 1771. Mr St Leger Douglas's Bajazet mare According to Heber 1764 (Races to Come) Mr St Leger Douglas's b f by Bajazet, out of a Regulus mare was engaged to run a match in 1765 against Mr Compton's b f. Mr Douglas paid forfeit. Mr Douglas's Bajazet mare was mentioned one more time in Weatherby's Racing Calendar (newspaper) for 1 Jul 1778 (issue VI). The entries for a Sweepstakes of 100gs each, to be run at Lewes, 30 Jul 1778, included Ld Bolingbroke's f by Snap, out of Mr Douglas's Bajazet mare; several of the other entries are identifiable as foals of 1775, so Ld Bolingbroke's entry was probably Indiana. It is not known if Mr Douglas's Bajazet mare was called Nettle, but the above entry, as well as her pedigree is consistent with her having been the dam of GSB's HEROD MARE, INDIANA, and NETTLETOP. Mr St Leger Douglas's Blank mare (dam of Goldfinder) In Heber 1766 (Races to Come) Goldfinder was first mentioned as "Mr J Shafto's c got by Snap, out of Mr Douglass's Mare;" and in 1767 (Races to Come) as "Goldfinder, got by Snap, out of a Mare of Mr Douglass's." Stallion ads for Goldfinder identified his dam as by Blank; Regulus; Ld Lonsdale's bay Arabian; Bay Bolton; Darley's Arabian; Byerly Turk; Tafolet Barb; Place's White Turk - a natural Barb mare. Pick's Pedigree and Performances… of about 1785 identified the breeder of Goldfinder as John St Leger Douglas, Esq; of Spring-Fields, Essex. Possibly Mr Douglas's b f by Blank which lost a Match to Ld Chedworth's ch f in 1762, was Goldfinder's dam. Regulus mare No definite information has been discovered to date about this mare. The pedigrees of her descendants in GSB indicate her dam was a mare by the Lonsdale Arabian (sometimes Lonsdale Bay Arabian) and that her grandam was by Bay Bolton (sometimes identified as Bonny Lass). Contemporary records provide limited candidates. In Heber 1764, Ld Bolingbroke's c Prodigee, by Bajazet, dam by Regulus was noted as entered in a Sweepstakes of 300gs each at Newmarket, Easter Week, 1765; however, he did not start, and no other information has been found. According to later pedigrees, the dam of Caliban (1763 br c by Brilliant: raced 1767-1770; advertised as a stallion in 1771) was by Regulus, her dam by Ld Lonsdale's Arabian; Bay Bolton; Darley's Arabian; Byerley Turk; Taffolet Barb; Place's White Arabian - a Barb mare. According to this same advertisement, Caliban was bred by William Wildman, and Mr Pick (Turf Register, i, 1803, p 442) wrote that Mr Wildman sold this colt to Mr Robert Shafto. In 1764, Mr Shafto listed as one of his possible entries for the 1400gs Sweepstakes for 4 yo to be run at Newmarket in October 1766 a c by Brilliant, bought of Sir J Ramsden. Given Caliban's pedigree, it is possible that Mr Shafto's 1762 colt was a brother to Mr R Shafto's Caliban, and that the dam had been sold to Mr Wildman before Caliban was foaled. There is a sales advertisement for part of the the Stud of Sir John Ramsden, Bart from June 1762 (York Courant, No. 1909), although this particular Lonsdale Arabian mare is not listed. Jacko was advertised as a stallion in 1773 & 1774; his pedigree was certified by his breeder, Ld Rockingham, and his grandam was given as a mare by Regulus; Ld Lonsdale's Grey Arabian; Bay Bolton; Darley's Arabian; Byerley Turk; Taffolet Barb; Place's White Arabian - a natural Barb Mare. Ld Rockingham is known to have purchased in Dec 1751, a 3 year old gr f called Mary Grey from Sir John Ramsden (Ld Rockingham's account book "Expences of the Studd", WWM/R194; Sheffield Archives). Her pedigree was provided in a certificate from Sir John (WWM/R193/64; Sheffield Archives) as got by Regulus; her dam by Ld Lonsdale's Grey Arabian bought of Sir Thos Winn; Bay Bolton; Darley's Arabian; Bierley Turk; Taffolet Barb; Mr Place's White Arabian - a Barbary Mare. However, although Mary Grey's produce record is probably incomplete, she had foals for Ld Rockingham from 1754 until about 1770; they were got by old Traveller, Ld Rockingham's Godolphin Colt, his broken legged Cade colt (probably Emilius) and Sampson. And there is no record of Ld Rockingham having patronized Bajazet. Given these two factors, it seems unlikely that she was dam of Mr Douglas's Bajazet mare. Sir John Ramsden is known to have bred mares to both Regulus and Bajazet (he bred Ld March's, later Ld Grafton's Bay Bajazet). He is also known to have had at least two mares by the Lonsdale Bay Arabian, and at least one by the Lonsdale Grey Arabian, out of a sister to Whitefoot and Bonny Lass. And although it is possible that Mr Douglas acquired his Regulus mare directly from Sir John, it cannot be said with certainty which Lonsdale Arabian mare was her dam. Sister to Whitefoot This mare is called sister to Bonny Lass in GSB, but contemporary records called her a sister to Whitefoot, that horse being then more well-known than Bonny Lass. This mare is well-documented as having produced at least 3 foals to the Lonsdale Bay Arabian, as well as the dam of Mary Grey, by the Lonsdale Grey Arabian, noted above. She is mentioned in a certificate in Ld Rockingham's collection (WWM/R193/7; Sheffield Archives) Fair-Star and Sophy A Bay Mare, called Fare-Star, sold to the Marquiss of Rockingham. -- 1751 -- She was got by Lord Lonsdale's Bay Arabian; her Dam by Bay Bolton; her Grand Dam by the Darley Arabian; her great Grand Dam by the Byerley Turk; her great great Grand Dam by the Taffalet Barb; her great great great Grand Dam by Place's white Arabian, out of a natural Barb Mare. This Mare is covered this year by old Starling. A Bay Filley with white Feet & a Blaze sold at the same time. She was got by Cade, and out of a full Sister to the above mare. She is now three Years old. Fare Star is now eighteen years old. / Byram Octr 23d 1751. Bonny Lass is not known to have been bred to the Lonsdale Bay Arabian by either of the breeders she produced for (the Duke of Bolton and Mr Panton); and neither is known to have patronized the Lonsdale Arabians. It, therefore, seems likely that the Bay Bolton mare in the pedigree of "Nettle" was not Bonny Lass, but was, instead, her sister. |
