Blue Cap The General Stud Book notes that if Blue Cap, sire of the Blue Cap Mare, was the same horse as Penruddock's Blue Cap then he was sired by Old Greyhound [GSB 1:88]. However, this seems unlikely as Mr Penruddock's Blue Cap placed 2nd in the King's Plate at Salisbury in 1729, won by Sir William Strickland's Batt (b c 1723 Strickland Turk). This would indicate that his year of birth was also around 1723 and does not allow enough time for his great-grandson Bolton Goliah to arrive in 1730. Both the Turf Register and the Racing Calendar record the horse in question as Sir Matthew Pierson's Blue Cap [Pick 1:41 & Cheny 1744:xxviii]. An earlier Blew Cap belonging to King Charles II ran at Newmarket in 1674 and 1675. Duchess "DUCHESS, sometimes DUCHESS DOWAGER (Sir E O'Brien's), bred in 1757 a b c Dorimond, by Bustard (son of Crab)" [GSB 1:88]. Duchess was sent to Ireland. |
