| Family branch 23-b remains active only via Gallopade who proved to
be one of the most influential of the 19th century Thoroughbred
matriarchs in North America.
Hervey wrote in 1934 that "many students of American bloodlines consider
Gallopade the ranking progenitress imported during the last 100 years;
it is difficult to name another capable of contesting the palm with
her." Bred in England by Colonel King, Gallopade was imported into Canada in 1833 and arrived in the USA no later than the spring of 1835 when she was covered by Leviathan. James Jackson Sr (1782-1840) of Forks of Cypress, Alabama is her only known North American owner. He (or his estate) was the breeder of all eight of her recorded foals. Gallopade produced two fillies by Leviathan prior to Jackson’s importation of Glencoe, the recorded sire of all her subsequent produce. Several of her foals acquitted themselves commendably on the turf, most notably Reel “the Louisiana Champion”. None, however, raced for Jackson. His will left control of his bloodstock to his Kirkman nephews, with instructions for gradual dispersal, a process not completed until the 1848 sale of Glencoe. Most of Gallopade’s foals were sold as yearlings or two-year-olds. Daughters Fandango, Cotillion, Reel and Quadrille were owned by prominent turfmen of Louisiana. Sooner or later all four made their way to Kentucky studs, the paths taken there by Reel and Fandango, both owned by General T J Wells, being somewhat less circuitous than those of Cotillion and Quadrille. Only one of Quadrille’s two recorded fillies is known to have bred on and the last traces of her recorded tail female lineage are in late 19th century Texas. Of Gallopade’s fifth daughter Cracovienne no further record has been found after she finished a strong second to Ambassador in the Alabama Stake, Nashville track, Oct, 1843, running for Thomas Kirkman.
