Diana was probably foaled about 1754. Unnamed in her native record,
she was recorded as "Diana"
in the March 24, 1798 Augusta [Georgia, USA] Chronicle,
in her capacity as dam of Fitzhugh's True Whig and Spotswood's Apollo.
Imported in 1763 by Bernard Moore (1720-1772), breeder of Apollo and uncle
of Gen. Alexander Spotswood (1746-1818) who most likely acquired Apollo after
his uncle's death. In 1774 Diana was owned by William Fitzhugh (1741-1800)
who also owned her daughter Diana 2d. Diana had four very well-documented foals, including two fillies that are long extinct in tail female. Largely on the basis of 19th century American tradition, and usually represented as the same mare, the earliest identified dam(s) in the pedigrees of 19th century conduits Lady Grey (USA 1817 by Robin Grey), and Maid of the Oaks (USA 1801 by imported Spread Eagle), has been unofficially appended to Diana's American produce in the modern era.. However, mtDNA typing to date does not support matrilineal connection of Lady Grey and Maid of the Oaks to Diana, or to each other. .
